  8. WinZip 8.1 continues to improve integration with Windows
  9. Explorer via expanded, configurable Explorer context menu
  10. items--and you can now select multiple Zip files for extraction
  11. in a single operation from the Explorer window.  For those who
  12. have problems with limited size of e-mail attachments, or who
  13. want to split up large downloadable Zip files, the new split Zip
  14. file feature allows you to split Zip files into multiple parts
  15. of a size that you specify. And WinZip Quick Pick, the new
  16. taskbar tray icon gives you instant access to recently opened
  17. Zip files and other WinZip features. And Windows XP users will
  18. appreciate WinZip 8.1's support of new XP features.

  20. Details on these and many other enhancements follow.

  22. Enhanced Explorer Integration
  23.  
  24. -  You can now select multiple Zip files in an Explorer window
  25.    and extract from all of them in one operation.
  26.  
  27. -  You can now choose which items WinZip should add to Explorer's
  28.    context menu for Zip files and other archives.  This feature
  29.    can be accessed directly from the Explorer context menu if
  30.    WinZip is configured to display its context menu items as a
  31.    submenu; otherwise, it is available from the Explorer
  32.    Enhancements tab of WinZip's Configuration dialog.  (For a
  33.    complete list of WinZip's context menu entries, see Explorer
  34.    context menu enhancements.)

  36. -  There is a new Explorer context menu entry that allows you to
  37.    print a list of files in a Zip file.  Note that, because Print
  38.    is part of the standard Windows interface, it appears in the
  39.    main context menu (not in the WinZip submenu) and has no
  40.    WinZip icon.

  42. -  You can now extract directly to recently used folders or to
  43.    the open folder from the Explorer context menu.  This means
  44.    that, in combination with the existing extract options, you
  45.    can perform most of the commonly used extract operations
  46.    without leaving Explorer.

  48. -  The new Zip and E-Mail Plus context menu entry extends the Zip
  49.    and E-Mail feature by allowing you to change the name of the
  50.    attachment and to use password protection.

  52. Split Zip Files
  53.  
  54. -  WinZip now supports split Zip files, which are Zip files that
  55.    have been split into multiple smaller pieces.  This feature is
  56.    very useful to overcome limits on the size of e-mail
  57.    attachments and as an alternative to disk spanning.

  59. WinZip Quick Pick Taskbar Tray Icon
  60.  
  61. -  The new WinZip Quick Pick taskbar tray icon gives you instant
  62.    access to WinZip and your Zip files.  Just left click the icon
  63.    to open WinZip or right click it to instantly reopen recently
  64.    used Zip files, access your Favorite Zip Folders, open WinZip
  65.    help, or start WinZip itself.

  67. WinZip Classic Interface Enhancements
  68.  
  69. -  The Extract dialog now has an option to open the folder where
  70.    the files were stored when the extract operation is completed.
  71.  
  72. -  Right clicking on a column header in the main WinZip window
  73.    now displays a menu that allows you to change the columns that
  74.    are displayed.
  75.  
  76. -  Under Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows XP, and Windows 2000,
  77.    many dialogs that were previously fixed size can now be
  78.    resized.
  79.  
  80. -  If the open archive is a Zip file, the Properties dialog
  81.    contains a new Details button that displays extensive
  82.    information about the Zip file and the files it contains.

  84. -  The Open dialog contains a new Favorites button that gives you
  85.    quick access to the files in your Favorite Zip Folders.

  87. WinZip Wizard Enhancements
  88.  
  89. -  If the open Zip file contains a setup or install program, the
  90.    Wizard now allows you to choose whether to run the
  91.    installation or to simply extract the files.
  92.  
  93. -  In the panel used to select files to be added to a Zip file,
  94.    the WinZip Wizard now displays a tooltip showing the complete
  95.    filename when the mouse is hovered over a truncated filename.
  96.  
  97. -  The Wizard can now extract files from split Zip files and
  98.    multiple disk ("spanned") Zip files.

  100. Windows XP features
  101.  
  102. -  When running under Windows XP, WinZip 8.1 operates as a native
  103.    Windows XP program.  There is no need to set compatibility
  104.    mode.

  106. -  WinZip includes the following support for Windows XP themes:
  107.  
  108.    -  Menus, buttons, controls, lists, and checklists conform to
  109.       the current theme.
  110.  
  111.    -  Shaded columns and XP-style sort arrows indicate the column
  112.       by which the file list is sorted and the sort order.
  113.  
  114.    -  Resizable dialogs use grippers matching the current theme.
  115.  
  116.    -  Both the WinZip program itself and self-extracting Zip files
  117.       created by WinZip Self-Extractor Personal Edition use
  118.       "highest quality" XP-style color images and background
  119.       blending for WinZip-related icons wherever they are
  120.       displayed by Windows Explorer or My Computer, as well as for
  121.       WinZip's own toolbar icons.

  123.    -  Self-extractors created by WinZip Self-Extractor Personal
  124.       Edition support XP themes when displaying dialogs and
  125.       messages.

  127. -  Shared computer support includes:

  129.    -  With Fast User Switching, another user can log on and
  130.       perform other operations (including using WinZip) while a
  131.       long WinZip operation is being performed.

  133.    -  WinZip's Favorite Folders feature now monitors more folders,
  134.       including Windows XP's "Shared Documents" folder and its
  135.       subfolders, making it easier to find Zip files created or
  136.       stored by other users.

  139. Other Changes in WinZip 8.1
  140.  
  141. -  WinZip can now open "skin" files for Microsoft Media Player
  142.    7 (.WMZ), Yahoo! Player (.YFS), and WinAmp (.WSZ). Once open,
  143.    you can use most of the operations available with any Zip
  144.    file.
  145.  
  146. -  WinZip can now display Zip file comments of up to 64,000
  147.    characters if your system provides the necessary "rich edit"
  148.    control.
  149.  
  150. -  Support for filenames containing multi-byte character set
  151.    (MBCS) characters used with Asian languages such as Japanese,
  152.    Chinese, and Korean has been improved.
  153.  
  154. -  The limit on the number of entries created by the CheckOut
  155.    feature in the Programs menu has been increased from 50 to
  156.    500.
  157.  
  158. -  WinZip removes from the list of recently used files any files
  159.    that no longer exist and were opened from the temporary or
  160.    Internet files folders.  This means that, for example, Zip
  161.    files opened from your e-mail program no longer appear in your
  162.    recently used file list after they have been deleted by the
  163.    e-mail program.
