  13. Thanks to the Beta testers for their many hours of testing,
  14. helpful comments and suggestions for improvements. Some of 
  15. the suggestions have been incorporated in this version and
  16. all of them will be reviewed for future versions.
  17.  
  18. ------------------------- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  19.  
  20. GEnie Front End requires 2,000,000 bytes of space on the 
  21. installation drive and (depending on whether Microsoft's
  22. "MFC" and "ODBC" components already happen to be installed
  23. on your computer) up to 2,000,000 bytes in the Windows and 
  24. Windows\System directories.
  25.  
  26. Before running GEnie Front End, you must have installed 
  27. Windows 3.1.  GEnie Front End also requires a 386-or-later 
  28. processor and a Hayes-compatible, MNP-capable modem. The
  29. recommended minimum memory is 4 megabytes. A VGA or better
  30. monitor is also recommended.
  31.  
  32. If you downloaded the abbreviated (update) form of GEnie 
  33. Front End, version 1.00 Beta or later must be installed and 
  34. operable on your computer.

  37. ------------------------ SETUP INSTRUCTIONS
  38.  
  39. 1. Disable any anti-virus software that might foil GEnie Setup.
  40. You may re-enable the anti-virus software after installation.
  41.  
  42. 2. Make sure you have at least 200,000 bytes free on the disk
  43. that contains the Windows directory.  You may need up to 
  44. 4,000,000 bytes there (see above).
  45.  
  46. 3. After installation (from either the INSTALL icon or by typing
  47. INSTGENI from the \GENIE directory on the PC Gamer CD) type SETUP
  48. at the \GENTEMP directory that was created on your hard drive.
  49.  
  50. 4. Setup displays:
  51.    -- Choose OK to accept the default GEnie location,
  52.       or enter a new path below.
  53.  
  54. Name a directory that GEnie Front End can have all to itself.
  55. If a version of GEnie Front End is already installed, Setup 
  56. recommends its directory.
  57.  
  58. 5. If Setup detects a prior version of the GEnie Front End on
  59. your computer, you may continue using your old Filing Cabinet,
  60. To-Do list, and Address Book, or have Setup install new, empty
  61. files.  Setup offers two choices:
  62.    ( ) Transfer your current working files
  63.    ( ) Install new (empty) data files
  64.  
  65. If you choose "Transfer", Setup copies your old files into the
  66. new GEnie Front End directory.  If you're updating in-place, 
  67. Setup doesn't copy the files, since they're already there.
  68.  
  69. 6. Setup may display:
  70.    -- GEnie requires a directory for temporary files.
  71.       May Setup add a line to AUTOEXEC.BAT to define a 'TEMP' 
  72.       directory?
  73.  
  74. GEnie Front End and many other applications use a directory 
  75. specified in your AUTOEXEC.BAT for temporary files.  If Setup 
  76. does not detect a "TEMP" directory, it offers to create one 
  77. and to add a "SET TEMP=..." line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  78.  
  79.    ** The TEMP directory is very important for GEnie Front End.
  80.       Answer 'yes' unless you are an expert and will take
  81.       other appropriate measures.
  82.  
  83.    ** Do not use a RAM disk for temporary files.
  84.       The GEnie Front End sometimes requires several million
  85.       bytes of temporary space.
  86.  
  87.    ** Use a subdirectory for temporary files, not a top-level
  88.       location like "C:\" or "D:\".
  89.  
  90. 7. Setup may display:
  91.    -- Should Setup create a "GEnie" program item?
  92.  
  93. You may start the GEnie Front End by double-clicking its icon
  94. in Program Manager (or on the Norton Desktop) if you answer
  95. Yes.  (Or, you may create the program item yourself later.)
  96.  
  97. 8. Restart Windows or reboot, as recommended by Setup, before
  98. running the GEnie Front End.
  99.  
  100. 9. If Setup updated an existing FE.INI file, it left your
  101. mail and software-library download-directory settings alone.
  102. If you installed the update in a new directory, and want mail 
  103. and software-library downloads to go to the Front End 
  104. directory, you may wish to revisit those settings.
  105.  
  106. 10. Setup creates a cumulative log file (GENIEINS.LOG) in your 
  107. Windows directory.  If you have trouble installing GEnie Front
  108. End, you might submit your log for scrutiny.
  109.

  111. ------------------------- "JOIN GENIE" INSTRUCTIONS
  112.  
  113. Double-click the GEnie program item in Program Manager 
  114. to start the GEnie Front End.  (Or, you may double-click 
  115. FE.EXE in the File Manager.)
  116.  
  117. If the login window shows the user ID "JoinGEnie",
  118. you have the "Join GEnie" edition of GEnie Front End.
  119. Press Enter to display the Connection Settings.
  120. Verify the telephone number and select a port (probably COM1 
  121. or COM2).  When you choose OK, GEnie Front End dials and logs
  122. on.
  123.  
  124.    The Canadian telephone number is 1-800-387-8330.
  125.  
  126. Once you have your own GEnie User ID and password, choose
  127. Settings/Connection from the File menu.  Erase the "Join
  128. GEnie" user ID and password.  You may type your personal
  129. User ID and password here for added convenience, but you
  130. may wish to leave the password field blank for security.
  131. (The password is saved in plain text in FE.INI.)

  133. While you're on-line, obtain the GEnie telephone number
  134. for subscribers.  From the File menu, choose Settings, then
  135. Connection, and replace the "Join GEnie" phone number with
  136. the subscriber phone number.

  142. If you choose to rearrange the files or directories on your 
  143. disk, it may help you to know the whereabouts of the Front
  144. End files.
  145.  
  146. . Files Setup puts in the Front End directory.

  149. or Windows\System directory if you don't already have them
  150. or Setup has a newer version than you do.  These may 
  151. be used by several applications, not just the GEnie Front

  167. ODBC.INI tells the Front End where to find the filing cabinet 
  168. (GENIEDB.MDB and .LDB), so if you move the filing cabinet or 
  169. rename a directory that contains it, correct its name in 
  170. ODBC.INI (use Notepad). If you move the address book 
  171. (ADDRBOOK.) or to-do (TDMO.PER) file, update the filename on 
  172. the appropriate File|Settings dialog within the Front End.
