  7. INSTALLATION
  8.  
  9. * This final version of the game now runs completely from the CD. There
  10.   is no installation needed.
  11. * The first time you run the game you will be asked to install
  12.   DirectX 5. If you already have this installed on your system then
  13.   feel free to select 'Cancel'.
  14. * To install DirectX at a later date, open the 'DirectX' folder on the
  15.   CD and double-clike the 'dxsetup.exe' program.

  19. SETUP PRGOGAM
  20.  
  21. * This PC version of EXCALIBUR 2555AD uses a 'Setup' program where you
  22.   can configure the game to run as well as possible on your PC.
  23. * Depending on specification of your computer, not all of the different
  24.   options will be available to you.
  25. * When the game starts for the first time it will automatically select
  26.   the best options for your PC. You should avoid changing these unless
  27.   you really want to...

  29. - 3D MODE -
  30.  
  31.   * This option allows you to select which 3D mode to run the game in.
  32.     The options are:-
  33.  
  34.     * FISH 3D 8 BIT : Suitable for all PC users.
  35.     * D3D SOFTWARE  : This will give you better quality graphics,
  36.               but will only work well on fast MMX 
  37.               processors.
  38.     * 3DFX MODE     : This provides the highest quality graphics,
  39.               but is only available to users with 3Dfx
  40.               accelerator cards.

  42. - LOGIC SPEED -
  43.  
  44.   * This option changes the Frame Rate Independence. It is designed to
  45.     allow the game to run faster on slower PCs.
  46.  
  47.     * 1 - 5 : This is the number of logical game cycles for every
  48.           graphics cycle. The higher the number, the more
  49.           jerky the game will be.
  50.     * Auto  : This mode will select the best FRI for each room you
  51.           enter. In theory it should work the best...
  52.  
  53. - ENHANCED LIGHTING -
  54.  
  55.   * This feature allows you to change the quality of the in-game
  56.     lighting by changing the sub-division on the polygons. This feature
  57.     should only really be used in high spec machines.
  58.  
  59.     * Off        : This should be used on most machines.
  60.     * Silly High : This will slow the game down dramatically, but
  61.                one day machines may be fast enough to use it...

  63. - RESOLUTION -
  64.  
  65.   * This option determines what resolution the game will run in. Not
  66.     all graphics cards will support all resolutions. As a general rule
  67.     the lower the resolution, the faster the game will run.
  68.   * In 3Dfx MODE the game will only run in 640x480.

  72. 3DFX USERS
  73.  
  74. * Excalibur 2555AD was written to use the latest version the 3Dfx API -
  75.   'Glide'. You may need to update the drivers for your card before you
  76.   can play Excalibur.
  77. * If you run the 'Setup' program and there is no 3Dfx option in the 
  78.   3D MODE section (and you have a 3Dfx card) try the following:-
  79.  
  80.     * Open the folder '3DFX' on the root of the CD.
  81.     * Inside it there is a program called 'g24rtvg.exe'.
  82.     * Double-click on this file to update your drivers.
  83.  
  84. * This program is supplied by 3Dfx Interactive and as such we accept no
  85.   liability for what might happen. It should work fine though...

  89. SCREEN SIZE
  90.  
  91. * An additional feature was added to the game at the last minute which
  92.   allows you to resize your screen in the FISH 3D & D3D SOFTWARE modes.
  93. * When you are in game, pressing F5 will shrink the screen. This will
  94.   have the advantage of allowing the game to run much faster.
  95. * Pressing F6 will enlarge the screen again.
  96. * There are a number of known problems with this feature:-
  97.  
  98.     * The Pause menu may be slightly corrupted.
  99.     * Objects in the Inventory may be shown incorrectly.

  103. ALT-TAB
  104.  
  105. * Pressing ALT-TAB during the game to switch to another program may
  106.   cause problems. Both your Energy Bar & Map may become corrupted when
  107.   you return to the game.
  108. * The best solution to this problem is not to press ALT-TAB.
