Happy Holidays, and welcome to PC Gamer's special December 1997 Dual CD issue of Disc 3.9!
Not only do we have the hottest, newest demos for you to experience, from the graphic adventures of George and Nico in Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror to horror and action galore in Resident Evil, but we've also put together ten of the best demos of 1997! How's that for a holiday gift?
Since this is a special dual CD set, there's some differences from our normal front end. For starters, we will install some files on your hard drive to run the program. Don't worry -- we're only installing under two megs of data, and we're not touching any of your highly sensitive Windows files! It's just the projector to view the contents of the disc. To install The CD, follow these easy steps:
TO INSTALL THE DECEMBER 1997 CD:
For Windows 95:
1) Click on the Start button, and choose Run.
2) Type "X:\SETUP95\SETUP95" (without the quotes, and where X: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).
3) Run the PC Gamer front end by double-clicking the newly created program icon.
For Windows 3.1:
1) In the Program Manager, click on File, then on Run.
2) Type "X:\SETUP31\SETUP31" (without the quotes, and where X: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).
3) Run the PC Gamer front end by double-clicking the newly created program icon.
And that's all there is to it!
You can uninstall our front end by double-clicking on the Uninstall icon.
If, for some reason, the uninstall doesn't work, or you'd rather do it yourself, simply delete the contents of the \PCGAMER directory. Those are the only files copied to your computer.
THINGS TO LOOK FOR:
There are a couple of things you might want to look out for while using our Dual CD set. None of them are harmful, but you might get some error messages you weren't expecting, so we thought we'd explain what they might be. If something isn't listed here that you encountered, go to our CD-ROM Support Site on the web at http://support.imagine-inc.com. You'll find the most up-to-date FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions), where you'll more than likely find the answer to your question, and an area to send us some E-mail describing your problem. Please, if you do send us E-mail, be as detailed as possible when describing any errors, and let us know what system components are on your computer.
-When you run our CD, make sure you're not Exploring The CD in the background. In other words, if you've double-clicked on the My Computer icon, and then on the CD icon, and then run our front end, you might get an error message when you swap discs to install a program on the other CD. This is because Windows 95 automatically detects when you eject a CD, and closes the Explorer window looking at the contents. If this happens, you might get an error. If you do, just reboot your computer and continue browsing The CD either solely through the Explorer, or just using the front end.
-Sometimes, when you click to install a program, it takes a while for the installation program to load and run, so it might look like nothing's happening. We assure you, it's working. Just be patient.
-If you quit the front end with Disc Two in your drive, you might get a Windows 95 error message asking you to insert the first CD into your drive, and hit Enter. If you do this, it will quit normally. If you hit Escape instead, you will get an error message telling you that START95 caused a protection error. Just click on Close, and proceed normally. No harm, no foul.
