  1. NETWORK INSTALLATION WIZARD README FILE
  2.  
  3. The Network Installation Wizard is described in Chapter 9,
  4. "Customizing Client Installations," in the Office Resource
  5. Kit. This readme file contains additional detail not covered
  6. in the Office Resource Kit.

  15. 1. NETWORK INSTALLATION WIZARD LIMITATIONS
  16. The Network Installation Wizard is designed as a tool to
  17. modify generic STF files but has been tailored for use with
  18. the Office 95 STF. It should only be used with the Office 95
  19. STF file.
  20.  
  21. 1.1  Custom Entries
  22.      The Include Additional Entries feature in the Network
  23.      Installation Wizard allows you to add custom files and
  24.      custom registration entries to the installation.
  25.  
  26. 1.1.1  Custom Files
  27.        - Using the Network Installation Wizard, you can add a
  28.          maximum of 84 files to the setup process.
  29.        - If new files are added, you must replace the original Inf
  30.          file with the new Inf file for Setup to find the
  31.          additional files.
  32.        - All custom files must be in the Custom subfolder of the
  33.          administrative installation. If any custom file is not in
  34.          that folder, Setup will generate an error.
  35.        - The destination you specify when adding a custom file is
  36.          hard coded in the STF file.
  37.  
  38. 1.1.2  Custom Registration Entries
  39.        - The only verification made on a custom registration entry
  40.          is ensuring that a key is provided. When using the
  41.          wizard, it is imperative that you verify spelling and
  42.          content. USE CAUTION - IMPROPER REGISTRY ENTRIES CAN
  43.          CAUSE WINDOWS 95 TO FAIL.
  44.        - Setup can only modify registration entries that are
  45.          String or DWORD types; Binary type values cannot be
  46.          modified during an installation.

  49. 1.2  Application Launching Options
  50.      This dialog box only lists the links that are created when
  51.      installing on a Windows NT workstation. If you choose to not
  52.      install a specific link, or if you select the Install No
  53.      Links option, this will affect only the links created on
  54.      Windows NT. The shortcuts created on the Start menu by Office
  55.      95 applications can be modified by the Configure Shortcut
  56.      Installation Options item in the Office Options dialog box of
  57.      the Wizard.

  60. 1.3  Office Options
  61.      These options can be grouped into three types: setting
  62.      locations, setting other default values, and minimizing
  63.      footprints for a Workstation Installation.
  64.  
  65. 1.3.1  Setting locations
  66.        By default, the locations defined in the STF file for these
  67.        items are specified as relative paths. The actual locations
  68.        where the files are installed on disk are determined during
  69.        installation using such factors as the folder specified by
  70.        the user for Office and the user's current drive letter
  71.        mappings.
  72.        
  73.        If you define a location for one of these settings, then
  74.        that location will be specified in the STF file exactly as
  75.        you enter it, including any drive letter given. Therefore,
  76.        we recommend that you not change these default locations
  77.        unless you are certain that all your users have consistent
  78.        drive letter mappings and can use the same absolute paths
  79.        for these files.

  81.        If you select an item and then click the Edit Selection
  82.        button, the wizard will propose a location for that item.
  83.        You can keep the proposed path or modify it. If you click
  84.        OK, the given absolute path will be written to the STF
  85.        file. These locations can be modified by the end user after
  86.        installation in the same way the end user would normally
  87.        change default locations.

  90. 1.3.2  Setting default values
  91.        These items allow you to preset the default settings for
  92.        certain features.
  93.  
  94. 1.3.3  Minimizing footprints
  95.        Warning: These options have undergone some testing,
  96.        but it is possible that situations may exist in
  97.        which these options will fail. If any of these
  98.        changes cause a problem such as a file not being
  99.        found, open and modify the original STF file with
  100.        the Network Installation Wizard, except without
  101.        setting this specific option, and then reinstall
  102.        Office.
  103.        
  104.        You should also be aware of possible contention
  105.        issues that may arise if you allow write access to
  106.        templates shared by multiple users over a network.
  107.        If an Office application allows two users to open a
  108.        template file simultaneously, then if both users
  109.        both attempt to modify the file at the same time,
  110.        only the changes written by the last user to write
  111.        to the file will be saved. If the application opens
  112.        the template exclusively, then the first user to
  113.        open the file will succeed and others will not be
  114.        allowed to open the file.
  115.        
  116.        Additional Notes:
  117.        - In an environment where the applications are shared over
  118.          the network, an additional five MB of files that are not
  119.          System files may be installed locally for each user by
  120.          default. Depending on the specific item, the Network
  121.          Installation Wizard may give you the option of using the
  122.          files over the network or not installing them.
  123.        - Minimized PowerPoint - The Network Installation Wizard
  124.          allows the administrator to move the PowerPoint PPA
  125.          (wizard) files from the local machine to a shared
  126.          location on the network.
  127.        - Minimized Office Shortcut Bar  - All files can be shared,
  128.          but for individual flexibility the Toolbar root location
  129.          is kept local so the links can be created, removed, or
  130.          modified by the end user. This requires typically less
  131.          than 10KB of disk space by default.  See the Last Minute
  132.          Update 5.1c below for additional information
  133.        - Minimized Find Fast - The initial footprint of Find Fast
  134.          is small (less than 100KB) but the indexes it generates
  135.          can grow to 3-5% of the size of the documents being
  136.          indexed. The benefit of having Find Fast on the local
  137.          machine is increased performance in searching for
  138.          documents; however, some administrators may choose to
  139.          trade performance for space by not installing Find Fast.

  142. 2. CREATING A SHORTCUT FOR USERS TO RUN SETUP
  143.  
  144. An easy way for users to access the modified setup is to use
  145. a shortcut that you've created and distributed to them. You
  146. can create a shortcut to the setup file with the command
  147. line parameter to run installation in quiet mode, as well as
  148. with any additional command line parameters needed. This
  149. will ensure that users get the default options you have
  150. specified. Quiet mode runs setup using the default options
  151. set by the Network Installation Wizard. For more information
  152. on quiet mode, see Chapter 9, "Customizing Client
  153. Installations" in the Office Resource Kit.

  155. To create a shortcut to the correct setup:
  156.  1. Rename the original setup.stf to something else, such as
  157.     oldsetup.stf.
  158.  2. Open oldsetup.stf with the Network Installation Wizard and set
  159.     the options you want.
  160.  3. Save these changes to a file named setup.stf.
  161.  4. Create a shortcut to setup.exe in the same folder. For
  162.     information about creating Windows 95 shortcuts, see the
  163.     Windows 95 Help.
  164.  5. After the shortcut to setup.exe is created, point to it and
  165.     click the right mouse button. On the Shortcut menu, click
  166.     Properties.
  167.  6. Click the Shortcut tab.
  168.  7. The Target box should contain a path to setup.exe. Add the
  169.     command line parameter '/Q' to the end of this line along with
  170.     any other parameters you need (/Q runs setup in quiet mode).
  171.     Click OK.
  172.  
  173. The shortcut created will now run setup in quiet mode. This
  174. shortcut can be renamed to anything you want, such as
  175. "Office 95 Setup for the Support Group" or "Setup  for
  176. Executive Assistants".
  177.

  179. 3. TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
  180. - If you have problems using the Network Installation
  181.   Wizard, delete all left over files in the Temp directory,
  182.   restart Windows to clear memory, and then try again.
  183. - Be sure you have at least 2-3 MB available in your Temp
  184.   area for the work files that the wizard will create.

  194. 5. LAST MINUTE UPDATES
  195.  
  196. Known issues with this release of the Network Installation
  197. Wizard are listed below. You can identify the release by the size of the 
  198. executable "Network Installation Wizard.exe" or NIW.EXE.

