  4. Thank you very much for purchasing `Duke It Out In D.C.' for Duke Nukem 3D.
  5. This help file will aid you through the installation process of the `Duke It
  6. Out In D.C.' add-on pack and the GAMER (Game Add-on Manager) program. GAMER
  7. was written specifically to install add-on packs (.SSI files) developed by
  8. Sunstorm Interactive for many current games on the market.
  9.  
  10. The `Duke It Out In D.C.' add-on pack will replace Episode 3 in Duke Nukem 3D.
  11. Quick note: We have included a new ending animation which will play when you
  12. complete the entire `Duke It Out In D.C.' episode. When this new animation
  13. starts, don't press any keys or you will skip right past the exciting
  14. conclusion!

  17. Installing `Duke It Out In D.C.'
  18. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

  20. Please note that the `Duke It Out In D.C.' add-on is only tested and designed
  21. for Duke 3D version 1.3d, 1.4 and 1.5. Any other updates made to Duke after
  22. the release of this are not tested or supported for this add-on.
  23.  
  24. To run the install program, make sure the `Duke It Out In D.C.' CD is in your
  25. CDROM drive and type #:\INSTALL. Replace # with whatever the letter of your
  26. CDROM drive is.
  27.  
  28. The install program will begin with a title screen explaining a little
  29. information about this product. Press <ENTER> after reading this and the
  30. program will then begin collecting information needed to install the
  31. add-on pack.
  32.  
  33. One thing to remember, you can hit <ESC> at anytime during the installation
  34. process and exit without any changes being made to your computer. The only
  35. time this is not true, is when the files are actually being copied over
  36. and the GAMER software is being setup.
  37.  
  38. Another thing to remember, you can install GAMER on one drive, say the
  39. E: drive... and still have Duke Nukem 3D on a different drive, say the
  40. C: drive. This is, assuming both of those drive letters are valid.
  41.  
  42. The first step is to either locate the GAMER software, or create a new
  43. location for it. GAMER is designed to work with any add-on pack developed by
  44. Sunstorm Interactive for any game. Thus, it is best to keep it in a directory
  45. by itself, rather than with Duke Nukem 3D. The suggested directory location
  46. is C:\GAMER or C:\GAMES\GAMER
  47.  
  48. The installer will attempt to detect the GAMER software automatically. If
  49. it is unable to locate it, then you will be prompted to type in a directory
  50. where the GAMER software is located or you would like to install it into.
  51. Type in the appropriate directory (including the DRIVE letter) and press
  52. <ENTER>. If the directory is acceptable, then a window will appear stating
  53. that everything is valid, and if you wish to accept the directory. Select
  54. yes to move on in the installation process or no to enter a new directory.
  55.  
  56. The installer will attempt to locate a copy of Duke Nukem 3D. If it does,
  57. a window will appear asking if you wish to accept this. If this is the
  58. copy/version of Duke you play then select yes. If you select no, or the
  59. installer cannot find a copy of Duke a window will appear asking you to type
  60. the path where Duke Nukem 3D is located on your hard drive. Duke Nukem 3D MUST
  61. be installed, otherwise the install program will not accept a directory and
  62. the GAMER software will not be installed. This is to prevent future problems
  63. that could be caused by Duke not being installed.
  64.  
  65. Note: If you have more than one version of Duke installed, and it detects a
  66. different version than you want to install the add-on for, then simply enter
  67. the correct directory for the other version. This allows you to install Duke
  68. it out in D.C. for both the regular version and the Atomic editions of Duke.
  69.  
  70. You will then be told installation is about to begin. Hit <ENTER> to continue
  71. or <ESC> to exit the install process.
  72.  
  73. The new `Duke It Out In D.C.' add-on pack will then be copied over. If you
  74. already have a copy of the GAMER software on your computer, the installer
  75. will detect if it is older or newer than the one on the installation disk.
  76. If it is older, the new version will be copied over, otherwise the one on
  77. your computer will be left alone.
  78.  
  79. When the files are finished copying over, the installation process is
  80. complete. Be sure to read the readme.txt that was copied into the GAMER
  81. software directory during installation. It will give detailed instructions
  82. on installing, un-installing and removing add-on packs for your games.

  88. How to install `Duke It Out In D.C.' and GAMER if the install program fails
  89. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

  91. If you take this a step at a time, it is pretty long, but fairly straight
  92. forward. Please don't try to skip sections, as you might miss something that
  93. seems minor, but winds up causing things to get crazy.
  94.  
  95. This assumes that you already know the basics about DOS, switching drives,
  96. making directories, copying files, etc.
  97.  
  98. If a version of GAMER is already installed, skip this part and go to the next
  99. portion about "IF A VERSION OF GAMER IS ALREADY INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER".

