Flight Simulator Flight Shop (FSFS) Version 5.00 maintenance release.
This document contains a description and operating instructions for FSFS501,
the Flight Shop update routine.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS:
-----------------------
1. At the MS-DOS prompt create a temporary directory to copy the contents of
the maintenance release into. For example: c:\md fsfstemp. Then copy the
contents of the maintenance release into this newly created directory.
2. From the MS-DOS prompt, run the program: FSFS501, in the temporary
directory you have created. This is a self-extracting archive. All
components making up the maintenance release will now be resident in your
temporary directory; in this example: FSFSTEMP.
3. Now type the name of the patch routine, FSUPDATE. This must be run from
within your temporary directory. In this example: c:\fsfstemp\fsupdate.
4. From the menu, confirm or type the path of your Flight Simulator then
Adventure Factory directories. Make sure to include the disk drive name.
For example: Type c:\fltsim5 for your Flight Simulator directory located
on the C: drive and type c:\fltshop for Flight Simulator Flight Shop ATC
workshop directory also located on your C: drive.
5. FSFS501 will check for existence of Flight Simulator and Flight Simulator
Flight Shop at this point.
6. If FSFS is patched successfully (a message will confirm this) it will clean
up the base directory it was run from such that FSFS501.EXE and
FSUPDATE.TXT are the only files remaining. You can now run Flight
Simulator Flight Shop's features as you normally would.
FSFS501 DESCRIPTION:
--------------------
This maintenance release is a "beta" patch freely distributed for owners of
BAO's (Bruce Artwick Organization, LTD.) Flight Simulator Flight Shop Version
5.0 (FSFS). The users of this release must own FSFS prior to installing this
product. The FSFS maintenance release replaces or updates any stock .AIR
files, the ATC executable, FSFS.FSO file and SIMFSFS.FSO file to correct bugs
there. Any files updated by this maintenance release will have the old files
copied to the '*.*!*' format. For example: The existing (or the old)
FSFSADV.EXE will be copied into FSFSADV.E!E and FSFSADV.INI will be copied
into FSFSADV.I!I.
The fixes contained in this maintenance release are a direct result of
customer feedback during the first few months that FSFS was available. We
appreciate the patience of the user community during the time it took for
this maintenance release to become available.
This maintenance release has not undergone the rigorous testing that is
normally part of the process for shipping Microsoft products. However, in
the interest of expediency this maintenance release is being released as a
"beta". The user accepts this maintenance release at his or her own risk. If
adverse problems occur as a result of this maintenance release, the user is
advised to re-install his or her copy of FSFS. Please Note: no further
updates for FSFS are planned at this time.
VBDB300.DLL file - This file should be installed in the Window's system
directory (e.g. copy this file into the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory for Win'95)
from the FLTSHOP directory. During the original install process for Flight
Simulator Flight Shop this was not done properly. With this upgrade, if the
installation has not been done properly, an error message reflecting this
problem is displayed. To correct this problem the user should copy the file,
VBDB300.DLL, from their FLTSHOP directory into their WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
Product updates are described below in greater detail.
In the Aircraft simulation the following is patched:
----------------------------------------------------
* Fuel depletion with Cessna or Learjet templates for engines scaled from
baseline - Large engine's fuel burn did not scale up correctly from the
Learjet baseline. Now, non-stop flights to Hawaii that burn a relatively
small amount of fuel (in the heavies) no longer occurs.
* Fuel depletion too fast for fuel tanks larger than 8000 pounds -
Auxiliary fuel tanks that were larger than about 8000 pounds tended to
deplete unrealistically fast. This is corrected.
* Heavy aircraft "bounce" on hard landing - Users can now indulge in "Navy"
landings in their favorite Heavy aircraft and not bounce stratospherically.
* Stall horn stays on after landing - This has been
corrected.
* Gauge interaction with engine power setting - Quirky interaction
between engine gauges and power settings is corrected.
* Glider template is corrected for better performance characteristics -
General cleaning up here.
* Updated FDE default values for stock aircraft - The stock .AIR files
have been updated for better flight performance for the 747, Beech
Baron, DC3, and the F/A-18. The old .AIR files are saved to the .*!*
format.
In ATC Workshop the following is patched:
-----------------------------------------
* Magvar is not included in on-line summary or printed flight plan reports-
This is now corrected.
* Correct .PIF file to remove indicated need for 8MB of EMS required - The
.PIF file is updated to reflect the proper memory configuration, the
user's original .PIF file has been backed up in APLCPIF.BAK.
