What is Satori?
Satori is a solitaire game played on a
10x10 board, with 60 different tiles.
Each tile has a path segment on it, in
one of five different colors: red,
yellow, green, blue, and violet. The
tiles are shuffled, and then drawn one
at a time from the stack.
The point of the game is to place the
tiles on the board in such a way as to
create the longest possible connected
path, by placing any given tile next
to a tile with a connecting path
segment. ("Longest possible" does not
mean "longest straight-line." It
simply means that the tiles are
connected as much as possible.) For
example, the tile with the "╩" pattern
can connect upwardly with the tiles
showing "╔" or "╣", but not with "═".
Adjacent non- connecting styles do not
score, but 2 points are scored for
every connection that can be made on a
given play. A bonus of 5 points per
connection is given when connecting
tiles are of the same color. You will
quickly discover that connections can
only be made along the orthagonal
directions (up, down, left, right).
General Principles
1) Once a tile is played, it cannot be
moved.
2) Tiles cannot be placed on
top of existing tiles.
Options
There are two modes to Satori: the
novice, and the expert. In the novice
game, tiles may be played anywhere on
the board. In the expert game, tiles
must be played adjacent to tiles
already on the board. Needless to
say, this is a much more difficult
game, but nobody said the way to
Satori is easy!
You can't change the playing mode
after you've laid down the first tile.
The blank tiles
There are 5 blank tiles which do not
score when placed. In the novice
game, these may seem gratuitous, since
they can be played out of harm's way,
but in the expert game they must be
played adjacent to existing tiles.
This renders them not at all
gratuitous.
Keeping the high score
The high score list in Satori is kept
with paper and a writing instrument
such as a pen or pencil.
The Mouse
The left mouse button places the tiles
on the game board, and activates the
screen buttons. The right mouse
button ends the current game.