  207. 5.1  Office Options
  208.  
  209. 5.1a   "Minimize Footprint of Access Briefcase Replication"
  210.        "Briefcase replication" is not an accurate description of 
  211.        the Office Option referencing replication. The 228K 
  212.        file is not used by Windows 95 Briefcase replication, but it is
  213.        used for conflict resolution for any type of Access database 
  214.        replication conflict. Without this file installed, problems would
  215.        arise on any OS that does not have the "Briefcase" utility. This
  216.        file needs to be present for any users who will be using 
  217.        replicated databases.  See 5.2a of this README.
  218.  
  219. 5.1b   Minimized Office Shortcut Bar.
  220.        If this option is used the administrator must do either of the 
  221.        following.
  222.          Either:
  223.               Copy the file MSOW.EXE from the 
  224.               <Admin Install>\OS\SYSTEM directory to the 
  225.               <Admin Install>\OFFICE directory
  226.           or
  227.                Run the first client install with full Read/Write access
  228.                to the <Admin Install>\OFFICE directory so that Setup
  229.                can copy the file there.
  230.           If this is not done, buttons using this file will not function
  231.           properly and the icons may show generic icons
  232.           (e.g. Open a Document, Answer Wizard)
  233.  
  234. 5.2    Corrections\Additions\Changes
  235.     
  236. 5.2a    Some Office Options would ignore the 'Yes/No' value.
  237.         The following options would always perform the 'Yes' option
  238.         whenever they were viewed and 'OK' was selected instead 
  239.         of 'Cancel'.
  240.            "Minimize Footprint of Access Briefcase Replication"
  241.            "Prevent Bookshelf '95 integration"
  242.            "Prevent the addition of the Office Compatible button"
  243.     This was corrected as of Version 1.0b 
  244.  
  245. 5.2b    Changes to the Word Document File Location were being written to 
  246.     an invalid registry key. This was corrected as of Version 1.1.
  247.     
  248. 5.2c    The NIW would automatically delete any pre-existing NEWSETUP.STF 
  249.     if 'cancel' was selected during an editing session. This was 
  250.     corrected as of Version 1.1. Reference KnowledgeBase article Q145569.
  251.     
  252. 5.2d    When you run the NIW and select a Microsoft Office for Windows 95,
  253.     version 7.0a,(Standard or Professional edition) Setup.stf in the 
  254.     File Open dialog box, the file appears to load completely followed 
  255.     by the following error message:       
  256.         '' isn't an index in this table 
  257.     Reference KnowledgeBase article Q148303. This was corrected as 
  258.     of Version 1.1.
  259.     
  260. 5.2e    The NIW would previously perform only the last directory change
  261.     made in the component selection section. This was corrected as 
  262.     of Version 1.1.
  263.     
  264. 5.2f    The NIW now supports the removal of Schedule Plus 7.0 from the 
  265.     Office 95 setup. This affects all installation types. This is 
  266.     available as of Version 1.1.
  267.     
  268. 5.2g    The NIW now provides an option for correcting the failure of a 
  269.     Run-From-Server installation against an IBM LanServer box. 
  270.     Reference KnowledgeBase article Q147127. This is available as 
  271.     of Version 1.1.
  272.  
  273. 5.2h    The support for command line switches '/enhanced' and '/edlin'
  274.     have been removed as of Version 1.1.
  275.  
  276. 5.2i    The NIW now supports the use of a universal naming convention (UNC) 
  277.     path to select the location of the .stf file. Reference KnowledgeBase
  278.     article Q145569. This is available as of Version 1.1.
  279.  
  280. 5.2j    The NIW would previously hardcode the initial directory setting 
  281.     if the administrator specified a Compact or Custom installation
  282.     type. This would cause setup to ignore the location specified by 
  283.     the user as a destination during an interactive setup. This was 
  284.     corrected as of Version 1.1a.

  287. You may download the most current version of this utility by going to 
  288. the Technet locations on MSN or the WorldWide Web.
