Phraseology is a game of knowledge and logic based on elements of the familiar games Hangman and Wheel of Fortune. When the game starts, a phrase (song title, movie title, TV show title, or best selling book title) is displayed as a series of bullets. Guesses for individual letters are made using the keyboard, and as a letter is used it is removed from the keyboard. If the letter occurs anywhere in the phrase, it is displayed. The game continues until one of the following occurs:
- All letters are uncovered displaying the full phrase (Winning Game)
- Time runs out (Losing Game)
- Too many bad guesses are made (Losing Game)
All numbers, punctuation and non-standard characters are automatically displayed. There are two progress bars underneath the phrase: the top one shows the number of bad guesses allowed and made; the bottom one shows the time remaining in the game. The score is shown in the upper left corner, and can be reset by clicking on it.
The included data file contains 300 movie titles, 350 song titles, 55 TV show titles, and 150 best selling fiction and non-fiction books. Additional data files can be downloaded at http://www.ceng.com/Phraseology/description.asp. New data files can simply be copied to the PocketPC, overwriting the original data file. The data file must be placed in the same location as the Phraseology program. By using the category drop-down box in the upper right corner, a specific category can be selected.
The current phrase's category is displayed in the Space bar on the keyboard. If the space bar is clicked (or Hint is selected on the Tools menu), a hint will be displayed in a dialog box. If the Enter key is pressed,(or Pause is selected on the Tools menu), the game is paused and hidden and a notepad edit box with the standard keyboard is displayed. Selecting Resume on the Tools menu will redisplay and resume the game.
The game has two display modes available in the Tools menu.
- Game Display - A graphical display that shows the time remaining as a rising water level, and the number of correct guesses as a bridge being built. A red jeep drives up the hill and will be stranded at the top if the bridge is not built before the water rises to the top.
- Note Display - This display allows the game to be played in 'stealth' mode. Anyone looking at the screen in this mode would not think that a game was being played, making it perfect for those long meetings. The top half of the screen is a fully functioning notepad that can be edited using any of the PocketPC data input methods when the game is paused. The window also supports 'Tap & Hold' for the standard edit commands. Whatever is on this note is automatically saved in a file called Note.txt when the program quits, and will be automatically be reloaded the next time the program is started.
The Preferences selection on the Tools menu allows the rules governing the game to be changed. Based on the size of the phrase, the timeout and number of bad guesses allowed can be set for four different levels.
Phraseology is shareware, and the demo is limited to 12 phrases. To receive a registration code, purchase Phraseology at http://www.pocketgear.com. The registration code is keyed to the owner name in the PocketPC device, and if this is changed a new code will be required. Send an email to support@ceng.com for more information.
Installation:

Run the program Phraseology103.exe to install the application on your PocketPC. It will also place a Phraseology shortcut in the Games folder. To uninstall, use the 'Add/Remove Programs' option on the Tools menu in the Microsoft ActiveSync program.
Help is available from within the program by selected Help on the Tools menu.
Installation Files:

All files are installed by default in the \Program Files\Phraseology folder, but can be moved or installed elsewhere. All files must be in the same directory.
Phraseology.exe - This is the application file.
Note.txt - This file contains the text from the note file used in 'stealth mode'.
Data.dat - This is the data file containing all the phrases in an encrypted format. Additional data files can be downloaded at http://www.ceng.com/Phraseology/description.asp. New data files can simply be copied to the PocketPC, overwriting the original data file. They must be renamed to Data.dat.
Phraseology.ink - This is a shortcut to the application and is installed in the\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Games folder.
