  8. This is the freeware version of Eudora for Windows. 
  9. There is also a commercial version of Eudora called 
  10. Eudora Pro.  If you would like information about 
  11. the commercial version, a brief description is 
  12. provided in the "About Eudora Pro" menu in this
  13. freeware.

  30. Minimum Requirements
  31. ---------------------

  33. To use Eudora Pro for Windows V3.0.1, you 
  34. must have the following:
  35.  
  36. *    IBM-compatible PC.
  37. *    For 16-bit Eudora: Windows 3.1, 3.11, 
  38.      or Workgroups
  39.      For 32-bit Eudora: Windows 95, NT 3.51,  
  40.      or NT 4.0
  41. *    Winsock 1.1 API compliant networking  
  42.      package (not needed for serial connection)
  43. *    A mail account with an ISP (Internet  
  44.      Service Provider) or an Internet-style  
  45.      network, providing an SMTP service and  
  46.      a POP3 service.
  47. *    Access to your mail account via a  
  48.      modem (9600bps or higher recommended)  
  49.      or Internet-style network connection.

  54. Installation
  55. ------------

  57. To install Eudora, follow these directions:
  58.  
  59. 1.   Exit any applications you are running.
  60.  
  61. 2.   If you are installing from a software archive,
  62.      double-click on it to start the Setup program.
  63.  
  64.      If you are installing from diskette, insert the
  65.      Eudora Pro diskette 1 into drive A: of your PC.
  66.      Then select Run... from the Start menu, enter
  67.      A:Setup.exe, and click OK.
  68.  
  69. 3.   Read the Welcome screen, then click Next.
  70.      The Software License Agreement is displayed.
  71.  
  72. 4.   Read the Software License Agreement and click Next
  73.      (you can also save or print the Agreement).
  74.  
  75. 5.   Specify a directory to install Eudora, then
  76.      click Next.
  77.  
  78.      To upgrade an older version of Eudora Light, 
  79.      select your current Eudora directory. All of your 
  80.      messages, mailboxes, folders, and options will 
  81.      be maintained.
  82.  
  83. 6.   Select the version of the software that you want
  84.      to install, 16- or 32-bit. Based on the operating
  85.      system and connectivity software that you are
  86.      running, the Setup program recommends an appropriate
  87.      version.
  88.  
  89. 7.   Verify that the displayed settings are correct,
  90.      then click Next (or use the Back button if you need
  91.      to go back and make changes).
  92.  
  93. 8.   If you are installing from diskette, you are
  94.      prompted to insert additional diskettes into drive A.
  95.  
  96. 9.  Eudora is installed in the destination directory,
  97.     and you are prompted for whether or not you want
  98.     to view the README file. Click Yes.
  99.  
  100. Note:   Always keep the Help file in the same directory 
  101.         as the executable.

  105. Configuration
  106. -------------
  107.  
  108. The first time you run Eudora you will 
  109. have to edit some of the configuration 
  110. information in order to be able to send 
  111. and receive mail.
  112.  
  113. Select Options... from the Tools Menu.
  114.  
  115. The fields you need to review are:
  116.  
  117. POP Account:  To use Eudora, you must have 
  118. an account on a computer that runs a POP3 
  119. server.  This is the account to which your 
  120. e-mail messages are delivered before they 
  121. are transferred to the Eudora program on 
  122. your PC.  In this field, type your login 
  123. name for this account, an "@" sign, and 
  124. the full (domain) name of the computer.  
  125. For example, if your assigned login name
  126. is "carolyn," and the name of the computer 
  127. where you receive e-mail is "uxh.cso.uiuc.edu," 
  128. type "carolyn@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu" in this field.
  129.  
  130. Real Name:  Type your real name.  Your name, 
  131. as it appears here, is displayed in parentheses 
  132. after your return address in your outgoing mail.
  133. It is also displayed in the sender column of 
  134. all messages you send.
  135.  
  136. SMTP Server:  To send mail, a computer with 
  137. an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) 
  138. server program is necessary.  You need not 
  139. have a login to this computer, but you must 
  140. have access to it through your network.  
  141. If the computer on which you have your POP 
  142. account is also an SMTP server, leave this 
  143. field blank.  Otherwise, specify the name 
  144. of the computer you want to use as your 
  145. SMTP server.
  146.  
  147. Return Address:  Normally, Eudora uses 
  148. your POP account as your return address.  
  149. If you wish to use a return address 
  150. other than your POP account, enter it here.
  151.

