  96.               Welcome to the SOUND BLASTER DIGEST number 8!  We've been
  97.          running for a very good and prosperous 2/3 of a year now, and
  98.          it's only going  to get better!
  99.  
  100.               Work on the SBD has not been very good this month, though. 
  101.          We only have one article sent from a reader this month, to start. 
  102.          Another problem has been that there has been an equipment
  103.          malfunction with the 3.5" drive used to make copies to mail to
  104.          subscribers who want the magazine in this format.  This has
  105.          delayed last months subscriptions, and this months indefinitely. 
  106.          We hope that the problem will be fixed up soon so I can mail
  107.          them off.
  108.  
  109.               A few minor changes in this month's format.  I am taking out
  110.          altogether the section on LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, as our mail
  111.          volume is now too large to continue to print.  Also there are
  112.          fixes in a few minor page-break problems and such.
  113.  
  114.               Next, concerning the READERS SURVEY:  Thanks to those who
  115.          marked the small spelling mistake on the form:  it has been
  116.          corrected.  Thus far we have received a few readers surveys, but
  117.          not many.  We need your input to make this work.  So please fill
  118.          out the form, staple or tape it into the envelope, place
  119.          sufficient postage on the envelope and mail it to me.  I need all
  120.          the surveys I can get.  This helps me in the writing of the
  121.          magazine to make it a better one, and it also allows us to
  122.          publish at the beginning of 1992 the year's best Shareware and
  123.          Commercial software.  This will only work if you mail in the
  124.          form!

  173.               Here's a simple tip for those wishing to convert .ROL files
  174.          to .CMF files.  To cut down on the amount of space the .CMF file
  175.          will require, use Ad Lib's VISUAL COMPOSER to decrease the number
  176.          of instruments necessary for the song.  If the song uses no
  177.          percussion voices, be sure that the .ROL file is set to Melodic
  178.          mode.  If there are other voices that are not being used, be sure
  179.          to assign to them an instrument that is used extensively in the
  180.          piece.  This cuts down on the number of instruments that need to
  181.          be saved into the .CMF file, and thus saves you space!

  185.          SHAREWARE REVIEW:  JUMPMAN LIVES!

  190.               This game has been a personal favourite for a LONG time and
  191.          when I recently downloaded the Shareware version of this I
  192.          thought I was in heaven.
  193.  
  194.               Apogee Software has put out some very impressive Shareware
  195.          efforts lately that have caught my eye.  One of them, Commander
  196.          Keen, sparked my interest because of the impressive graphics for
  197.          a Shareware program.  When I found Jumpman I figured it would be
  198.          a stick figured guy bouncing along with "boing-boing" noises.  I
  199.          was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was a full-fledged
  200.          replication of the original game that won many accolades when it
  201.          first came out.
  202.  
  203.               Although it only supports FM sound, I thought I would write
  204.          a review of it because of the effort by the authors.  The 256
  205.          colour VGA screens, smooth animation, and clean sound just blew
  206.          me away.
  207.  
  208.               How can someone put out a Shareware program like this?  Is
  209.          it crippled?  Will it blow up after 3 uses?  Well, the answer is
  210.          that the Shareware version is a fully functional version, it just
  211.          doesn't have all the levels and the level editor that the
  212.          registered version has.  To me, not a great loss, as I'm having a
  213.          tough time getting through the levels I have now!
  214.  
  215.               This is by no means one of the most sophisticated games on
  216.          the market, but if you like the simpler things in life, this
  217.          should be a #1 on your list, even if you don't get the Commercial
  218.          Registered version (which is only $30 for all 45 levels and the
  219.          level editor), you'd be very happy with the Shareware Version.

  373.          Something, written by George Harrison, and originally preformed
  374.          by The Beatles on their Abbey Road album.  The file should be
  375.          called SOMETHNG.CMF.

  378.          READERS SURVEY and mailing envelope.  Please take the time out to
  379.          fill out this form and mail it to us.

  381.               If you have transcribed a song from sheet, or made your own,
  382.          why not send it in?  Any song received should be in .CMF format,
  383.          and must have been entered by yourself to be considered.  As
  384.          always, you will get credit for your work, and if we use it, I
  385.          will send you your disk back with the edition of the SBD where it
  386.          appears!

  399.          are a SBD reader, please do others a favour and be sure to pass
  400.          it on to other systems!  Even if you only call at 300 bps it only
  401.          takes about 8 minutes to send the average SBD.
