valid assessments. :}

SAFETY FIRST -- A DISCLAIMER AND A WARNING
=========================================
This program isn't a production program -- it's been put together
as best as I know how, but it hasn't gone through the immense
testing cycle major packages like Microsoft Office et al go
through (and look how often they fail!).
There's a high probability it will damage Daggerfall save files
if/when it crashes, so you need to be backed up to the max. And
don't rely upon this program's backup capability -- use your own
for safety.
While there's nothing in here all that potentially powerful or
dangerous, you shouldn't run any newer or speculative software
including this program on a production system, or a system that
has difficult or impossible to replicate data or programs on it.
I'm making no promises about this program -- what it does or how
it works. If it works for you, great! if not, that's okay too.
I'm assuming no responsibility for any damage this program may
do. Take all reseaonable precautions. Then take some more.
This release of this program is performed under a limited
one-user license, relinquishing no rights, that allows this
program to be run on one work-station at one time. No copies of
any kind may be made except as part of standard backup procedures.
So much for the painful legal disclaimer -- hate that stuff...
HOW TO RUN IT
=============
Load DFORGE.EXE into the DAGGER directory. Type DFORGE from
there.
It's pretty self/explanatory.
Grayed out Option lines in menus are features that don't work
yet.
If you see a -1 in a field, it's because that field doesn't work
yet (Fatigue is one of these non-working fields).
Once you've selected a save game, we need to find out where in
save game files
the actual data is stored. This changes from save to save, so we
search
for a known data item and go from there.
There are three ways to get this offset quantity:
You can search for you PC's name.
You can enter all 8 of your PC's stats (STR, etc) and
have the program search for them.
If you know it, you can enter the Offset directly in
Decimal or Hex.
*Note* If you PC is named the same as an NPC (like Spider or
Barbarian), the Name Search _will_ screw up fiercely.
Once the program thinks it's found your offset, it displays the
found PC name, and the PC's stats. Make certain the stats
displayed match what's on your char's file. If this isn't a
match, try searching for the offset differently, or try a
different save file.
BACKUPS
=======
This program has a feature to create and restore Backup files.
If you choose the Backup option, this program will create
SAVETREE.CJB and SAVEVARS.CJB (the CJB is my initials -- you'll
see more of this self-aggrandizement...).
When you recover files, it works like this:
1. SAVETREE.DAT and SAVEVARS.DAT are renamed
SAVETREE.@@@ and
SAVEVARS.@@@ respectively
2. SAVETREE.CJB is copied to SAVETREE.DAT
3. SAVEVARS.CJB is copied to SAVEVARS.DAT
4. SAVETREE.@@@ and SAVEVARS.@@@ are deleted.
This whole rigmarole is intended to save your files if the
program crashes during a restore (very unlikely I think). If you
see files with the .@@@ suffix, this indicates an error occurred
here -- I wouldn't delete such files unless I knew my game was in
good shape.
HAND TO HAND SKILL
==================
Modifying this skill is certain to cause weird effects, as the
H-to-H damage calculates very weirdly. One one hand, the save
file may not work. On the other hand, I'm interested in this so
I can fix it. Should you play with this? Heck if I know....
WINDOWS
=======
This program has been tested on versions 3.1, 3.11, and WIN95 of
Windows, and it seems to work -- at least mostly. However, it
was designed to work in DOS, and that's what it does best.
Be extra careful if you're running this program under Windows.
it's better to drop Windows and run this under DOS. If you're
WIN95, use the F8 key when booting, and select the "Command
Prompt" option to run.
CO-ORDS
=======
Modifying your Co-ords will act like Pandora's Teleporter, only
his version is well-designed as a teleporter, while this is more
kludgy. Use at your own risk. You could wind up in really weird
places, or crash the game entirely if you don't enter good
coords.
You can save the name of your PC, so you don't have to type it
every time. We create a file in the \DAGGER\SAVEx\ directory
called DFORGE.NAM containing the name. That way,
when DFORGE wants the name of your character to calculate the
displacement, you don't have to retype it every time.
If you need more money, use the Letter of Credit editor. I don't
want to change gold coins as this will effect encumbrance (the
amount of weight your PC carries) -- something I'd rather not do.
Using the Letter of Credit editor, you can change the amount of
your first letter of credit to any value between 1 and
999,999,999.
COMMENTS AND TECH SUPPORT:
=============================
Regarding technical support, I'll try to do the best I can. If
you have a problem , email me at 75470,3115. If you include a
zipped copy of the save game directory, that'll help a lot.
Also, a description of the error, DFORGE version number, and a
walk-through telling me how to recreate the error help a lot.
And please send your comments and suggestions for future
features.
Thanks all!
