Panasonic PCMCIA CD_ROM player Model KXL-D720
(September 4, 1995)
This disk contains files to enable you to use your KXL-D720 CD-ROM Drive
with Windows 95 in protected mode. Directions outlined below may help
if you are unfamiliar with the procedure.
The files on this disk (or what you revived).
D720MINI.MPD : A miniport driver for Windows95
D720.INF : Setup sequence direction file for Windows95
README.TXT : This file
To Set the drive up, follow these instructions:
1. Copy all files to a formatted 3.5" diskette.
(probably done already if your reading this)
2. You should be running Windows 95 on your notebook.
3. PCMCIA Services Need to be activated. (Look in control panel of Windows)
4. If you have previously installed the KXL-D720 DOS driver (real mode
driver) you should remove it from the system before you install this
protected mode driver. Depending on how the KXL-D720 CD-ROM drive was
originally installed the removal procedure will vary. Please consult
your Operating Instructions for the KXL-D720 for file names.
5. To remove the statements from to your AUTOEXEC.BAT & CONFIG.SYS files
choose run from the Win95 start menu. Type "SYSEDIT" in the command line
box. (Any other text editor can also be used).
6. Delete the necessary lines from both the AUTOEXEC.BAT & CONFIG.SYS files
and save the changes.
7. Restart Windows 95
8. There are different ways to accomplish this, this will explain one way
to install the protected mode driver.
9. Insert D720 SCSI PCcard and connect the KXL-D720 CDROM player, Turn the
Power on !!!!
Please note that you should have Win 95 32 Bit Socket Services installed
on your system also.
10. From the Win 95 control panel , choose add new hardware, follow the "ADD
NEW HARDWARE WIZARD" instructions.
11. When asked if you want Win 95 to find the hardware , click the radio
button NO.
12. On next screen of the Wizard, scroll to the selection Other Devices, and
click Next.
13. Click on the Button "Have Disk" (the driver disk should be in one of your
floppy drives) Select that drive, and click "next".
14. The device KXLC001 will appear in the next Wizard dialog box, select it
and click next 2 times then finish.
15. The drive should appear on the system immediately. (You may have to
re-boot on some systems.)
Alternate Method A:
Windows 95 Plug & Play driver installation
1. Boot Windows 95 (without the KXL-D720 PC-CARD inserted)
2. Insert the KXL-D720 PC-CARD into the PCMCIA slot
Windows 95 system will detect a new PC-CARD is inserted,
and the setup window will appear with the following:
*Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer.
*Do not install a driver (Windows will not prompt you again).
*Select from a list of alternate drivers.
3. Select "*Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer."
Windows 95 system requires setup diskette.
4. Insert the setup diskette into drive A.
Windows 95 system copies the miniport driver and registers the
KXL-D720 information to the Plug & Play information.
Windows 95 system restarts the computer.
5. The additional CD-ROM drive ICON will appear in "My Computer" window,
provided the KXL-D720 CD-ROM drive is connected with the PC-CARD to
the system and the power is on to the drive while Windows 95 starts
up.
Alternate Method B:
1. In Windows 95, open CONTROL PANEL then ADD NEW HARDWARE.
2. Click NEXT then choose NO to "search for new hardware".
3. Windows 95 will ask what type of hardware you would like to install.
Scroll down to and click on SCSI CONTROLLERS and click NEXT.
4. Then choose HAVE DISK. Insert the KXL-D720 Windows 95 driver diskette in
Drive A and choose OK.
5. Windows will report the "KXLC001" (which is the PCMCIA SCSI controller)
Choose NEXT.
6. Click NEXT again then Click FINISH.
7. When prompted by the PCCARD WIZARD, select No and select NEXT. Select
NEXT again.
8. Choose YES to shut down and restart. When the system restarts, Windows 95
will now be able to detect the CD-ROM and install the necessary software
for it. Upon completion, the KXL-D720 will be operating utilizing only
Windows 95 drivers.