  102.  IF A VERSION OF GAMER IS *NOT* INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER YET
  103. ***************************************************************

  105. 1) At the DOS prompt, or in Windows DOS box, go to the drive you wish to
  106. install the GAMER software and `Duke It Out In D.C.'. This is usually the same 
  107. drive as where Duke Nukem 3D and your other games are installed.
  108.  
  109. 2) Make a new directory to put the GAMER software into. Preferably #:\GAMER
  110. or #:\GAMES\GAMER where # is the letter of the drive to install to.
  111.  
  112. 3) Go to the `Duke It Out In D.C.' CD, and change directories into the DUKEDC
  113. directory. You should see five files:
  114.  
  115. DUKEDC13.SSI
  116. DUKEDCPP.SSI
  117. GAMER.EXE
  118. README.TXT
  119. GAMER.INI
  120.  
  121. 4) Copy GAMER.EXE, README.TXT, and GAMER.INI files into the new directory you
  122. made on your hard drive, and then go to your hard drive and the directory that
  123. you just copied those files into.
  124.  
  125. 5) Using DOS Edit, (type EDIT GAMER.INI at the DOS prompt), you will make
  126. changes to the GAMER.INI file that will allow it to have access to Duke 3D.
  127. When you open up the GAMER.INI file in Edit, you will see this:
  128.  
  129. A whole bunch of lines starting with //. Look for the line that looks like:
  130.  
  131. // End of text header
  132.  
  133. The section you will need to work with follows that line, and looks like this:
  134.  
  135. 1.0
  136. 1
  137. DUKE NUKEM 3D <version>
  138. DUKE3D<version>
  139. NONE
  140. <duke directory>

  142. Leave the first and second lines alone. Line one is the version of GAMER,
  143. and line two tells GAMER how many games you have add-ons installed for.
  144.  
  145. On the third line, change the <version> to 1.3D if your Duke Nukem 3D is
  146. version 1.3D (the original before the Plutonium Pack was created) or ATOMIC
  147. if you have the Plutonium Pack/Atomic edition of Duke (versions 1.4 and 1.5).
  148. Be sure you type exactly 1.3D or ATOMIC... in all caps.
  149.  
  150. Example: Change DUKE NUKEM 3D <version> to DUKE NUKEM 3D ATOMIC
  151.  
  152. On the 4th line, change the <version> to 1.3D for Duke version 1.3D, or PP
  153. if you have the Plutonium Pack.
  154.  
  155. Example: Change DUKE3D<version> to DUKE3DPP
  156.  
  157. Leave the 5th line alone... this denotes what add-on is currently installed
  158. for that game.
  159.  
  160. On the 6th line, change <duke directory> to the directory path where you have
  161. Duke Nukem 3D installed. Be sure to put the drive letter, and a final \ when
  162. typing the directory.
  163.  
  164. Example: C:\GAMES\DUKE3D\
  165.  
  166. Although it doesn't _have_ to be in all caps, it is advisable.
  167.  
  168. 6) Save GAMER.INI and exit DOS Edit. 
  169.  
  170. 7) Now, you need to make a new directory to put your new Duke Nukem 3D add-on
  171. packs into. If you have version 1.3D of Duke, then make a directory named
  172. DUKE3D13. If you have Atomic Edition/Plutonium Pack (version 1.4 or 1.5)
  173. then make a directory named DUKE3DPP. Please note, these should be 
  174. subdirectories of your GAMER directory. So, the structure of the directory
  175. would be, for example, something similar to:
  176.  
  177. C:\GAMER\DUKE3DPP
  178. or
  179. C:\GAMER\DUKE3D13
  180.  
  181. 8) Move on to the section titled "INSTALLING `Duke It Out In D.C.' 
  182. FOR GAMER".
  183.

  186.  IF A VERSION OF GAMER IS ALREADY INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER
  187. *************************************************************

  189. 1) Go into your GAMER directory, and open up the GAMER.INI file in DOS Edit
  190. (type EDIT GAMER.INI at the DOS prompt). Now, look for some text similar
  191. to this:
  192.  
  193. DUKE NUKEM 3D <version>
  194. DUKE3D<version>
  195. NONE
  196. <duke directory>
  197.  
  198. If it doesn't exist, then you will need to make modifications. If it does
  199. exist, then there is nothing you will need to change. Skip these next few
  200. steps and move on to the section titled "INSTALLING `Duke It Out In D.C.' 
  201. FOR GAMER".
  202.  
  203. 2) On the second line, you should see a number. Just add one to this number,
  204. and change it.
  205.  
  206. Example: Change 4 to 5
  207.  
  208. 3) Now, you need to insert this text on the line after the one you just
  209. modified.
  210.  
  211. DUKE NUKEM 3D <version>
  212. DUKE3D<version>
  213. NONE
  214. <duke directory>

  216. On the first line, change the <version> to 1.3D if your Duke Nukem 3D is
  217. version 1.3D (the original before the Plutonium Pack was created) or ATOMIC

  229. for that game.