  153. If you have the New Mail Notification 
  154. "Sound" switch on, then when new mail
  155. arrives, you will hear a notification 
  156. sound.  In order for this to work, your 
  157. system must have a properly configured 
  158. sound board, or you must have installed 
  159. the Sound Driver for PC-Speaker (anonymous  
  160. ftp from ftp.eudora.com the file 
  161. /quest/windows/utils/SPEAK.EXE).  
  162. Eudora has a built-in sound, but if you 
  163. wish to supply your own, it must be in .WAV
  164. format.  To change the default new mail 
  165. sound, select Options... from the Special 
  166. menu, and then select the Getting Attention 
  167. category. Select the button under the 
  168. "Play a sound" checkbox, and a dialog  
  169. will prompt you for the sound file.
  170.  
  171. Note that this driver will only work for 
  172. the Windows 3.X operating system.
  173. It will not work for Windows NT or Windows 95.
  174.  
  175. If the mail you are sending is bouncing 
  176. back to you saying that the message
  177. does not have a Date: header, add the 
  178. following entry to your EUDORA.INI
  179. file:
  180.

  182. TimeZone=xxxnnnyyy
  183.  
  184. where xxx, yyy are timezone abbreviations 
  185. like PST, PDT, CDT, and nnn is the offset 
  186. in hours WEST of GMT (i.e., those that 
  187. are east of GMT should enter a negative 
  188. number here).  xxx is the timezone during 
  189. Standard Time and yyy is the timezone 
  190. during Daylight Savings Time.  If you 
  191. do not change your clocks during Daylight 
  192. Savings Time, leave yyy blank.

  199. If you don't specify a TimeZone entry, 
  200. then a Date: header will not be put
  201. in outgoing messages, which is fine for 
  202. most users because their mail server 
  203. will insert the correct Date: header.  
  204. The moral is - if you don't get messages 
  205. bounced because of a missing Date: 
  206. header, then leave the TimeZone entry alone.

  210. TCP/IP Services
  211. ---------------

  213. Eudora makes use of several different 
  214. TCP/IP services, and has default port
  215. numbers for these services.  Most sites 
  216. put these services on the default ports, 
  217. but some may not.  Contact your site 
  218. network administrator to make sure that 
  219. the following services listed below are 
  220. indeed on the default port numbers.  
  221. If they aren't, you'll have to make 
  222. some changes to some configuration 
  223. file(s) in your TCP/IP package 
  224. (usually to a SERVICES file).
  225.  
  226. Below are a list of the services which 
  227. Eudora uses, and what they might look 
  228. like in a typical services file.  The 
  229. names of these services must be exactly 
  230. as named here (e.g., the entry for the 
  231. POP3 service must be "pop3" and not 
  232. "pop-3").  Make sure that you make 
  233. any changes necessary for your TCP/IP 
  234. package to specify the location of the 
  235. SERVICES file.

  243. To use Ph (if your site has a Ph server):

  249. To use the Change Password... function in 
  250. Eudora, your site must have a password 
  251. changing server installed.  See the 
  252. directory quest/unix/servers/password on 
  253. ftp.eudora.com for examples of password
  254. changing servers):

  257. There are also entries in the [Settings] 
  258. section of the EUDORA.INI file for default 
  259. port numbers of services.  These are provided 
  260. for setups in which the SERVICES file cannot 
  261. be modified.  Do not use these entries
  262. unless the services are not on default port 
  263. numbers and you cannot modify them in your 
  264. TCP/IP package.  Here are sample INI entries:
