  17.     Decisive land battle of the Spanish American war.  
  18. This assault on the forward positions of the Spanish 
  19. defenses was suppose to culminate in the capture of 
  20. Santiago de Cuba.  The battle, even though the United
  21. States was victorious, gave the army insight into its
  22. lack of preparedness and the intensity of modern weapons.
  23.  
  24.     The Shafter's plan consisted of Lawton capturing the
  25. garrison at El Caney and driving south to attack the 
  26. Spanish left flank on the San Juan Heights.  With Lawton
  27. bogged down at El Caney the US plan fell into disorder.  
  28. Regiments were ordered into position below the two hills, 
  29. but no decision was made to initiate the assault.
  30. Shafter, 5th Corps leader, made his command post a few miles
  31. east of the battle preventing him from having effective
  32. control over the battle.  Kent, the infantry division leader,
  33. finally ordered an assault at 1:00pm after numerous casualties
  34. were inflicted upon American troops.  The dismounted cavalry 
  35. division followed shortly after obtaining permission.  The 
  36. decisive point in the battle came when Lt. Parker brought his 
  37. battery of Gatling guns into action.  Spanish troops retreated 
  38. towards Fort Canosa after fighting all day and the demoralizing 
  39. affect of Parker's Gatling guns.
  40.     Most American casualties were caused at the base of San Juan
  41. and Kettle Hills while waiting for orders.  205 men were killed
  42.  and 1177 wounded fighting on July 1st(124 KIA 817 WIA San Jaun - 
  43. 81 KIA, 360 WIA El Caney).  On July 1st 10% of all US 
  44. troops on Cuba became casualties attacking the forward, lightly 
  45. held defenses of Santiago de Cuba.  Spanish losses were 35% of 
  46. the 1700 men assigned to the forward defenses. Kettle Hill was 
  47. named after an iron kettle found on the hill.
