  9. Thank you for playing the Star Wars Pit Droids Mega Demo. We
  10. recommend that you read this file to get up-to-date
  11. information about installing, running, and maximizing the
  12. performance of Pit Droids.

  14. For additional information and in-depth technical
  15. documentation about specific hardware, we recommend reading
  16. the Pit Droids Troubleshooting Guide.  To access the
  17. Troubleshooting Guide after installing the game, follow these
  18. steps:

  95.       in interactive technologies.  As I began to work with

  100.       for me as a youth.  As a result, for over 15 years

  111.    B) Minimum System Requirements
  112.  
  113.       The minimum system requirements for Pit Droids on your
  114.       Windows 95 or 98 system are as follows:
  115.  
  116.       COMPUTER: 100% Windows 95 or 98 DirectX compatible
  117.       computer required.
  118.  
  119.       CPU: Pentium class 166MHz or faster processor
  120.       required.
  121.  
  122.       MEMORY: 32MB RAM minimum required.
  123.  
  124.       GRAPHICS CARD: 100% DirectX compatible PCI or AGP
  125.       graphics card required.
  126.  
  127.       SOUND CARD: 100% DirectX compatible 16-bit sound card
  128.       required.

  130.       CD-ROM DRIVE: 4X IDE or SCSI CD-ROM drive minimum

  145.       must be installed to play Pit Droids.  Please refer to

  149.       HARD DISK SPACE: Demo installation requires 60MB free
  150.       hard disk space.  It is recommend that you have at
  151.       least 50MB free space available after installing the
  152.       game for the Windows swap file.

  154.    C) Installing DirectX 6.1
  155.  
  156.       DirectX 6.1 is included on this CD and must be installed
  157.       to play Pit Droids.  To install DirectX 6.1, follow
  158.       these steps:
  159.  
  160.          1. Insert the Pit Droids Demo CD into your CD-ROM
  161.             drive.
  162.  
  163.          2. Double-click on the MY COMPUTER icon on your
  164.             desktop.
  165.  
  166.          3. Right-click on your CD-ROM drive (typically D:).
  167.  
  168.          4. Select EXPLORE.
  169.  
  170.          5. Double-click on the DIRECTX folder on the CD.
  171.  
  172.          6. Double-click on DXSETUP.
  173.  
  174.          7. Click on the REINSTALL DIRECTX button.

  176.          8. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the

  231.    E) CD-ROM Safety Tips
  232.  
  233.       We do not recommend ejecting your Pit Droids CD while
  234.       the game is running.  Exit out of the game before
  235.       ejecting the CD from the drive.
  236.    
  237.    F) Laptop Systems
  238.  
  239.       While Pit Droids should work fine on most systems
  240.       that meet the minimum hardware specifications, it has
  241.       not been tested with laptop systems and therefore we
  242.       cannot guarantee compatibility.
  243.  
  244.       Due to the wide variety of hardware configurations that
  245.       ship with today's laptop systems, it would be impossible
  246.       to configure a game that would work with all of them.
  247.       Many laptops are limited in their ability to be used as a
  248.       gaming machine because of memory configurations, their
  249.       microchannel architecture, port configurations (i.e. no
  250.       place for a joystick) and sound systems that are primarily
  251.       designed to be used with productivity software.
  252.  
  253.       Laptop systems will also attempt to compress the
  254.       traditional version of the standard 101-function keyboard
  255.       (found on almost all desktop systems) into a much smaller
  256.       key configuration.  This is usually done by relying on
  257.       multi-function keys that allow the user to assign different
  258.       functions to the same key.  Unfortunately, this has been
  259.       known to cause problems with our games.
  260.  
  261.    G) OEM Features on Brand Name Machines
  262.  
  263.       Many brand name computers come with a variety of features
  264.       provided by the manufacturer, including special buttons on
  265.       the keyboard or special functions assigned to buttons
  266.       common to all keyboards.  In general, we recommend that you
  267.       do not use the special buttons or special functions assigned
  268.       to buttons that your machine came with while playing Pit
  269.       Droids.  Contact the manufacturer of your computer for
  270.       more information.
  271.  
  272.    H) Task Switching (or ALT-TAB)
  273.       
  274.       We do not recommend using the Windows task switching
  275.       (ALT-TAB) function with Pit Droids.  If you need to access
  276.       another program on your computer while running the game, we
  277.       recommend that you first quit out of Pit Droids.
  278.       
  279.    I) Game Crash Issues
  280.  
  281.       If the game unexpectedly freezes up, returns you to your
  282.       desktop, or if you experience any other severe problems,
  283.       you should try to properly exit Windows and reboot your
  284.       computer.  (As a rule, you should never turn off your
  285.       computer while the hard drive is active.)  This will help
  286.       to prevent possible problems related to the error that
  287.       you have experienced.
  288.  
  289.       If you end up at a black screen or the screen appears
  290.       frozen, please press ESC, SPACE BAR, or ENTER before
  291.       trying anything else.
  292.  
  293.       If your screen remains black for an extended period of
  294.       time, restart your computer.
  295.  
  296.    J) Internet Explorer 4.0 Active Desktop
  297.  
  298.       If you are using Internet Explorer 4.0, we recommend that
  299.       you disable Active Desktop before playing Pit Droids.
  300.       Active Desktop uses memory and resources that the game
  301.       may need.
  302.  
  303. 2) PLAYING THE STAR WARS PIT DROIDS MEGA DEMO
  304.  
  305.    A) Installation and Start-up
  306.  
  307.       To install the Pit Droids Mega Demo, follow these steps:
  308.  
  309.       1. Insert the Pit Droids Mega Demo CD into your CD-ROM
  310.          drive.
  311.  
  312.       2. Double-click on the MY COMPUTER icon on your
  313.          desktop.
  314.  
  315.       3. Double-click on your CD-ROM drive.
  316.  
  317.       4. Double-click on the INSTALL PIT DROIDS MEGA DEMO
  318.          file.
  319.  
  320.       5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the
  321.          installation.
  322.  
  323.       To start the Pit Droids Demo, follow these steps:
  324.  
  325.       1. Click the START button on the Windows task bar.
  326.  
  327.       2. Select PROGRAMS.
  328.  
  329.       3. Select LUCAS LEARNING.

