  1. Microsoft(r) Flight Simulator(tm) Setup Patch Instructions

  5. What This Patch Is For:
  6. =======================
  7. An error has been identified in the setup program for Microsoft Flight 
  8. Simulator 98. This error results in an erroneous message being generated by 
  9. SETUP.EXE to the effect that 4096MB of free space is required on your C: 
  10. drive in order to properly set up the application.  In reality, nowhere 
  11. near this much space is actually required.

  13. This error occurs most commonly on hard drives which are partitioned,
  14. compressed, or larger than 2GB total.
  15.  
  16. If you have experienced this problem and are not able to successfully setup
  17. Microsoft Flight Simulator, this patch should alleviate your problem.

  19. This package also contains an update to the DirectPlay system components. If
  20. you are experiencing difficulties with the Multiplayer options in Flight
  21. Simulator 98, or are having difficulties with the Zone connections, this
  22. patch may also help you.

  25. Using the corrected SETUP:
  26. ==========================
  27. 1. Place the extracted files SETUP.EXE, SETUPENU.DLL and DPLAY50A.EXE
  28. in any convenient location on your hard drive which does not already 
  29. contain a file named SETUP.EXE, such as the Windows desktop. Normally,
  30. the self-extraction tool places these files on your Windows desktop.
  31. If your Windows directory is something other than "C:\WINDOWS", then you
  32. will find the extracted files in C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP

  34. 2. Place your original Flight Simulator 98 CD in your CD-ROM drive. If
  35. the setup application begins automatically, CHOOSE THE "Exit" BUTTON.
  36. (This is the original flawed setup.)

  38. 3. Using the "Run..." command on the Windows 95 Start Menu, enter the 
  39. following command line:

  41. C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\SETUP /PATCH:<your cd-rom drive letter>
  42.  
  43. For example, if your Flight Simulator 98 CD-ROM is in drive F:, you
  44. would enter:

  46. C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\SETUP /PATCH:F:
  47.  
  48. Note: If you extracted SETUP.EXE to a location other than
  49. C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP, replace "C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP" with the path to the 
  50. appropriate location.

  52. 4. At this point, SETUP should run correctly and will copy the necessary 
  53. files from your original CD-ROM.  Once setup completes successfully, you may 
  54. remove the patched files from your hard drive, although we recommend 
  55. retaining it in a safe location in the event that you need to re-setup 
  56. Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 again at some point in the future.

  58. 5. If you still encounter any sort of problem with incorrect disk space 
  59. calculations, Setup can also be run with a "/FORCE" flag in addition to 
  60. the "/PATCH:" flag listed in step 3, to force setup to ignore drive space 
  61. requirements. Note that if you do not have enough space for the setup 
  62. options you select, this will result in an incomplete and aborted install.

  64. 6.  To install the DirectPlay 5.0a components, simply double 
  65. click on the DPLAY50A.EXE file.