  231. On the 4th line, change <duke directory> to the directory path where you have
  232. Duke Nukem 3D installed. Be sure to put the drive letter, and a final \ when

  248. If not, please go back and double check that you did every step as instructed.
  249. Since this is version 1.0 of the GAMER software, you don't need to worry
  250. about updating that. Aren't you lucky! ;^)

  252. 4) Save the GAMER.INI file, and exit DOS Edit.
  253.  
  254. 5) Now, you need to make a new directory to put your new Duke Nukem 3D add-on
  255. packs into. If you have version 1.3D of Duke, then make a directory named
  256. DUKE3D13. If you have Atomic Edition/Plutonium Pack (version 1.4 or 1.5)
  257. then make a directory named DUKE3DPP. Please note, these should be 
  258. subdirectories of your GAMER directory. So, the structure of the directory
  259. would be, for example, something similar to:
  260.  
  261. C:\GAMER\DUKE3DPP
  262. or
  263. C:\GAMER\DUKE3D13
  264.  
  265. 6) Move on to the section titled "INSTALLING `Duke It Out In D.C.' 
  266. FOR GAMER".

  269.  INSTALLING `Duke It Out In D.C.' FOR GAMER
  270. ********************************************

  272. 1) This assumes that you have already installed the GAMER software, and that
  273. that portion of the installation is correct. Now, go into the `Duke It Out In
  274. D.C.' CD, and into the DUKEDC directory. You should see two .SSI files named:
  275.  
  276. DUKEDC13.SSI and DUKEDCPP.SSI
  277.  
  278. If you have Duke Nukem 3D version 1.3D, then the file you will work with is
  279. DUKEDC13.SSi. If you have Duke Nukem 3D Atomic edition (1.4,1.5) then you will
  280. be working with DUKEDCPP.SSI. Please remember that, as I will only refer to
  281. them as "your SSI file".
  282.  
  283. 2) Now, this part is _really_ easy. Simply copy your SSI file into the
  284. directory where your Duke Nukem 3D SSI files are stored for GAMER to access.
  285. So, say your GAMER software is located in C:\GAMER, then you would copy your
  286. SSI file into:
  287.  
  288. C:\GAMER\DUKE3D13 if you have Duke Nukem 3D version 1.3d
  289. or
  290. C:\GAMER\DUKE3DPP if you have the Atomic Edition/Plutonium Pack (1.4 and 1.5)
  291.  
  292. 3) GAMER will automatically detect the new add-on and display it in the
  293. activation menu screen.
  294.  
  295. Well... that's it! Now this is a perfect example of why we write programs to
  296. install things for us. ;^)

  299. Problems, fixes, workarounds
  300. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  301.  
  302. If you experience any problems installing `Duke It Out In D.C.', read below
  303. for possible solutions and workarounds.
  304.  
  305. -Q I can't get the installer to recognize my Duke Nukem 3D directory! What
  306.    do I do now?
  307.  
  308. -A First, make sure that Duke Nukem 3D is currently INSTALLED on your
  309.    computer. Secondly, the installer looks for a .CFG file to verify the
  310.    existence of Duke on your computer, and to detect which version of Duke you
  311.    have. Since you cannot run Duke without a .CFG file, the installer assumes 
  312.    you will have one.
  313.  
  314. -Q I can't get the installer to recognize my GAMER directory! What do I do?
  315.  
  316. -A The installer looks for a file name GAMER.INI to verify the existence
  317.    of the GAMER software. You can't run the GAMER software without it, so
  318.    just make sure it is in the directory when installing. If you still cannot
  319.    get it to work, you will most likely need to install it in a new place.
  320.  
  321. -Q I keep trying to make a directory to install the GAMER software into,
  322.    but the installer won't accept it. Why?
  323.  
  324.    -or-
  325.  
  326.    I can't type enough characters for the directory I want to install the
  327.    GAMER software into. How do I fix this?
  328.  
  329. -A First of all, the maximum number of characters the installer allows you
  330.    to type is 60. The Duke Nukem 3D installer did this, as do many other
  331.    installers. If you really need more characters, then read the section
  332.    below on manually installing the GAMER Software.
  333.    Secondly, the installer only allows you to create one new subdirectory
  334.    from the one you are installing. So, in other words... if you have a
  335.    directory called C:\GAMES
  336.  
  337.    This is an example of a valid directory to install to:
  338.    C:\GAMES\GAMER
  339.  
  340.    This is an example of an invalid directory to install to:
  341.    C:\GAMES\ADDONS\GAMER
  342.  
  343.    Unless of course, you already have a directory called ADDONS as a
  344.    subdirectory of GAMES.
  345.  
  346. -Q I've done all this stuff, and I still can't get the dang thing to install
  347.    correctly. Can I manually install the add-on?
  348.  
  349. -A Yes, you can manually install it, but will take a little bit of work on
  350.    your part. Please read the section above about installing should the
  351.    install program fail.
  352.
