  37. Part 1: MICROSOFT OUTLOOK EXPRESS
  38. =================================
  39.  
  40. Outlook Express is an Internet standards based e-mail and news 
  41. reader.
  42.  
  43. To read e-mail with Outlook Express, you must be using a mail system
  44. that uses SMTP and POP3 or IMAP protocols. If you don't know whether 
  45. your e-mail system supports Outlook Express, contact your administrator 
  46. or your Internet service provider and ask if they support POP3 or IMAP 
  47. mail clients.
  48.  
  49. You can use Outlook Express to read newsgroups, or discussion groups,
  50. such as the Usenet, by using NNTP-based news servers. Contact your
  51. Internet service provider (ISP) or network administrator for the
  52. name of the news server that you should use. Outlook Express can also
  53. be used to receive support for a variety of Microsoft products on the
  54. news server msnews.microsoft.com.
  55.  
  56. Outlook Express also includes Windows Address Book version 5, which
  57. provides rich contact management capabilities, including the ability to
  58. create groups of contacts and folders to help you organize your e-mail
  59. and personal addresses. The Windows Address Book also provides access to
  60. Internet directories that use LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol).
  61. Internet directories are an easy way to find e-mail or street addresses. 
  62. A number of  popular Internet directories are pre-configured for easy 
  63. access.

  66. Part 2: NEW FEATURES IN THIS RELEASE

  69. - Identities for multiple users.
  70.   With the Identity Manager, you can create profiles for different Outlook
  71.   Express users. These profiles are shared by applications such as Outlook 
  72.   Express and Windows Address Book.
  73.  
  74. - Support for Hotmail accounts.
  75.   Outlook Express can now read and manage your Hotmail Inbox and folders, as
  76.   well as synchronize your Hotmail contacts with the contacts in your Windows
  77.   Address Book.
  78.  
  79. - Offline support and message synchronization.
  80.   You can download News and IMAP folders for viewing offline. Actions
  81.   performed offline (such as sending messages and moving messages
  82.   within an IMAP account) will be performed when you go back online.

  84. - Contacts pane.
  85.   The contacts in your Windows Address Book are now visible in the main
  86.   Outlook Express window.

  88. - Enhanced message rules.
  89.   Enhanced rules support for more criteria and actions, including blocking

  93.   You can create an unlimited number of signatures, and each signature
  94.   can be associated with one or more mail or news accounts.

  98.   installed on your machine with your mail accounts and automatically 
  99.   adds digital certificates that others send you to the Windows Address Book.

  102.   It's easy to place a telephone call to a contact in the Windows Address 
  103.   Book using the phone dialer installed on your system.

  105. - IMAP drafts and sent items.
  106.   Outlook Express can store in-progress messages in a server-based Drafts
  107.   folder and store copies of sent messages in a Sent Items folder on the 
  108.   IMAP server.

  110. - IMAP folder manager.
  111.   You can customize which IMAP folders are visible or hidden (subscribed or
  112.   unsubscribed) in the folder list.

  114. - Advanced Internet directory search.
  115.   Searches against Internet directory (LDAP) servers can be performed with
  116.   additional criteria and logical operators.

  118. - Watch conversation and ignore conversation.
  119.   You can designate a news or mail conversation as "watched" so that you
  120.   can see when new messages arrive on that topic. You can also designate a
  121.   conversation as "ignored" so that you will not see future messages on
  122.   that topic.

  124. - HTML source editing.
  125.   You can easily edit the source of an HTML message to include advanced
  126.   HTML tags.

  128. - Customizable message filters.
  129.   You can customize what messages are hidden or shown based on more than a
  130.   dozen criteria.

  132. - Stationery wizard.
  133.   It's now even easier to customize HTML stationery, including setting up
  134.   margins, fonts, background images, and colors.

  136. - Improved connection management
  137.   Outlook Express 5 can share connection settings with Internet Explorer 5,
  138.   and detects when you have disconnected your phone or have disconnected 
  139.   from a LAN. When a connection is needed, Outlook Express will now connect
  140.   automatically or prompt you.

