Pocket SCORCH 1.22 - 30/08/1999
-------------------------------
(C) 1999 Hybrid Holding, Ltd. / Jouni Mannonen (jouni@hybrid.fi)
http://www.hybrid.fi/palm/
Pocket SCORCH is an addictive game of artillery combat. The battlefield
is a range of mountains occupied by 2-6 tanks, each controlled by a human
player or an artificial intelligence. Carefully choosing the fire angle
and power, the aim is to take out all opposing tanks before they get you.
Pocket SCORCH is fun to play alone, but *best* with other human opponents.
Keep shareware alive! Enjoy the game!
Other titles by the same author:
SQUIRM - A highly playable remake of the classic worm game.
TOTAL RECALL - The classic game of memory, enjoyable brain workout.
Free versions of these games can be downloaded from
http://www.palmgear.com or http://www.hybrid.fi/palm/ !
Starting up:
When the application is launched, the main menu will come up with
choices to change current game options, start the game or to register
this application.
Remember, that by registering you support the shareware concept, as well
as unlock the full game for your enjoyment.
Flow of the Game:
When the START GAME button is tapped, a form with player settings and
game duration comes up; use this to customize the game to your liking.
There can beup to six players, each a human or a computer controlled tank.
After settings are done, before each round begins, you are allowed to
spend your hard-earned cash at the weapons shop. Weapons are listed by
price and inventory, you can tap on the ones you want to make the
purchase. Each player goes through this in order.
During each round, every time a tank is destroyed, a message will
display on screen for two seconds. This delay can be skipped by
either tapping the screen or pressing the DATEBOOK hard button.
After each round, statistics and standings will be displayed. You can
continue from each of these by tapping the screen with the stylus.
Controlling the Game:
The game can be played throughout using the stylus only, but the hard
buttons can be used as an alternative to most actions.
The WEAPON icon can be tapped to cycle through the weapons available to
you. Each tank starts equipped with an unlimited supply of Baby Missiles,
and different weapons can be purchased at the shop between rounds. The
DATEBOOK hard button can be used in place of this tap.
The small arrows left and right of the ANGLE display can be tapped to
increase and decrease the weapon aim angle while a human player is in
turn. The angle can not be greater than 90 degrees to either direction.
The hard buttons for PHONEBOOK and TODO can be used in place of this tap.
The small arrows left and right of the POWER display can be tapped to
increase and decrease the firing power while a human player is in turn.
The power be between 1 and 999. The hard buttons for PAGE UP and
PAGE DOWN can be used in place of this tap.
When ready to fire the weapon, the F symbol placed between ANGLE and
POWER can be tapped for a single shot of fire. The MEMO hard button can
be used in place of this tap.
The PAW icon on screen can be tapped to pause the game, and the
SPEAKER icon to control sound volume. Thanks to Aaron Ardiri for
the pause and sound control icons!
The DOUBLE ARROW icon next to the PAW icon can be tapped and held down
to speed up the game flow; the main use of this is to speed past long
drawn computer-only shootouts. Shots will not be visible on screen while
the DOUBLE ARROW icon is held down.
To quit a game in progress, the QUIT GAME option found under main menu
can be used to return back to main menu screen.
Winning the Round:
Each round has a cash prize which will be divided between everyone who
scored a kill. If no kills are registered, the pot goes to the last tank
alive on the field. Note that killing yourself registers as a negative
kill, and can thus reduce your earnings for the round.
Winning the Game:
At the end of the specified number of rounds, the tank with the most
kills is declared the winner. You can now try to beat the game on
different skill levels, environment settings or number of participants.
The variations are endless, use your imagination!
Hints and Strategies:
Remember where you hit on the previous round and use this information
to aim better when you get your next shot. Be wary, though, that the
wind can play unexpected tricks on you, especially on the strong settings.
If the computer players seem too difficult, you can reduce their skill
level from the GAME OPTIONS menu. Tuning the computer opponents to FEEBLE
should make them sitting ducks, while the IMPECCABLE setting should be
used only by those highly confident in their skills.
When firing nuclear weapons, remember that the blast radius can be quite
large; firing close up may result in the vaporization of your own tank as
well as your opponents. Heavy firepower is not a replacement for sharp
aim!
A beginning player can find the game more enjoyable when the wind
settings are turned off. The constantly changing winds provide quite
a challenge even for the most skilled player.
