1. General Notes
================
IMPORTANT!
You must IMPERATIVELY read this README file and all the documentation
supplied BEFORE you continue the installation!
Otherwise SPEA cannot accept any responsibility for claims that may be
caused as a consequence.
Please be aware that you can only take full advantage of the
features provided by the SPEA FIRE GL, if the other components of
your system, especially the graphic monitor that is being used,
also comply with the specifications of the SPEA FIRE GL.
(Example : The resolution 1280x1024 that is supported by the
SPEA FIRE GL can obviously not be used with a monitor that is
specified to only support resolutions up to 1024x768).
SPEA has an own OS/2 3.0 (Warp) driver, the BigBlue driver. This
driver isn't available by now and threrfore not within the current delivery
of driver-diskettes. When it will be released it is available on the
SPEA Mailbox or Compuserve (GO SPEA).
2. Installation
===============
The program calls stated below refer to the installation from the
SPEA installation disks and the SPEA Media Gallery CD ('MG-CD').
2.1 Installation under DOS
==========================
Note:
Before you start the installation you should know where (drive and
directory) your applications are installed for which you wish to
install driver software.
Start the installation from
a) Disk with b) MG-CD with
A:\ <CD drive>:
INSTALL SPEAINST
After the installation it will normally be necessary to reconfigure
your applications for the new driver software. The steps necessary
to achieve this are described in the manuals.
VESA Modes:
-----------
VESA mode support is integrated in the BIOS of the SPEA FIRE GL.
MicroStation:
-------------
A SPEA driver for MicroStation is currently not available. As soon as
this is rectified, the driver will be placed at your disposal via
our BBS and CompuServe.
2.2 Installation under Windows
==============================
Select the menu items 'File' and then 'Run' in the Windows Program
Manager. Then enter:
a) (Disk) b) (MG-CD)
A:\SETUP <CD drive>:SPEAINST
2.3 Installation under OS/2 Warp
================================
To install the driver software under OS/2 and Win-OS/2, put the disk
or CD in the respective drive and start as follows:
a) (Disk) b) (MG-CD)
A:\V7SETOS2 <CD drive>:SPEAINST
To install other drivers and tools, start Win-OS/2 and continue as
described in section 2.2
The OS/2 Drivers are available soon and if they are released they
will be available for your download at our BBS (read also MAILBOX.TXT).
2.4 Installing the Windows NT 3.5 Driver
========================================
The driver for Windows NT 3.5 is not a part of the standard delivery
scope. To install, select the menu items 'File' and then 'Run' in the
Windows Program Manager. Then enter:
a) (Disk) b) (MG-CD)
A:\V7SETNT <CD drive>:SPEAINST
2.5 Notes for Use with Windows 95
=================================
The secundary DCI functions for the acceleration of Video for Windows
have not been fully defined by Microsoft and are therefore not available.
NOTE: The button 'Hardware Video Support' must be deactivated.
The installation is the same as described in section 2.2 (Windows).
The differing requirements for the operating system are automatically
accounted for by the installation program.
Note:
If you intend to use the DOS programs SPTUNE and S3TEST under
Windows 95 then you must do this via the Explorer ('Start', 'Run')
using the path C:\SPEA\GDC\SPTUNE for example, and NOT via a DOS
box.
3. Choosing a Monitor
======================
As mentioned above, the graphics monitor you choose to use with
your board should be technically suitable for use with your
SPEA FIRE GL board in order to be able fully utilize this.
The display refresh rate for graphical user interface operating
systems (Windows [95], OS/2 and Windows NT) is selected using
the corresponding program V7SETUP, V7SETOS2 and V7SETNT.
Extended tuning (with display image positioning) and the selection
of the display refresh rate for DOS programs such as AutoCAD for
DOS, is made with the program SPEAtune (SPTUNE).
Note:
SPTUNE is exclusively programmed for use under DOS operating system.
*** IMPORTANT ***
Only use settings that your monitor supports. If you use the monitor
outside the specified ratings then it may suffer permanent damage!
If you change the monitor then you must compare the ratings first
and should reconfigure with SPTUNE accordingly!
4. Known Restrictions
======================
(1) It is generally not possible to use more than one active VGA
board simultaneously in a PC.
If your PC has a VGA adapter on the motherboard and you wish to use
the SPEA FIRE GL, then you must deactivate the VGA adapter in the
PC first.
(2) Some applications, e.g. Windows 3.1, Word ..., offer an internal
configuration program which in turn offer 'Video 7 ...' drivers as
the VGA device.
These can NOT be used for the SPEA FIRE GL!
To achieve optimal driver configuration in cases like these, proceed
with the installation and configuration of driver software as
described in the manual of the SPEA FIRE GL.
5. Motherboard Compatibility
============================
The SPEA FIRE GL is only working in motherboards which supports the
PCI v.2.0 (or higher) standard. This specification supports and
initializes correct such "multi function devices" like our SPEA FIRE GL.
Problems with incomplete PCI v.2.0 support may arise in older
80486-based PCs. The Glint-Chip from 3D-Labs may be not detected and
initialized, so that our software doesn't work fine. Remedy may have a
system-BIOS update of your motherboard-BIOS supplied by your
motherboard-manufacturer or dealer. Following motherboards are
successfully tested at SPEA:
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Manuf. Type Processor BIOS Version │
├───────┬─────────────────┬───────────┬───────┬───────────────────┤
│ ASUS │ PVI-486 SP3 │ 486DX2 │ Award │ 4.50G #401A0-0203 │

│ Intel │ Endeavor │ Pentium │ AMI │ 1.00.02.CB0 │

6. Notes on Applications
=========================
Seperate README files exist for the applications supported by the
SPEA FIRE GL. These contain information on last-minute changes
that could not be included in the manual. They also contain
information concerning known restrictions.
The README files are also copied to the \SPEA\GDC directory during
the software installation when you select a driver. The files have
the extension .DOC.
You can view the respective README files by entering SHOW *.DOC.
Example:
--------
C:>CD \SPEA\GDC Change to \SPEA\GDC directory
C:\SPEA\GDC>SHOW ACAD.DOC Show README file for AutoCAD
7. Corrections to the Manual
=============================
SPEA FIRE GL and SPEA Ergonomic Modes up to 160 Hz:
-------------------------------------------------------
The BIOS of your SPEA FIRE GL supports all available resolutions
up to a frequency of 75 Hz. An additional software solution (SPTUNE)
also makes refresh rates up to 160 Hz possible. An overview of the
frequencies available can be found in the file BIOS.TXT.
Important: the SPEA ergonomic modes with frequencies over 75 Hz are
only active if the program 'V7HFREQ' has been called with the parameter
't'. For this reason, a corresponding call is placed in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file during the installation.
S3TEST:
-------
S3TEST is a program provided to test the S3 part of your graphics board
for errors. It check whether the board is correctly functioning together
with your PC. During the testing phase (which can take a few seconds),
a number of different color patterns will be displayed on your monitor
(these are different according to the board being tested). The patterns
created are the result of technical tests and do NOT represent an error
on your board. An accurate result is shown at the end of the test routine.
8. SPEA Software AG: Support / Service / Latest Software