  143. Part 3: KNOWN ISSUES IN THIS RELEASE
  144. ====================================
  145.  
  146. - Junk mail filtering is not available in this version of Outlook Express.
  147.  
  148. - The Identity Manager provides an easy way to group user settings and
  149.   change users across applications, but it does not provide security for
  150.   messages, application settings, and digital certificates. If you need 
  151.   stronger security, you should use Windows logon profiles to manage 
  152.   user settings.
  153.  
  154. - When uninstalling Outlook Express 5, the messages you have received in 
  155.   Outlook Express 5 will remain in the Outlook Express 5 message files.
  156.   If you were previously running Outlook Express 4 or Internet Mail and
  157.   News, only the messages you received in those programs will be there 
  158.   after uninstall.
  159.  
  160. - After uninstalling Outlook Express 5, you can import messages received
  161.   in Outlook Express 5 into Outlook Express 4: In Outlook Express 4, click
  162.   on File, then click Import, click Messages, and then follow the on-screen
  163.   instructions.
  164.  
  165. - If you install Outlook 98 after installing Outlook Express 5, the shortcut
  166.   to the Microsoft Outlook Newsreader may not work. To fix, open your start
  167.   menu and click Programs, right-click the Microsoft Outlook Newsreader in 
  168.   the list of Programs on the start menu and then click Properties. In the
  169.   Target box, type (exactly as below):
  170.  
  171.   "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews
  172.  
  173. - When importing contacts into Microsoft Phone, the contacts show up in Phone
  174.   but not in the Windows Address Book. The workaround is to click on the File
  175.   menu in Outlook Express, then click Import, and run through the import
  176.   again. Then the contacts will show up in the Address Book.
  177.  
  178. - In order for Outlook Express to work on a dual-boot machine, you must install
  179.   the same version of Outlook Express on both operating systems.
  180.  
  181. - If you were using the PGP plug-in to Outlook Express 4, you must uninstall it 
  182.   before installing Outlook 5. If you installed Outlook Express 5 before 
  183.   uninstalling the PGP plug-in, Outlook Express 5 will not start. To
  184.   fix, uninstall Outlook Express 5, uninstall the PGP plug-in from the Add/Remove 
  185.   Programs Control Panel, and then install Outlook Express 5.
  186.  
  187. - You cannot use Outlook Express to access your e-mail account with 
  188.   any of the following services: MS Mail, cc:Mail, CompuServe, America
  189.   Online (AOL), or Microsoft Exchange Server prior to version 5.
  190.  
  191. - You will not be able to see embedded objects or images sent from
  192.   people using Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, or Windows
  193.   Messaging. File attachments work fine, however.
  194.  
  195. - If you used Internet News for reading newsgroups, any messages
  196.   in your "Posted Items" folder will be moved into the "Sent Items 
  197.   folder when you upgrade to Outlook Express.
  198.  
  199. - Outlook Express shows subscribed IMAP folders only in the
  200.   folder list. It no longer shows all your folders (subscribed and
  201.   unsubscribed).  
  202.  
  203. - The View filter "Show Replies to my Messages" only shows message conversations 
  204.   for which you were the author of the original post. Replies to your 
  205.   replies will not be visible.
  206.  
  207. - Message Rules are not available for IMAP accounts.
  208.  
  209. - If the option is set to encrypt all outgoing messages, any rules with the action
  210.   "Forward" in them will not be executed. 
  211.  
  212. - Messages received without proper character set encoding information can be
  213.   read by selecting the proper encoding from the View menu. However, forwarding
  214.   or replying to these messages after choosing Auto Select will improperly mark
  215.   the character set on the outgoing message. To avoid this problem, select the 
  216.   another encoding when forwarding or replying to messages with no character set
  217.   encoding information.
  218.  
  219. - HTTP mail accounts do not support folder names that contain a forward slash ("/"). 
  220.   If a folder name on an HTTP account contains this character, use a Web browser such
  221.   as Internet Explorer to access your account and rename the folder. Hotmail accounts 
  222.   can be accessed at http://www.hotmail.com/.
  223.

  225. Part 4: TROUBLESHOOTING
  226. =======================
  227.  
  228. - If you are unable to send or receive mail, make sure of the following:
  229.  
  230.   1. The TCP/IP protocol is installed on your computer.
  231.   2. All cables are properly connected to your computer, modem, or LAN.
  232.   3. You have a PPP or SLIP account with your Internet service
  233.      provider.
  234.   4. Your Internet service provider or LAN server supports POP3 or
  235.      IMAP and SMTP.
  236.   5. Your modem communication parameters (baud rate and type of 
  237.      protocol) are set correctly.
  238.  
  239. - If you are unable to read or post news, make sure that you use an account
  240.   name and password for a news server only if it requires them. If you use 
  241.   an account name and password and they are not required, you will not be able
  242.   to connect to the news server.
  243.  
  244. - If you run into a problem, try the Troubleshooting section in 
  245.   online Help:
  246.  
  247.   1. On the Help menu, and then click Contents and Index.
  248.   2. Click the "Troubleshooting" topic on the Contents tab.
  249.   3. Click "If you have trouble using Outlook Express."

  256. - To access the Microsoft peer product support newsgroups, folllow
  257.   these steps:
  258.  
  259.   1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  260.   2. On the News tab, click Add, and then click News
  261.   3. Follow the directions on your screen.
  262.   4. When you are prompted for a server name, type
  263.      msnews.microsoft.com 
  264.  
  265.      If that name isn't found by your Internet service provider, you 
  266.      can type 131.107.3.27 instead.
  267.  
  268.   You do not need to log on to this news server.
  269.