  331.       4. Select STAR WARS PIT DROIDS MEGA DEMO.

  333.       5. Select PLAY STAR WARS PIT DROIDS MEGA DEMO.

  335.    B) Game Overview
  336.  
  337.       1) Puzzle Training
  338.  
  339.          If you have never played Pit Droids before, Puzzle
  340.          Training is a good place to start.  Puzzle Training
  341.          allows you to solve puzzles with C-3PO as your guide.
  342.          To enter Puzzle Training, scroll to the left in the
  343.          Main Menu and click on PUZZLE TRAINING.  This will
  344.          bring up the Puzzle Training Menu.  From the Puzzle
  345.          Training Menu, you may choose to take C-3PO's guided
  346.          tour or to begin your training directly.
  347.  
  348.          C-3PO's tour will explain all the interface and a
  349.          few of the tiles used throughout the game.  Click on
  350.          the C-3PO'S TOUR button to choose this option.
  351.  
  352.          Click the TRAINING AREA button to begin your training
  353.          directly.  Clicking this button will bring up a
  354.          screen of twenty numbered squares, each representing
  355.          a different level based on a tile or puzzle type used
  356.          in the game.  Click on a square and C-3PO will begin
  357.          your training.  By the time you've completed all of the
  358.          levels*, you should know everything you need to play
  359.          the game.
  360.  
  361.             * NOTE: Some of the Puzzle Training levels are
  362.               only available in the full version of
  363.               Pit Droids.
  364.       
  365.       2) Game Mode
  366.  
  367.          a) Overview
  368.  
  369.             In Game mode, you work to bring groups of pit
  370.             droids from the Transport Ship to the Podrace Arena.
  371.             To get them to the Podrace Arena, you must move them
  372.             through 8* locations.  You must move 144 droids to a
  373.             location before that location "opens".  You must
  374.             maintain 48 droids in an open location to play puzzles
  375.             there.
  376.  
  377.             * NOTE: Most locations are only available in the
  378.               full version of Pit Droids.
  379.  
  380.             The puzzles in Game mode become increasingly
  381.             difficult as you succeed.  You receive a score based
  382.             on how many pit droids you are able to move through
  383.             each specific puzzle, as well as bonus points for
  384.             directing 100% of the droids to their goals in any
  385.             puzzle.
  386.  
  387.             To enter Game mode, click on THE GAME in the Main
  388.             Menu.  This will bring up the Game Menu.  To begin
  389.             a new game, click on the NEW GAME button on the Game
  390.             Menu, then select the difficulty level* of the game
  391.             you wish to play.
  392.  
  393.             * NOTE: Only the 'Easy' difficulty level is
  394.               available in this demo version of Pit Droids.
  395.  
  396.           b) 'Save' and 'Load' Disabled
  397.  
  398.              The 'Save' and 'Load' Game mode options are not
  399.              available in this demo version of Pit droids.
  400.  
  401.       3) Puzzle Chooser
  402.  
  403.          Puzzle Chooser allows you to play Pit Droids puzzles
  404.          one at a time. In the full version of Pit Droids,
  405.          you can even play custom-made puzzles you receive
  406.          from friends and new puzzles you download from the
  407.          Internet.
  408.  
  409.          To enter Puzzle Chooser, scroll to the right in the
  410.          Main Menu and click on PUZZLE CHOOSER.  Here you
  411.          may select a specific puzzle* to play.
  412.  
  413.             * NOTE: Most puzzles, including those that are
  414.               randomly selected by the program for you, are
  415.               only available in the full version of Pit
  416.               Droids.
  417.  
  418.       4) Puzzle Maker
  419.  
  420.          Puzzle Maker allows you to create your own puzzles.
  421.          In the full version of Pit Droids, you can save the
  422.          puzzles you create and trade them with friends.
  423.  
  424.          To enter Puzzle Maker, scroll to the left in the
  425.          Main Menu and click on PUZZLE MAKER.  This will bring
  426.          up the Puzzle Maker Menu, where you can choose to
  427.          take a guided tour of Puzzle Maker (hosted by C-3PO)
  428.          or to start creating puzzles.
  429.  
  430.          C-3PO's tour is a good place to start if you have
  431.          never used Puzzle Maker.  Click on the TUTORIAL button
  432.          on the Puzzle Maker Menu and C-3PO will explain how
  433.          to use Puzzle Maker.
  434.  
  435.          To begin creating puzzles, click on MAKE NEW PUZZLES
  436.          on the Puzzle Maker Menu, then choose a location* and
  437.          start building.
  438.  
  439.             * NOTE: Only the Transport Ship location is
  440.               available in this demo version of Pit Droids.
  441.  
  442.       5) Options
  443.  
  444.          You can set global options* for Pit Droids in the
  445.          Options screen.  To enter the Options screen, scroll
  446.          to the right in the Main Menu and click on OPTIONS.
  447.  
  448.             * NOTE: Some options are only available in the full
  449.               version of Pit Droids.
  450.  
  451.    C) Getting Help in the Game
  452.  
  453.       Should you get stuck while playing the Pit Droids Demo,
  454.       help is always available:
  455.  
  456.       1) R2-D2
  457.  
  458.          a) Overview
  459.  
  460.             R2-D2 is available to help you whenever you see
  461.             his icon on the game screen.  To get help from
  462.             R2-D2, click on his icon.  This will cause your
  463.             mouse cursor to change to an image of R2-D2.  Point
  464.             this cursor at anything on the game screen, and
  465.             R2-D2 will display information about the item.
  466.             Click anywhere to turn R2-D2 off.
  467.  
  468.          b) Obtaining R2-D2 Help About Tiles
  469.  
  470.             To obtain help from R2-D2 about a specific tile in
  471.             the game, hold the R2-D2 Help cursor over the base
  472.             of the tile.      
  473.  
  474.       2) C-3PO
  475.  
  476.          In Puzzle Training, C-3PO will explain individual
  477.          puzzle types and game pieces.  Click on C-3PO after
  478.          his explanation of a puzzle is finished for a helpful
  479.          hint.  Click on him again and he will show you a
  480.          solution to the current puzzle.  You can get
  481.          additional help from C-3PO by clicking on the C-3PO'S
  482.          TOUR button on the Puzzle Training Menu.
  483.  
  484.          In Puzzle Maker, click on the TUTORIAL button on the
  485.          Puzzle Maker Menu to hear C-3PO explain how to create
  486.          puzzles.

