  23.  
  24. The RealAudio Player for Windows 95 and Windows NT
  25. consists of the following files:

  28. RALICENS.TXT, RA32.DLL, RA3228_8.DLL, 
  29. RAGUI32.DLL, RAOCX32.DLL, NPRA32.DLL

  34. System Requirements
  35.  
  36. To play RealAudio files, your system must meet
  37. the following requirements:
  38.  
  39.    * 486/33 SX or better PC running Microsoft 
  40.      Windows NT or Windows 95
  41.  
  42.    * 8 MB RAM.
  43.  
  44.    * 2 MB free disk space.
  45.  
  46.    * A sound card with a Windows Sound driver.
  47.      (The RealAudio Player is not compatible with the
  48.      PC Speaker program or other software programs which
  49.      simulate a sound card.)
  50.  
  51.    * An Internet Connection. Either a direct connection
  52.      or a 14.4 Kbps or better modem with a SLIP or PPP
  53.      connection to an Internet Service Provider.
  54.  
  55.    * A 32-bit winsock.
  56.  
  57. RealAudio now offers 28.8 content.  To listen to
  58. RealAudio 28.8, you need:
  59.  
  60.    * 486/66 DX or better running Microsoft 
  61.      Windows 95 or Windows NT.

  63.    * An Internet Connection.  Either a direct connection
  64.      or a 28.8 Kbps or better modem with a SLIP or PPP
  65.      connection to an Internet Service Provider.

  71.   * RealAudio 28.8 - RealAudio 28.8 is a new algorithm that provides
  72.     enhanced sound quality to all users who have a 28.8 Kbps modem
  73.     or better connection to the Internet. This near-FM (monophonic) 
  74.     sound quality greatly enhances the clarity of music and voice 
  75.     delivered in real-time over the Internet.

  77.   * Plug-in - The new RealAudio Plug-in allows content creators to 
  78.     seamlessly integrate RealAudio directly into their Web page 
  79.     layouts.

  81.   * Firewall Proxy Support - RealAudio supports the RealAudio
  82.     Proxy allowing safe access to RealAudio content through firewalls.

  109. Sound Quality
  110. If you are experiencing poor sound quality there are several simple 
  111. steps you can take to determine the cause.  First, use the Connection 
  112. Statistics box to determine if there is packet loss.  Packet loss 
  113. during transmission over the Internet is the main cause of poor 
  114. sound quality.
  115.  
  116. If packet loss does not seem to be causing poor sound quality, you can
  117. try adjusting the way the RealAudio Player delivers sound to your 
  118. computer's sound card. Choose Preferences from the View menu and then
  119. select the Advanced tab.  You will see check boxes for "Use 8-bit Only" 
  120. and "Use 11 kHz only":
  121.  
  122. Use 8-bit Only
  123. ------------------
  124. Use this option only if there is evidence of compatibility problems 
  125. with your soundcard.  The Player normally delivers 16-bit audio to the
  126. sound card.  If the sound card only supports 8-bit audio, the Player 
  127. delivers 8-bit audio.  If your sound card fails to inform the RealAudio 
  128. Player that it only supports 8-bit audio, you may hear only random or 
  129. garbled sound when playing clips.  Check this option to override the 
  130. 16-bit default and play 8-bit sound.

  132. Use 11 kHz Only
  133. ---------------------
  134. Use this option only if there is evidence of compatibility problems 
  135. with your sound card.  The Player normally delivers 8 kHz audio to the
  136. sound card.  If your sound card does not support the 8 kHz sampling 
  137. rate, the audio may sound high-pitched or too fast.  Check this 
  138. option to instruct the Player to convert audio to 11 kHz before 
  139. delivering it to the sound card. This option increases CPU usage 
  140. slightly.

  147. Select FAQ and from there choose the "Audio Quality" entry.

  149. Please note that to receive RealAudio 28.8 you should have at least
  150. a 19.2 Kbps connection to your Internet Service Provider.  In a
  151. 19.2 Kbps connection you may hear slight gaps in the audio.
  152.  
  153. Dial-up users should be sure to keep the network connection preference
  154. as UDP (the default).  In TCP mode, no audio packets are lost,
  155. but their arrival may be late enough to cause gapping in the audio.
  156. TCP mode is useful when you are directly connected (via a
  157. local area network) to the internet.

  161. Known Problems
  162.  
  163.    * Starting or quitting large applications while playing
  164.      RealAudio can cause some brief disruption of the playback.
  165.  
  166.    * Playback on some 486/25 SX computers does not work properly.
  167.  
  168.    * The user interface during playback of 28.8 content on slower
  169.      systems may have slow response time.  Performance of other
  170.      applications may suffer during playback.  To improve system 
  171.      performance select the General tab from the View|Preferences menu
  172.      and adjust the Best Audio Quality/Lowest CPU Usage slider.

  177. Browser Upgrade
  178.  
  179. After you upgrade your browser, you may lose the configuration 
  180. information for the RealAudio player. The easiest way to 
  181. re-configure your browser is to re-install the player.