* Warning on upload says not enough resources or more memory is needed -
This warning message has been updated to reflect the need for the .PIF
file to have EMS memory required set to 0 from 8MB.
* Radar check reports all zero's when user selects voice only option -
Radar check now works properly regardless of reporting option selected
(text or voice+text).
* Commas and periods reversed in European/non-English installations of
Windows - European format is now functioning properly.
* Wind-corrected heading issued by ATC was reversed and is now corrected.
* Altitudes greater than 32767 feet are now accommodated - Artificial
altitude restrictions imposed by ATC have been removed and altitude
limitations are now a function of service ceiling.
* ATC selection of 'long' runway default value - The default length for
the 'long' runway can now be changed through the variable 'LongRwyLen' in
the FSFSADV.INI file.
* Corrected TOC and TOD calculation bug - The Top of Climb (TOC) and Top of
Descent (TOD) calculators have been updated to correct occasional
erroneous value reversal between climb rate and descent rate.
* Corrected spelling errors in two FSFSADV.INI variables - The variables
VFRAppDist and IFRAppDist are now VFRPatDist and IFRPatDist.
* Allowed for zero lat/long entries in the ATC Workshop database.
* Changed flight plan to show magnetic headings instead of true headings.
* Changed code to restrict descriptions below 256 characters - ATC
adventure descriptions are now restricted to 256 characters, descriptions
of greater length are no longer allowed and associated error messages
shouldn't be triggered.
* Changed 'dbase error 2 #3041' message to inform user of need to copy
VBDB300.DLL to windows\system directory - This error is more descriptive
of the user's problem. If this DLL is not properly found by ATC, the
user will receive a message which indicates the need for them to copy
VBDB300.DLL into their windows\system directory.
* Updated code to allow users to override default pattern altitude -
Removed artificial limitation through the introduction of the variable
'FAFAlt' found in the FSFS.INI file. This variable is incremented in
AGL not MSL. For example: FAFAlt=4000 - this sets the pattern altitude
to 4000 feet AGL, if the field elevation is 1000 feet, then the pattern is
flown at 5000 feet indicated. If the pattern altitude is set above the
cruise altitude, the cruise altitude will be raised to the pattern
altitude at about the first waypoint.
* Updated code to allow users to override default flight level - Removed
artificial limitation through the introduction of the variable
'FlightLevel' found in the FSFS.INI file. For example:
FlightLevel=24000 - This variable sets the instructed cruise altitude to
24 thousand feet MSL.
* Added bulk data import utility that allows expansion of the user's NAV
database content (for adding Europe and other areas to the default
database). This utility is called FSFSIMP.EXE. Text files describing
this utility are included in the maintenance release, FSFSIMP.TXT and
LAYOUT.TXT.
* Note: ATC adventures must be read into FSFS from the \FLTSHOP directory.
ATC workshop will not recognize these files if they are resident on
floppy.
* There are instances with adventure initialization that aircraft
automatically crash. For example: adventures that start on Catalina
Island, in certain areas of Hawaii, or the Caribbean. Due to the unique
nature of the scenery in these areas, Flight Simulator can not prevent
this from occurring. The only solution is to update the database to
reflect the proper altitude of these locations.
In Aircraft Factory, the following is patched:
----------------------------------------------
No patches created for this portion of the product.
In the Adventure Programming Language Compiler, the following is patched:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
* VOR_1_GLIDE_SLOPE returns wrong values - Erroneous values on return have
been corrected, this call is now fully functional.
* Functions and commands return bad LAT/LONG values for southern latitudes -
Lat/Long values have been corrected.
* Fixed to observe crash detection options of FS5. This solves a problem
with some adventures detecting a crash at the beginning and terminating.
Now you can turn off crash detection, start the adventure and when the
aircraft is sitting at the airport you can turn crash detection on.
Sound Problems:
---------------
Even though there has been significant effort at BAO, we have not been able to
reproduce all reported sound problems in house. The user is cautioned to
suspect everything. Are the sound board drivers up to date? Is the sound
card configured properly? Are there other drivers inhibiting the sound card?
Is the sound card specifically supported by Flight Sim? Some sound cards are
not supported.
We have found that in many cases sound problems were corrected by fixing
hardware configurations. You can also try re-running Flight Sim's Setup
program after installing Flight Shop to see if sound is restored.
Finally, some have reported that using replacement .WAV files have solved
their problems. There is a set of replacement sound files on Compuserve's
"FSFORUM" called SOUNDZ.ZIP. These sound files are said to be of better
quality and clear up some reported problems. These .WAV files were authored
by Bryant Arnett. These .WAV files are not supported by BAO or Microsoft,
use at your own risk.