  488.    D) Skipping Movies
  489.  
  490.       To skip through any of the Pit Droids movies, click
  491.       the mouse or press any key on the computer keyboard.
  492.  
  493.    E) Pausing the Game
  494.  
  495.       Click on the PAUSE button at the bottom center of the
  496.       game screen, or press the SPACE BAR on your keyboard to
  497.       pause the movement of the pit droids during gameplay.
  498.       Click the PAUSE button or press the SPACE BAR again to
  499.       unpause the pit droids.

  543.          Shift                  Holding down Shift allows you to
  544.                                 extend your selection with the Select

  548.          Ctrl + Wand Tool       Pressing the Ctrl key and using the
  549.                                 Wand tool allows you to select all
  550.                                 pieces of the same type in a puzzle,
  551.                                 regardless of whether they are
  552.                                 touching or not. This is very useful
  553.                                 for dragging all of the arrows from
  554.                                 your puzzle to the inventory.

  600.       All keyboard commands are disabled when the Inventory is
  601.       open.

  603.    H) 'Start Puzzles Paused' Option in Tutorials

  605.       Selecting 'Start Puzzles Paused' in the game Options
  606.       screen causes the pit droids to be paused at the start of
  607.       every regular puzzle.  However, choosing this option will
  608.       not effect puzzles in the Puzzle Maker Tutorial or the Puzzle
  609.       Training Tour.

  611.    I) Uninstalling The Pit Droids Mega Demo
  612.  
  613.       To uninstall the Pit Droids Mega Demo, follow these steps:
  614.  
  615.       1. Click on the START button on the Windows task bar.
  616.  
  617.       2. Select PROGRAMS.
  618.  
  619.       3. Select LUCAS LEARNING.
  620.  
  621.       4. Select STAR WARS PIT DROIDS MEGA DEMO.
  622.  
  623.       5. Select UNINSTALL PIT DROIDS.
  624.  
  625.       6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the
  626.          uninstall process.

  647.       on the speaker icon in the right corner of the Windows
  648.       task bar.  You may then adjust the volume as desired.

  652.       Pit Droids features a unique sound effect structure in
  653.       which the droid and tile sounds are synched with the
  654.       ambient music of the game.  Thus, the volume levels of

  656.       Effects volume slider in the Options screen like all

  658.       volume level of any of the droid or tile sound effects
