  6. Thank you for using System Information for Windows 95. This version 
  7. of System Information is designed to run only under Windows 95. This 
  8. version is not compatible with Windows NT, Windows 3.x, Windows for 
  9. OS/2, or Windows emulators such as SoftWindows.

  11. Please review this document in its entirety prior to installing 
  12. System Information as it contains late-breaking information that the 
  13. online help does not contain.

  27. NOTE: DO NOT install System Information to a folder with a name longer 
  28. than 40 characters. The DOS-based Norton Utilities programs will not run 
  29. properly.

  31. Microsoft Office 95's FindFast feature may cause problems with Setup 
  32. Wizard. Installing Norton Utilities while FindFast is running causes 
  33. Setup Wizard dialog-box placement problems (dialog boxes may also appear 
  34. off the screen) and conflict with its initial Windows 95 restart 
  35. procedure. If you experience these problems (or if you are reading this 
  36. prior to installation), you should remove it temporarily from your 
  37. StartUp folder.

  39. If you receive the message "Setup has detected an incomplete 
  40. installation," run the file ~SYMSHEL.EXE from the windows directory to 
  41. clean up the left over files. This problem may occur when something 
  42. interferes with the Windows RunOnce handling.

  46. 2.0 System Information
  47. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  48. The Total Windows Memory value (located below the pie chart in System 
  49. Information's Memory tab) is calculated by adding together the following 
  50. numbers:
  51.       total physical memory
  52.     + total current swap file size 
  53.     + total current free space on disk
  54.     + total size of all currently loaded 32-bit applications
  55. The last item is included in the total calculation because 32-bit 
  56. applications under Windows 95 are "swapped out" by flushing them from 
  57. memory, and then re-loading from the original disk image when they need 
  58. to be "swapped in."

  60. System Information will report the bus type for "hybrid bus" systems as 
  61. follows:
  62.     VL/ISA is reported as ISA
  63.     VL/EISA is reported as EISA
  64.     PCI/ISA is reported as PCI
  65.     PCI/EISA is reported as PCI
  66. =========================
  67. It may take System Information an extended amount of time to gather 
  68. information about network resources on large networks.
  69. =========================
  70. Printing a report while using some versions of Adobe Type Manager (ATM) 
  71. may cause the reversed text headings to print incorrectly.
  72. =========================
  73. The Multimedia tab cannot gather information about the "cdaudio" MCI 
  74. device while an audio CD is playing. System Information displays "Can 
  75. not gather additional info" when this occurs.
  76. =========================
  77. For network, CD, and compressed drives, the Disk Usage Selection on the 
  78. Drive Tab is the total size of all selected items as reported by the 
  79. file system. This does not include "slack" space (wasted space because 
  80. of the device's cluster size), so the total amount allocated will often 
  81. be slightly more than the size displayed by System Information.
  82. =========================
  83. If the Windows 95 Device Manager shows an improperly configured device 
  84. (represented by a yellow "!" symbol), System Information may be unable 
  85. to display the correct information for this device. Also note that Plug 
  86. & Play devices that are disconnected may be reported by the Windows 95 
  87. Device Manager as configured. System Information will likely display a 
  88. disconnected Plug & Play device as configured and active.
  89. =========================
  90. System Information will identify a NexGen 586 computer as having a 386-
  91. based processor. The NexGen processor uses a 386 instruction set.
  92. =========================
  93. To learn more about benchmarking your computer, click Information from 
  94. the System Benchmark window. Please note the following:
  95.  
  96. -    CMOS settings can be used to enable/disable the L1 and/or L2
  97.     cache. If the CPU seems slower than it should, verify the cache 
  98.     settings.
  99. -    Some variation in the benchmark results is normal. System  
  100.     Information is designed to exclude common outside factors, such 
  101.     as most hardware interrupts, running applications, disk swapping, 
  102.     etc. However, some low level system events cannot be completely 
  103.     factored out. These events may cause minor variations in benchmark 
  104.     results.
  105. -    Although your computer may be the same CPU and MHz speed as other 
  106.     computers, it does not mean that it will produce the same 
  107.     benchmark results. Various other factors, such as the type and 
  108.     speed of the system bus and memory, and the amount and 
  109.     architecture of the memory cache, are accounted for and will 
  110.     affect the speed of your computer and the results of the 
  111.     benchmark.

  113. The option for physical benchmarking is disabled on CD-ROM drives. To 
  114. obtain similar results, manually set the supplemental cache size to 
  115. small and the access pattern to no read ahead for that drive before 
  116. running the logical benchmark.
  117. =========================
  118. When running the drive benchmark while using the Promise DC4030-VL2 EIDE 
  119. disk controller the system may hang. See the troubleshooting section of 
  120. the controller's user manual for possible solutions, such as using only 
  121. one VESA card in the system.

  123. While running Scandisk, you may experience an invalid page fault when 
  124. you click the Details button on the Internet Tab of System Information.
