  24. 1. General Notes
  25. ================
  26.   IMPORTANT!
  27.   You must IMPERATIVELY read this README file and all the documentation
  28.   supplied BEFORE you continue the installation!
  29.   Otherwise SPEA cannot accept any responsibility for claims that may be
  30.   caused as a consequence.

  32.   Please be aware that you can only take full advantage of the
  33.   features provided by the MIRAGE VIDEO, if the other components of
  34.   your system, especially the graphic monitor that is being used,
  35.   also comply with the specifications of the MIRAGE VIDEO.
  36.   (Example : The resolution 1280x1024 that is supported by the
  37.   MIRAGE VIDEO can obviously not be used with a monitor that is
  38.   specified to only support resolutions up to 1024x768).

  40. 2. Installation
  41. ===============
  42.   SPEA offers the MIRAGE VIDEO with and without a MPEG hardware
  43.   module. The installation detects automaticly the module and
  44.   uses the right installation.
  45.  
  46.   The program calls stated below refer to the installation from the
  47.   SPEA installation disks and the SPEA Media Gallery CD ('MG-CD'). 
  48.   If you have only floppies in the box, the software at the floppies 
  49.   will be newer as the current CD.
  50.  
  51. 2.1 Installation under DOS
  52. ==========================
  53. Note:
  54.   Before you start the installation you should know where (drive and 
  55.   directory) your applications are installed for which you wish to
  56.   install driver software.
  57.  
  58.   Start the installation from
  59.   a) Disk with               b) MG-CD with
  60.      A:\                        <CD drive>:
  61.      INSTALL                    SPEAINST
  62.  
  63.   After the installation it will normally be necessary to reconfigure
  64.   your applications for the new driver software. The steps necessary
  65.   to achieve this are described in the manuals.
  66.  
  67.   VESA Modes:
  68.   -----------
  69.   VESA mode support is integrated in the BIOS of the MIRAGE VIDEO.
  70.  
  71.  2.2 Installation under Windows / Windows 95
  72. ===========================================
  73.   Note: The install program detects your operatin system and installs
  74.   the correct drivers. 
  75.   
  76.   Select the menu items 'File' and then 'Run' in the Windows Program
  77.   Manager. Then enter:
  78.  
  79.   a) (Disk)                  b) (MG-CD)
  80.      A:\SETUP                   <CD drive>:SPEAINST
  81.  
  82. Note:
  83.   If you intend to use the DOS programs SPTUNE, MX2TEST and S3TEST under
  84.   Windows 95 then you must do this via the Explorer ('Start', 'Run')
  85.   using the path C:\SPEA\GDC\SPTUNE for example, and NOT via a DOS
  86.   box.

  89.   Windows 95 and problems while playing Video-CD or CDI
  90.   -----------------------------------------------------
  91.   Our MPEG playback MCI driver uses the WIN95 driver for the CD-ROM 
  92.   drive. If Win95 doesn't support your CDROM controller not rigth (if
  93.   you use a CDROM drive at a IDE port, you are using the Win95 controller
  94.   driver for the IDE controller), there are 2 workarounds:
  95.   - Using the DOS-realmode driver
  96.   Install the CDROM driver in the Config.sys and \WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE
  97.   in autoexec.bat. Additional it could be possible to disable the 32 bit
  98.   mode for the drives.
  99.   - Using an other IDE controller
  100.   Use an other, secondary, IDE controller (normally address 170, IRQ 15
  101.   or 10), supported by Win95. If you use your CD-ROM at this port, the 
  102.   problem should be solved. 
  103.   (Only possible if your motherboard uses only one IDE controller, normally 
  104.   address 1F0, IRQ 14). 
  105.   You can use a second IDE port at newer soundboards with IDE port (no 
  106.   soundboards with CD-ROM CDROM interfaces for special xxx-drives) or a
  107.   simple ISA IDE controller. 
  108.   
  109. 2.3 Installation under OS/2 Warp
  110. ================================
  111.    The Driver for OS/2 are not a part of the floppy release. Please get the
  112.   from our CD-ROM or turn to the SPEA Mailbox.
  113.  
  114.   To install other drivers and tools z.B. for Win-OS/2, start Win-OS/2 
  115.   and continue as described in section 2.2
  116.  
  117. 2.4 Installing the Windows NT 3.5 Driver
  118. ========================================
  119.    The Driver for NT are not a part of the floppy release. Please get the
  120.   from our CD-ROM or turn to the SPEA Mailbox.
  121.  
  122. 3.  Choosing a Monitor
  123. ======================
  124.   As mentioned above, the graphics monitor you choose to use with
  125.   your board should be technically suitable for use with your
  126.   MIRAGE VIDEO board in order to be able fully utilize this.
  127.  
  128.   The display refresh rate for graphical user interface operating
  129.   systems (Windows [95], OS/2 and Windows NT) is selected using
  130.   the corresponding program V7SETUP, V7SETOS2 and V7SETNT.
  131.  
  132.   Extended tuning (with display image positioning) and the selection
  133.   of the display refresh rate for DOS programs such as AutoCAD for 
  134.   DOS, is made with the program SPEAtune (SPTUNE).
  135.  
  136. Note:
  137.   SPTUNE is exclusively programmed for use under DOS.
  138.   
  139.                  *** IMPORTANT ***
  140.  
  141.   Only use settings that your monitor supports. If you use the monitor
  142.   outside the specified ratings then it may suffer permanent damage!
  143.   If you change the monitor then you must compare the ratings first
  144.   and should reconfigure with SPTUNE accordingly!

