  15. A week after Rupert Murdoch announced his intention to start a 24-hour news
  16. channel to compete with Turner Broadcasting's CNN, Capital Cities/ABC is
  17. expected to declare similar intentions.  The new service, to debut sometime
  18. in 1997, will be delivered to viewers by a mix of cable, telephone or new
  19. technologies, according to people familiar with the situation.  ABC's
  20. service is expected to carry more local news than CNN, provided by its
  21. 200-plus affiliate stations.

  33. Breaking the tight grasp held by chartered banks on the "Interac" electronic
  34. banking network,  Canada's Bureau of Competition policy ruled that other
  35. companies offering new services, such as insurance companies and retailers,
  36. will be allowed full access to the system that runs the country's bank
  37. machines and controls the direct-payment debit-card system.

  50. QVC has taken its home shopping business online, setting up shop on the
  51. Microsoft Network.  iQVC initially will offer computers and other home
  52. office products, as well as jewelry and kitchen wares.  The deal will give
  53. Microsoft an unspecified percentage of total sales, and will allow QVC to
  54. migrate to other online services if it so chooses.

  66. Motorola has developed what it says is the first highly accurate
  67. Chinese-character recognizer.  Its handwriting-recognition technology, which
  68. it hopes will open up Asia's potentially vast PC market, allows users to
  69. input 13,000 Chinese characters into Windows 95 programs.

  82. A survey by the Alliance for Converging Technologies of 2000 U.S. and
  83. Canadian executives in 10 industries (including 239 from education) found
  84. that 86% of the education leaders believe that multimedia and the
  85. information highway will redefine their sector, and 90% identify "absence of
  86. funds" as a barrier to success.  The survey predicts a sharp rise in the
  87. number Internet users, from 5% of education staff today to 34% by 1997.

  99. Canada's National Research Council and the U.S. National Institute of
  100. Standards and Technology have jointly developed new air-quality software to
  101. help architects and designers to calculate air quality before building
  102. construction begins, hopefully ending the recent plague of  sick buildings.
  103. The program will measure airborne chemicals given off by construction
  104. materials and indoor furnishings, and how various changes in building design
  105. can affect them.
