  25. 1. General Notes
  26. ================
  27. IMPORTANT!
  28.   You must IMPERATIVELY read this README file and all the documentation
  29.   supplied BEFORE you continue the installation!
  30.   Otherwise SPEA cannot accept any responsibility for claims that may be
  31.   caused as a consequence.

  33.   Please be aware that you can only take full advantage of the
  34.   features provided by the SPEA FIRE GL, if the other components of
  35.   your system, especially the graphic monitor that is being used,
  36.   also comply with the specifications of the SPEA FIRE GL.
  37.   (Example : The resolution 1280x1024 that is supported by the
  38.   SPEA FIRE GL can obviously not be used with a monitor that is
  39.   specified to only support resolutions up to 1024x768).

  41.   SPEA has an own OS/2 3.0 (Warp) driver, the BigBlue driver. This
  42.   driver isn't available by now and threrfore not within the current delivery
  43.   of driver-diskettes. When it will be released it is available on the
  44.   SPEA Mailbox or Compuserve (GO SPEA).

  47. 2. Installation
  48. ===============
  49.   The program calls stated below refer to the installation from the
  50.   SPEA installation disks and the SPEA Media Gallery CD ('MG-CD').
  51.

  53. 2.1 Installation under DOS
  54. ==========================
  55. Note:
  56.   Before you start the installation you should know where (drive and 
  57.   directory) your applications are installed for which you wish to
  58.   install driver software.
  59.  
  60.   Start the installation from
  61.   a) Disk with               b) MG-CD with
  62.      A:\                        <CD drive>:
  63.      INSTALL                    SPEAINST
  64.  
  65.   After the installation it will normally be necessary to reconfigure
  66.   your applications for the new driver software. The steps necessary
  67.   to achieve this are described in the manuals.

  69.   VESA Modes:
  70.   -----------
  71.   VESA mode support is integrated in the BIOS of the SPEA FIRE GL.
  72.  
  73.   MicroStation:
  74.   -------------
  75.   A SPEA driver for MicroStation is currently not available. As soon as
  76.   this is rectified, the driver will be placed at your disposal via
  77.   our BBS and CompuServe.

  80. 2.2 Installation under Windows
  81. ==============================
  82.   Select the menu items 'File' and then 'Run' in the Windows Program
  83.   Manager. Then enter:

  89. 2.3 Installation under OS/2 Warp
  90. ================================
  91.   To install the driver software under OS/2 and Win-OS/2, put the disk
  92.   or CD in the respective drive and start as follows:
  93.  
  94.   a) (Disk)                  b) (MG-CD)
  95.      A:\V7SETOS2                <CD drive>:SPEAINST

  97.   To install other drivers and tools, start Win-OS/2 and continue as
  98.   described in section 2.2
  99.  
  100.   The OS/2 Drivers are available soon and if they are released they
  101.   will be available for your download at our BBS (read also MAILBOX.TXT).

  104. 2.4 Installing the Windows NT 3.5 Driver
  105. ========================================
  106.   The driver for Windows NT 3.5 is not a part of the standard delivery
  107.   scope. To install, select the menu items 'File' and then 'Run' in the 
  108.   Windows Program Manager. Then enter:
  109.  
  110.   a) (Disk)                  b) (MG-CD)

  114. 2.5 Notes for Use with Windows 95
  115. =================================
  116.   The secundary DCI functions for the acceleration of Video for Windows 
  117.   have not been fully defined by Microsoft and are therefore not available.
  118.   NOTE: The button 'Hardware Video Support' must be deactivated.
  119.  
  120.   The installation is the same as described in section 2.2 (Windows).
  121.   The differing requirements for the operating system are automatically
  122.   accounted for by the installation program.

  124. Note:
  125.   If you intend to use the DOS programs SPTUNE and S3TEST under
  126.   Windows 95 then you must do this via the Explorer ('Start', 'Run')
  127.   using the path C:\SPEA\GDC\SPTUNE for example, and NOT via a DOS
  128.   box.