  147. 4.  Known Restrictions
  148. ======================
  149.  
  150.   (1) It is generally not possible to use more than one active VGA
  151.   board simultaneously in a PC.
  152.   If your PC has a VGA adapter on the motherboard and you wish to use
  153.   the MIRAGE VIDEO, then you must deactivate the VGA adapter in the
  154.   PC first.
  155.   
  156.  (2) MPEG playback with the hardware MPEG-Module
  157.   - If you installed first the XING player and after that the MPEG 
  158.   Modul, the link between the mpg extension and the XING Player still 
  159.   exist. With a mouse double click at a *.mpg file the XING player 
  160.   will be started with a error massage. This problem don't exist while
  161.   playing a MPEG file with the SPEA MEDIASTATION or the Windows media
  162.   player. Will be fixed in the next release.
  163.    - With SPTUNE stored monitor modes can't be used with WINTUNE.
  164.   Will be fixed in the next release.
  165.   (3) A Software MPEG Decoder for WIN95, supporting DIRECT DRAW will be
  166.   available soon via BBS /Compuserve. (The WIN95 driver are already
  167.   supporting DIRECT DRAW.)
  168.   (4) If you have under win3.1x a MPEG Module installed and you have in the 
  169.   program V7SETUP the button 'Hardware support' enabled, the program SPEAVIEW
  170.   doesn't work. (Failure message: BigWin 1.42 or higher needed)

  172. 5.  Notes on Applications
  173. =========================
  174.   Seperate README files exist for the applications supported by the
  175.   MIRAGE VIDEO. These contain information on last-minute changes
  176.   that could not be included in the manual. They also contain 
  177.   information concerning known restrictions.
  178.   The README files are also copied to the \SPEA\GDC directory during 
  179.   the software installation when you select a driver. The files have
  180.   the extension .DOC.
  181.   You can view the respective README files by entering SHOW *.DOC.

  183.   Example:

  188.  5.1. Mirage Video together with the SPEA Crunch It
  189. If you want to play a MPEG file, while you have installed the SPEA 
  190. Crunch It via the SPEA MoviBus, it may happen, that your system crashes. 
  191. This may happen only with the MPEG Module hardware revision R10 
  192. (indicated at the back side of the MPEG Module). 
  193. If you have the revision R10A02, R11... or higher, this problem could 
  194. not occur.
  195. If this problem occures on your PC, please call our dept. System and 
  196. Service to get a new MPEG Module.

  199. 6.  Corrections to the Manual
  200. =============================
  201.   
  202.   MIRAGE VIDEO and SPEA Ergonomic Modes up to 100 Hz:
  203.   -------------------------------------------------------
  204.   The BIOS of your MIRAGE VIDEO supports all available resolutions
  205.   up to a frequency of 75 Hz. An additional software solution (SPTUNE)
  206.   also makes refresh rates up to 100 Hz possible. An overview of the
  207.   frequencies available can be found in the file BIOS.TXT.
  208.   Important: the SPEA ergonomic modes with frequencies over 75 Hz are
  209.   only active if the program 'V7HFREQ' has been called with the parameter
  210.   't' (Windows 95: V7HFREQ tw). For this reason, a corresponding call 
  211.   is placed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file during the installation.

  213.   S3TEST:
  214.   -------
  215.   S3TEST is a program provided to test your graphics board for errors. It
  216.   check whether the board is correctly functioning together with your PC.
  217.   During the testing phase (which can take a few seconds), a number of
  218.   different color patterns will be displayed on your monitor (these are
  219.   different according to the board being tested). The patterns created 
  220.   are the result of technical tests and do NOT represent an error on
  221.   your board. An accurate result is shown at the end of the test routine.
