  19. ===============

  21. This ReadMe file contains last-minute updates that didn't make it
  22. into the manual.  For the latest on potential hardware and software
  23. problems, and for bug-fixes and patches, point your browser to 
  24. http://www.noesc.com to read the latest version of this document.

  27. 3. Installation
  28. ===============

  30. Close all open windows on your desktop and quit all other 
  31. applications. Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive. (If 
  32. your CD-ROM drive has Auto insert notification enabled, 
  33. the Launcher utility will appear. If Auto insert notification 
  34. is disabled, and the game's launcher does not automatically 
  35. appear, you will need to eighter enable Auto insert 
  36. notification (see your Windows (r) documentation for more 
  37. information) or open the Launcher manually. To do this, 
  38. double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, then double-
  39. click the CD-ROM icon in the window that opens. Double-click 
  40. the launcher.exe file to open the Launcher. It will contain 
  41. the following options:

  43. -INSTALL. Installs the game on your hard drive.
  44.  
  45. -PLAY. Starts "No Escape" (if it has been installed first)
  46.  
  47. -INSTALL DIRECTX(tm) 7.0A. This option installs Microsoft(r) 
  48. DirectX(tm) 7.0A on your computer, if required. A normal 
  49. installation of the game will automatically determine wether 
  50. or not you need to perform this installation.

  52. -QUIT. Quits the Launcher and returns you to your desktop.
  53.  
  54. To install the game, click the INSTALL button, and follow the 
  55. on-screen instructions. If setup detects that you don't have 
  56. the latest required version of DirectXtm installed, you will 
  57. be prompted to install it.
  58.  
  59. The installer will now create a "No Escape" Program Folder for the 
  60. program icons. Click Next to choose the default option (Program 
  61. Files/Games/NoEscape), or  you can create a new folder or select 
  62. an existing forder, then click Next.
  63.  
  64. Next, you will be given the option to create a series of 
  65. shortcuts for your Start Menu. Creating a shortcut will make 
  66. it easier for you to start the game. Click the check boxes to 
  67. deselect any shortcuts you don't want in the Start Menu.

  69. At this point, the installation will begin copying files from 
  70. the CD-ROM to your hard drive. Depending on the speed of your 
  71. CD-ROM and the size of the installation, this may take up to 
  72. twenty minutes.

  106. 5. Troubleshooting
  107. ===================

  109. This section assumes that your computer is plugged in, that the 
  110. power is on, and that you are running one of the operating
  111. systems listed in "System Requirements". It also assumes that 
  112. your computer hardware equals or surpasses the minimum requirements 
  113. listed in "System Requirements".
  114.  
  115. The most common reason why a game doesn't work properly is due to
  116. old drivers.  Make sure you're using the latest drivers for your
  117. video- and sound-card, and that you've installed the latest version
  118. of DirectX (included with the game).
  119.  
  120.  
  121.  PROBLEM: The installation aborts during the DirectX installation, 
  122.           reporting that an internal error has occurred.
  123.    CAUSE: You don't have enough memory/swap-space available on your
  124.           computer.
  125. SOLUTION: Reinstall the game, click "No" when asked if you want to
  126.           install DirectX.  After installing the game, select 
  127.           "Install DirectX" from the Launcher.  DirectX should now
  128.           install properly.
  129.  
  130.  PROBLEM: The game does not start. A message pops us telling me that
  131.           one or more files are missing and that I need to re-install.
  132.    CAUSE: The paths pointing to the game data have not been set or
  133.           are incorrect.
  134. SOLUTION: You need to re-install the game to correct this problem.
  135.  
  136.  PROBLEM: During the installation process a message pops up, telling you that
  137.           the game doesn't necessary work with windows NT.
  138.    CAUSE: No Escape needs DirectX 7.0 or better and control over the 
  139.           sound hardware to run. This is usually not supported in windows NT.
  140. SOLUTION: Run the game on a computer with Windows 95 or Windows 98. If you think you
  141.           can make the game run on NT anyway, you are welcome to try it, but we will
  142.           not give any support on it...
  143.   SYSTEM: Any machine running on Windows NT.

  146.  PROBLEM: The game runs in a small rectangle in the upper left of your
  147.           monitor.
  148.    CAUSE: The game is not able to switch to full-screen mode in a
  149.           proper fashion.
  150. SOLUTION: Update your drivers.
  151. HARDWARE: 3Dfx Voodoo 3
  152.  
  153.  PROBLEM: 32-bit colour depth is not available from the list in the
  154.           video options.
  155.    CAUSE: Your video-card doesn't support 32-bit true color mode, or
  156.           it doesn't have enough memory to run "No Escape"
  157.           in 32-bit true color.
  158. SOLUTION: Select another video-card (if available) from the Hardware
  159.           Setup dialog, or run the game in 16-bit colour instead.
  160. HARDWARE: 3Dfx Voodoo 1, 2 and 3
  161.

  163.  PROBLEM: A message pops up when the game starts, saying you may
  164.           experience degraded sound quality.
  165.    CAUSE: The drivers for your soundcard are not DirectX certified.
  166. SOLUTION: The game may still run flawlessly, but if it doesn't,
  167.           contact your sound-card's hardware vendor and inquire about
  168.           updated drivers.
  169. HARDWARE: Very new or very old soundcards.
  170.  
  171.  
  172.  PROBLEM: The game is really choppy.
  173.    CAUSE: Your system may not fulfill all hardware requirements.
  174.           "No Escape" requires a 166-MMX Pentium to run at
  175.           all, and it prefers a much faster CPU to run optimally.
  176. SOLUTION: A 3D graphics accelerator may help performance, as will
  177.           more RAM, a faster hard-disk or CD-ROM, or a faster CPU.
  178.           Performance will also be increased if you choose a full
  179.           installation.
  180. HARDWARE: Slow systems.
  181.  
  182.  PROBLEM: The game stops with the message "Out of Memory".
  183.    CAUSE: You don't have enough space on the hard-drive where the
  184.           Windows swap-file resides.
  185. SOLUTION: Free up some space on the drive where the Windows swap-file
  186.           is located (normally the C:\ drive) and start the game again.
  187. HARDWARE: No specific hardware.

  190. 6. Not supported
  191. ================
  192.  
  193. -"No Escape" does not support 8 bits screenmodes
  194.  
  195. -"No Escape" does not support 24 bits screenmodes
  196.  
  197. -in the video options, Voodoo2 cards say that they support 1024x768. 
  198. This is not true with "No Escape". If this screenmode is set, the game 
  199. will most probably not run. To fix this, please go into the root directory 
  200. of where "No Escape" was installed (probably the same directory that this 
  201. readme file is located), open "DISPLAY.txt", edit the screensize to eighter 
  202. 640x480 or 800x600, and save. The game should now be able to start.
