  7. Apple's QuickTime plug-in lets you view QuickTime movies and QuickTime
  8. VR Panoramas and Objects directly in your browser window. This read-me
  9. describes what you will need and how to use the Windows version of
  10. Apple's QuickTime plug-ins for the Internet. If you are a Macintosh
  11. user, please see the Macintosh read-me.

  13. ATTENTION Netscape Navigator Users: This version of the QuickTime
  14. plug-in is newer than the 1.0 version shipping with Netscape Navigator
  15. 3.0. Check out the new features listed below!

  25. Installing the QuickTime Plug-in
  26. ---------------------------------
  27. To take full advantage of the QuickTime plug-in, you will need to
  28. install QuickTime for Windows 2.1.2, the plug-in (and optionally the
  29. QuickTime VR software), and configure your browser to use the plug-in.
  30. Here are the details of what you will need and how to configure it.

  32. What you need
  33. -------------
  34. * A 386, 486, or 586/Pentium PC running Windows 95/NT
  35. * Memory as required by your operating system
  36. * A plug-in compatible browser - Netscape 2.x, 3.x or Internet Explorer
  37. 3.01 for Windows '95/NT.
  38. * QuickTime 2.1.2 for Windows
  39. * Version 1.1 of the Apple QuickTime Plug-in for the Internet
  40. * Version 1.0.3 or later of the QuickTime VR (Virtual Reality) for
  41. Windows software (QTVRW32.QTC).

  44. Installing QuickTime 2.1.2 and the plugin-software
  45. --------------------------------------------------
  46. Please make sure you have QuickTime 2.1.2.xx. Here's how to determine
  47. which version of QuickTime you have:
  48.  
  49. Open your Control Panels folder (accessible from the "Start:Settings"
  50. popup) and double-click on the "QuickTime 32" control panel. The version
  51. number will be displayed in the control panel window. If you have a file
  52. named "QuickTime" in your control panels folder, this indicates that you
  53. have the 16-bit version of QuickTime. If you are running a 32-bit
  54. browser, you will need the 32-bit version of QuickTime. It is possible
  55. you may have both versions of the QuickTime software installed if you
  56. are running mixture of 16- and 32-bit applications.
  57.  
  58. If you do not have QuickTime for Windows 2.1.2, you can obtain it from
  59. the QuickTime software page (http://quicktime.apple.com/sw/sw.html). We
  60. recommend you select "Easy Download" to download all the files you will
  61. need, including the plugin and QuickTime Virtual Reality. Here's how to
  62. install the software:

  64. "Easy Download" will download QTEASY32.EXE. This file will automatically
  65. expand, placing the files QT32INST.EXE, NPQTW32.DLL and QTVRW32.QTC on
  66. your desktop. NOTE: If you are running a 16-bit browser, download the
  67. Windows 3.1 version of QuickTime instead.
  68.  
  69. Run QT32INST.EXE to install QuickTime for Windows on your machine. If
  70. you have older versions of QuickTime files, the installer will ask if
  71. you want to delete them. Please respond "yes" to any such queries.
  72.  
  73. If you already had QuickTime installed, you can download the plugin
  74. (NPQTW32.DLL) and the QuickTime VR Software (QTVRW32.QTC) separately.
  75. Regardless of whether you download them with the "Easy Download" or
  76. individially, you must move these files to the proper locations:

  78. Move the file QTVRW32.QTC in the WINDOWS directory of your primary
  79. drive. Note: if you have multiple operating systems installed, place the
  80. QTVRW32.QTC file in the Windows folder for Windows '95 or NT.

  82. Move NPQTW32.DLL to the "Plugins" directory in your browser folder. Make
  83. sure you do NOT have a file called NPQTW16.DLL (the 16-bit version of
  84. the plug-in) in your plugins folder.

  89. New Features in Version 1.1

  91. * Expanded Browser Support:  Netscape 3.x and Internet Explorer 3.x

  93. * QTVR Hot Spots - allows you to click on "hot spots" in a QTVR movie to
  94. jump to a new page.

  96. * Webmaster control over default playback volume for movies.

  98. * "Scaled" movies - movies can play back at different sizes

  100. * "Cached" movies (Netscape 3.0 users only) - movies you have recently
  101. viewed can be cached just like other documents so they don't need to
  102. re-load when you return to them.

  108. Q  Why should I install the QuickTime plug-in?
  109.  
  110. A  Apple's QuickTime plug-in for the Internet lets you experience
  111. QuickTime content directly in the browser window. You no longer need a
  112. "helper application" like MoviePlayer to view QuickTime content over the
  113. internet. You can also view QuickTime VR (Virtual Reality) Panoramas and
  114. Objects right in your browser, after downloading the QuickTime VR
  115. software from Apple.
  116.  
  117. The QuickTime plug-in works with existing QuickTime movies, and with
  118. movies prepared to take advantage of the plug-in's "fast-start" feature.
  119. The fast-start feature will present the first frame of the movie almost
  120. immediately and can begin playing even before the movie has been
  121. completely downloaded.