  271. Part 5: TIPS AND TRICKS
  272. =======================
  273.  
  274. - To send a message to someone in the Windows Address Book,
  275.   double-click on the name of the contact in the Contacts area.
  276.  
  277. - To edit the source of an HTML message you are writing, on 
  278.   View menu, click Source Edit. Three tabs will appear at the
  279.   bottom of the Window. Click the Source tab to see and change
  280.   the HTML.
  281.  
  282. - To change the New Mail Notification sound, double-click the Sounds
  283.   icon in Control Panel, and select New Mail Notification from the events 
  284.   list. Use the drop-down list in the Sound section to see your choices.
  285.  
  286. - To look up a person's e-mail address when sending mail, use the Check
  287.   Names command, available on the Tools menu or on the New Message toolbar.
  288.   The name will become underlined when the associated address is found.
  289.  
  290. - To send a mail message in Plain Text only (no HTML formatting),
  291.   on the Format menu, click Plain Text. To make Plain Text the default 
  292.   setting for new messages, replies, and forwarded messages, on the Tools
  293.   menu, click Options, click the Send tab, and then select Plain Text under
  294.   Mail Sending Format. (News messages are sent in Plain Text by default, 
  295.   but similarly, this setting can be changed under News Sending Format.)
  296.  
  297. - To customize the toolbar, right-click it and use the menu commands 
  298.   to perform the desired actions.
  299.  
  300. - You can resize the preview pane or the message list by dragging the
  301.   divider between the preview pane and the message list.
  302.  
  303. - You can change how the preview pane splits, or turn it off entirely,
  304.   by clicking the View menu, clicking Layout, and then changing the options
  305.   in the dialog box.
  306.  
  307. - To view the e-mail address of someone who has sent you a message,
  308.   double-click the message to open it, then double-click the author's 
  309.   name in the From field. You can also add this person to your Address
  310.   Book by right-clicking the name, and then clicking Add To Address 
  311.   Book.
  312.  
  313. - To view responses to a particular message in a newsgroup, click the
  314.   plus sign (+) next to the message. The responses appear indented
  315.   below it.
  316.  
  317. - In mail, you can leave a copy of your messages on the server. To set
  318.   this option, on the Tools menu, click Accounts. Select the mail account
  319.   you want to modify, and then click Properties. Click the Advanced tab, 
  320.   and then check the Leave A Copy Of Messages On Server check box.
  321.  
  322. - You can search for newsgroups that contain specific words in their 
  323.   names. To do this:
  324.  
  325.   1. On the Tools menu, click Newsgroups. 
  326.   2. In the "Display newsgroups which contain" box, enter the words
  327.      separated by a space.
  328.  
  329.   You can also search newsgroup descriptions. If you cannot see the
  330.   descriptions, on the Tools menu click Accounts. Select the news account
  331.   you want to modify, click Properties, and then click the Advanced tab. 
  332.   Next, check the Use Newsgroup Descriptions check box.á Click the Tools
  333.   menu again, and then click Newsgroups. In the Newsgroups window, click 
  334.   the "Reset List" button.
  335.  
  336. - To reorder columns, you can drag and drop column headings. Columns
  337.   can be resized by dragging the right edge of the column header. 
  338.  
  339. - To hang up, choose Work Offline from the File menu and click Yes when
  340.   asked if you want to hang up.
  341.  
  342. - To make Outlook Express connect and check mail on a regular interval,
  343.   make sure the option to "Send and receive messages every X minutes" is 
  344.   enabled and change "If my computer is not connected at this time" to 
  345.   "Always Connect" or "Connect if Work Offline is not checked." These
  346.   settings are on the General tab in Options available in the Tools menu.
  347.  
  348. - If any of your mail or news accounts requires you to use a specific
  349.   ISP connection, enable the option to "Always connect to this account
  350.   using" and select the appropriate account. This option is available in
  351.   the Connection tab in the Properties of each account. This option is
  352.   mainly used by people who use multiple connections, such as LAN and a 
  353.   dial-up connection or two dial-up connections.
  354.  
  355. - To check for new messages at start up, enable the option to "Send and 
  356.   receive messages every X minutes" on the General tab in Options and make 
  357.   sure that each account you want to check has the option to "Include this 
  358.   account in Send and Receive All" enabled on the General tab in the 
  359.   Properties of each account. The option "At Start up, ask me if I would 
  360.   like to connect" only initiates a connection. It does not check for mail.
  361.   
  362. - The Dial-up Connection option "At Start up, ask me if I would like to 
  363.   connect" will always prompt you to dial a modem at start up even if a
  364.   LAN connection exists. If you primarily use LAN, turn off this option.
  365.  
  366. - To disable the "Connect automatically" behavior for any of your dial-up
  367.   accounts, click Cancel while connecting to the account. This will bring
  368.   up the Dial-up Connection window and allow you to uncheck the "Connect 
  369.   automatically" option.
  370.  
  371. - If you are running Outlook Express on Windows NT and you need to add
  372.   support for a different language, double-click the Keyboard icon in
  373.   Control Panel, and then click Add. Follow the instructions on your
  374.   screen. This installs the appropriate NLS (National Language
  375.   Support) files. You do not have to use the associated keyboard
  376.   layout.
