To the surprise of American leaders, the Communist forces launched a nation-wide attack throughout South Vietnam during the Tet New Year truce. Especially hard hit was the city of Hue, where fighting raged for over a month. Companies A and C, 1st Battalion, US Marines, with some tank support, headed north from Phu Bai to relieve the garrison at the MACV HQ in Hue, which was under heavy siege by the 804th NVA Battalion.
