PC GAMER MARCH 1998 CD README FILE
It's another fun-filled demo CD this month, with tons of great gaming for your pleasure.
You might notice that there are fewer demos on this CD than normal. Blame that on the
game manufacturers -- their demos keep getting bigger and bigger, which means fewer and
fewer demos can fit in the 650 megs that we have! Don't worry, though -- we'll try to
arrange it so we can bring you the bigger demos that are too large to download, yet not so
big that there's only a couple demos on each CD.
Be sure to check out some of the awesome add-ons we have for Quake this month on The CD.
The guys at Stomped! really outdid themselves when they culled these additions. Also, some
stuff they pointed us to we couldn't distribute because of copyrights, but you should
definitely go to www.planetquake.com/blah and check out Blahbalicious, a Quake movie that
will have you rolling in your seat.
Some things to watch for while using The CD this month:
INCUBATION LEVELS
You must have the full version of Blue Byte's Incubation to play these additional levels.
There are also patches to update your game to the latest version.
FRONT END STUFF
With some of the install programs that run through the front end, a window will pop up
behind the front-end graphics. You might not see it if you don't either minimize or close
the front end. If you try installing the demo while the installation program is already
running, you might get some errors.
We always recommend that if you use the front end to install the demos, make sure you exit
out from it before you actually run them. Sometimes demos will conflict with the front end,
making the demo do weird things. In extreme situations, we put a warning in the front end
itself, but it's a good rule of thumb to use the front end to install the demos, then close
it to run them.
GENERAL CD STUFF
We've gotten quite a few reports of high-speed CD-ROM drives having difficulty reading our
CDs. We're not sure why yet, but we're working on it. Until then, the best thing we can
suggest is to make sure you have the latest drivers possible for your CD-ROM drive. If that
doesn't work, try getting a replacement CD from "subscribe@pcgamer.com"
If you have a Toshiba drive, we've encountered a strange error that sometimes says "Cannot
find requested sector." If you encounter this, open the CD-ROM drive door, and then close it
again with the CD in the the drive. Eventually, the drive heads will get aligned correctly
and you'll be able to read The CD. The best way to see if this works is to keep inserting
The CD until the icon under "My Computer" changes to the PC Gamer icon and the Autorun
splash screen loads.
TECHNICAL SUPPORT
If you have any difficulties with any of the demos on The CD, please contact the
manufacturer of the demo. The technical support numbers for each publisher are listed on The
CD, as well as in the Disc Pages. These demos are culled from a variety of independent
sources, and we provide them "as is." We can't even guarantee that every demo will run on
your system. If you have problems, contact the manufacturers -- they know more about their
product than we do.
However, if you're having problems with the front end itself, (like video not playing, or
lack of sound), you can send in a report by going to our support site at
http://support.imaginemedia.com. Fill out the form, and we'll try to get a response to you
as soon as possible. For Customer Service inquiries, like renewing a subscription or
getting back issues, you can write or call the numbers listed below:
