  5. This Read Me file contains answers to frequently asked questions
  6. about installing and running YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television.

  8.  
  9. Installing YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television
  10. =============================
  11. Before installing YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television, disable all
  12. anti-virus software and any TSRs on your computer. To disable
  13. your anti-virus software, consult the documentation that came
  14. with your anti-virus software.
  15.  
  16. If you interrupt the Installer application during the
  17. installation process, it may leave some files on your hard disk.
  18. To restart the installation process, please remove these files
  19. and run the installer again.
  20.

  22. WINDOWS COMPATIBILITY
  23. =============================
  24. YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television can be played on any 486- or 
  25. 586-based PC running Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. 
  26.  
  27. If you are using the Virtual Memory feature in Windows 95 and you
  28. are running very low on free disk space, you may experience "Out
  29. of Memory" errors in YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television. Check your 
  30. Virtual Memory settings, free some hard disk space and then restart
  31. YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television. 
  32.  
  33. If you run SHARE, please disable it before you try to uninstall
  34. YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television. You can disable it by commenting 
  35. out the SHARE line from your autoexec.bat file. You can re-enable 
  36. SHARE as soon as YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television has been removed 
  37. from your PC.

  40. YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television Performance
  41. =============================================
  42. YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television performs best when your video 
  43. display is set to 256 colors. Some PC hardware may not be fast 
  44. enough to play the game well in higher color video modes.
  45.  
  46. If you experience sound or video performance problems with YOU 
  47. DON'T KNOW JACK Television, please make sure that neither Microsoft 
  48. Office Toolbar nor the Norton Navigator Task Bar (or any 
  49. similar utility) is running when you run YOU DON'T KNOW JACK 
  50. Television. These utilities can negatively affect the performance 
  51. of many games.
  52.  
  53. Tip: You can temporarily disable most Windows utilities by 
  54. holding down the Shift key while Windows is loading. These 
  55. utilities will launch normally the next time you restart Windows. 
  56.  
  57. If you still experience sound stuttering, make sure that you have
  58. installed the latest drivers for your sound card. Contact the
  59. manufacturer of your sound card for more information on the
  60. availability of driver updates. Updates can usually be downloaded
  61. for free from the World Wide Web or from your manufacturer's own
  62. electronic bulletin board.

  65. Fine-Tuning the YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television Sound System
  66. ======================================================
  67. The YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television sound system can be fine-tuned 
  68. in Windows 95. If you experience problems after trying the 
  69. above tips, use the following instructions to tune the YOU DON'T 
  70. KNOW JACK Television sound system:
  71.  
  72. 1. Open the file YDKJ.INI in the 'Stuff' folder. The 'Stuff' 
  73. folder can be found in the directory where you installed YOU 
  74. DON'T KNOW JACK Television. Simply double-clicking the file should 
  75. launch the Notepad editor. 
  76.  
  77. 2. In the YDKJ.INI file, find the line that reads
  78. HighPrioritySoundThread=0 and change it to
  79. HighPrioritySoundThread=1.
  80.  
  81. 3. Save YDKJ.INI and quit Notepad.
  82.  
  83. 4. Run YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television again and listen for
  84. improvements or changes in sound quality. 
  85.  
  86. If you are still experiencing problems, open YDKJ.INI again, 
  87. and continue with the following steps: 
  88.  
  89. 5. Look near the end of YDKJ.INI for the line that says
  90. ObservedSoundThreadWakeupError=<number> (where <number> is some
  91. value). 
  92.  
  93. If the number is less than 150 or greater than 600 then skip
  94. ahead to step 7.
  95.  
  96. If <number> is greater than 150 and less than 600, then find 
  97. the line that says SoundThreadWakeUpError=150 and change it to
  98. SoundThreadWakeUpError=<number> where <number> is the same value 
  99. as in the "ObservedSoundThreadWakeupError=" line. Save YDKJ.INI 
  100. and quit Notepad.
  101.  
  102. 6. Run YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television again and listen for
  103. improvements or changes in sound quality.
  104.  
  105. 7. If you are still experiencing problems, open YDKJ.INI again,
  106. as in step 1. Change the line that you changed in step 6 back 
  107. to its original setting, that is, find
  108. SoundThreadWakeUpError=<number> and change it to
  109. SoundThreadWakeUpError=150
  110.  
  111. 8. Find the line that says UseThreadedSoundMixer=1 and
  112. change it to UseThreadedSoundMixer=0. Save YDKJ.INI and quit
  113. Notepad.
  114.  
  115. 9. Run YOU DON'T KNOW JACK Television again and listen for
  116. improvements or changes in sound quality.