  123. Your browser can use the QuickTime plug-in automatically to play any
  124. QuickTime movie while browsing the Internet. Just download the plug-in
  125. to your computer, move it to your browsers' plug-in folder, and
  126. re-launch your browser! The plug-in can play many kinds of QuickTime
  127. movies (.MOV files) including movies with text, MIDI, and other kinds of
  128. data. If you have downloaded and installed the QuickTime VR component,
  129. it will also let you interact with QuickTime VR Panoramas and Objects.

  132. Q  I'm using Internet Explorer and have followed the installation
  133. instructions above, but when I get to a page where a movie is supposed
  134. to be, the movie does not appear. There is no warning or error message -
  135. it just seems to ignore the movie.
  136.  
  137. A  You are probably using Internet Explorer 2.1 for Windows 3.1, which
  138. does not support plugins. You should upgrade to Internet Explorer 3.0
  139. for Windows '95/NT.

  142. Q  When I get to a page where a movie is supposed to be, I get an error
  143. message: "This page uses a plugin which does not seem to be
  144. installed..."
  145.  
  146. A  Check to see that NPQTW16.DLL is in the plugins folder for your
  147. browser. If you have just placed the NPQTW16.DLL there, you need to quit
  148. and re-start your browser for it to be recognized.
  149.  
  150. It's also possible that you may need to configure your browser to tell
  151. it to use the plugin. Please refer to the Browser Configuration document
  152. on the web at http://quicktime.apple.com/sw/browserconfig.html for more
  153. information.

  156. Q  I downloaded the QuickTime VR software (QTVRW32.QTC), installed it in
  157. my WINDOWS directory, and rebooted. But when I run Navigator with the
  158. QuickTime VR component, I can't view QuickTime VR Panoramas and Objects.

  160. A  You need the latest version (1.0.3) of the QTVR software in your
  161. WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.. If you are running a 16-bit
  162. (Windows 3.1) browser, you should download the 16-bit version of the
  163. QuickTime VR component (QTVRW.QTC).

  165. Q  Is there any special configuration or set-up I need to do depending on
  166. which browser I am using?
  167.  
  168. A  Yes; different browsers require different set-up. See the Browser
  169. Configuration document on the web at http://quicktime.apple.com/sw/

  173. Q  When I tried to use the plugin to view a movie, a dialog box appears
  174. complaining that "SHARE" is not loaded. What do I need to do?
  175.  
  176. A  To make SHARE.EXE load at boot time, edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT startup
  177. file and look for the statement "C:/DOS/SHARE.EXE" (or simply "SHARE").
  178. Add it if it is not there. If is there, but there is a semicolon (";")
  179. or the word "REM" at the beginning of the line, delete the semicolon or
  180. "REM". Save your changes and re-start your computer.

  183. Q  I am using a Web browser other than the ones listed above and I am
  184. experiencing problems with the QuickTime plug-in.
  185.  
  186. A  In this release the QuickTime for Windows plug-in only supports
  187. Netscape Navigator 3.x for Windows and Internet Explorer 3.x for Windows
  188. '95/NT.
  189.

  191. Q  I understand that the Macintosh version of the plug-in supports MPEG.
  192. Why doesn't the PC version support MPEG and how do I download MPEG files
  193. to disk.
  194.  
  195. A  MPEG support will be added to QuickTime for Windows at a later date.
  196. Meanwhile, there is a variety of third-party software and hardware for
  197. MPEG playback. You may want to consult the MPEG Frequently Asked
  198. Questions Document on the MPEG archive site to find a solution that
  199. meets your needs.

  202. Q  How do I save a QuickTime movie from a Web page to my hard-drive?
  203.  
  204. A  Just click and hold the right-hand mouse button down over the movie. A
  205. popup will appear that lets you save the movie.

  208. Q  I design web pages and would like to know more about movie controls
  209. and other capabilities of the QuickTime plug-in. Where should I look for
  210. documentation?

  212. A  Please check the QuickTime Webmaster's Page on the web at

  217. Q I am browsing a page with a QuickTime VR panorama and expect that I
  218. can use the shift and control keys to zoom in/zoom out of the movie. 
  219. But the movies don't seem to respond to keystrokes as they do when I
  220. play them in the Movie Player.

  222. A  To enable zooming in and out, you need to select the QuickTime VR
  223. panaroma or QuickTime movie first by moving the cursor inside the movie.

  226. Q QuickTime just doesn't seem to be working on my system. Where can I go
  227. to read about other installation issues and troubleshooting techniques?