  131. 3. Choosing a Monitor
  132. ======================
  133.   As mentioned above, the graphics monitor you choose to use with
  134.   your board should be technically suitable for use with your
  135.   SPEA FIRE GL board in order to be able fully utilize this.
  136.  
  137.   The display refresh rate for graphical user interface operating
  138.   systems (Windows [95], OS/2 and Windows NT) is selected using
  139.   the corresponding program V7SETUP, V7SETOS2 and V7SETNT.
  140.  
  141.   Extended tuning (with display image positioning) and the selection
  142.   of the display refresh rate for DOS programs such as AutoCAD for 
  143.   DOS, is made with the program SPEAtune (SPTUNE).
  144.  
  145. Note:
  146.   SPTUNE is exclusively programmed for use under DOS operating system.
  147.   
  148.                  *** IMPORTANT ***
  149.  
  150.   Only use settings that your monitor supports. If you use the monitor
  151.   outside the specified ratings then it may suffer permanent damage!
  152.   If you change the monitor then you must compare the ratings first
  153.   and should reconfigure with SPTUNE accordingly!

  156. 4. Known Restrictions
  157. ======================
  158.   (1) It is generally not possible to use more than one active VGA
  159.   board simultaneously in a PC.
  160.   If your PC has a VGA adapter on the motherboard and you wish to use
  161.   the SPEA FIRE GL, then you must deactivate the VGA adapter in the
  162.   PC first.
  163.  
  164.   (2) Some applications, e.g. Windows 3.1, Word ..., offer an internal
  165.   configuration program which in turn offer 'Video 7 ...' drivers as
  166.   the VGA device.
  167.   These can NOT be used for the SPEA FIRE GL!
  168.   To achieve optimal driver configuration in cases like these, proceed
  169.   with the installation and configuration of driver software as 
  170.   described in the manual of the SPEA FIRE GL.

  172. 5. Motherboard Compatibility
  173. ============================
  174.   The SPEA FIRE GL is only working in motherboards which supports the
  175.   PCI v.2.0 (or higher) standard. This specification supports and 
  176.   initializes correct such "multi function devices" like our SPEA FIRE GL.
  177.   Problems with incomplete PCI v.2.0 support may arise in older
  178.   80486-based PCs. The Glint-Chip from 3D-Labs may be not detected and
  179.   initialized, so that our software doesn't work fine. Remedy may have a
  180.   system-BIOS update of your motherboard-BIOS supplied by your
  181.   motherboard-manufacturer or dealer. Following motherboards are
  182.   successfully tested at SPEA:

  197. 6. Notes on Applications
  198. =========================
  199.   Seperate README files exist for the applications supported by the
  200.   SPEA FIRE GL. These contain information on last-minute changes
  201.   that could not be included in the manual. They also contain 
  202.   information concerning known restrictions.
  203.   The README files are also copied to the \SPEA\GDC directory during 
  204.   the software installation when you select a driver. The files have
  205.   the extension .DOC.
  206.   You can view the respective README files by entering SHOW *.DOC.

  214. 7. Corrections to the Manual
  215. =============================
  216.   SPEA FIRE GL and SPEA Ergonomic Modes up to 160 Hz:
  217.   -------------------------------------------------------
  218.   The BIOS of your SPEA FIRE GL supports all available resolutions
  219.   up to a frequency of 75 Hz. An additional software solution (SPTUNE)
  220.   also makes refresh rates up to 160 Hz possible. An overview of the
  221.   frequencies available can be found in the file BIOS.TXT.
  222.   Important: the SPEA ergonomic modes with frequencies over 75 Hz are
  223.   only active if the program 'V7HFREQ' has been called with the parameter
  224.   't'. For this reason, a corresponding call is placed in your
  225.   AUTOEXEC.BAT file during the installation.
  226.  
  227.   S3TEST:
  228.   -------
  229.   S3TEST is a program provided to test the S3 part of your graphics board
  230.   for errors. It check whether the board is correctly functioning together
  231.   with your PC. During the testing phase (which can take a few seconds),
  232.   a number of different color patterns will be displayed on your monitor
  233.   (these are different according to the board being tested). The patterns
  234.   created are the result of technical tests and do NOT represent an error
  235.   on your board. An accurate result is shown at the end of the test routine.

  240.   Technical support for the installation and configuration of SPEA
  241.   graphic boards and multimedia products, as well as software updates
  242.   (or optional software packages) are available:
