Broadtail, the pelt of the newborn or unborn Karakul lamb, has flat, wavy hair. Other lamb furs are curly, except for mouton, where the fur has been sheared to look like beaver. Mink Most mink is ranch-raised, with the largest numbers produced in Russia and Scandinavia. Mink has both dense ground hair and long, glossy guard hair. Many colors have been developed from mutant mink. Nutria (coypu) Ranch-raised in North America, taken wild in South America. Guard hairs are plucked, and the commercial fur consists of the thick, short ground hair. Opossum Taken wild in North and South America. The coarse fur is light brown or gray. Rabbit (coney, lapin) Taken wild throughout the world although some are ranch-raised. The guard hairs are usually plucked, and the fur dyed. Raccoon Taken wild in North and South America. Gray or black fur with long guard hairs. Sable Taken wild in Siberia. Among the most valued of furs, with long lustrous guard hair, thick ground hair. Very dark brown or brownish black. Seal, fur Taken wild in Alaska, Siberia, South America, South Africa, and Japan. Coarse guard hairs are plucked, dense ground hair is often dyed. Squirrel Taken wild in Siberia. Long, glossy guard hair, long, dense ground hair. Pelts are often dyed. *Mutant.
