  117. Even though you may have just received your Number Nine software, 
  118. newer versions may be available. Free upgrades are provided to 
  119. all Number Nine customers on the Number Nine Bulletin Board 
  120. System (BBS).
  121.  
  122. To see if you have the latest version, compare the version number
  123. of your software (on the label of the provided diskette or in text 
  124. file VERSION.TXT on disk 1) with the version number of the 
  125. corresponding software on the BBS.

  148. The BBS has a separate file area for each Number Nine product.  
  149. The latest driver updates can be found in each product's file 
  150. area, and files of general interest (shareware, etc.) can be 
  151. found in the General library.  An E-mail system is available 
  152. for technical questions about Number Nine products or about 
  153. the BBS in general.  A complete listing of available files can 
  154. be downloaded by invoking the "Download List of Files" command 
  155. from any file library menu.

  157. On the US BBS, RIP graphics are supported, and a RIP compatible 
  158. terminal program is available in the General library 
  159. (RIPTM154.ZIP).

  161. Many files are self-extracting, but some files will require the 
  162. latest version of PKUNZIP to decompress.  PKUNZIP is available 
  163. in the General library (filename PKZ204G.EXE), and can also be 
  164. found on most on-line services such as Compuserve and America 
  165. Online.

  201.     1.  You must have OS/2 DOS Support installed in order to 
  202.     install this driver.  You must also have OS/2 REXX Support
  203.     installed.
  204.  
  205.     2.  The OS/2 ATTRIB command is used during installation. If 
  206.     you elected not to install the OS/2 System Utility 
  207.     Programs or you have deleted the ATTRIB command, you must
  208.     use Selective Install to restore the ATTRIB command before 
  209.     continuing.

  212. INSTALLATION FROM DISKETTE

  237. This video accelerator driver release is compatible with OS/2 2.1 
  238. or later.  Do not attempt to install it on previous versions of 
  239. OS/2.
  240.  
  241. To install this #9 video accelerator driver from diskette:
  242.  
  243.     1.  Place diskette 1 into drive A (or another diskette 
  244.     drive).
  245.  
  246.     2.  Open the "OS/2 System - Icon View" folder.
  247.  
  248.     3.  Open the "Command Prompts" folder.
  249.  
  250.     4.  Open an "OS/2 Full-Screen" or "OS/2 Window" session.
  251.  
  252.     5.  At the OS/2 command prompt, type the following command:
  253.  
  254.          [INSTALLDRIVE:]\S3INST [INSTALLDRIVE:] [BOOTDRIVE:]
  255.  
  256.          where: [INSTALLDRIVE:] is the diskette drive
  257.             [BOOTDRIVE:] is the drive where OS/2 is installed
  258.  
  259.          Example:   A:\S3INST A: C:
  260.     
  261.     This command will copy all necessary files to the OS/2 
  262.     drive.
  263.     
  264.     If you are prompted to replace the files DISPLAY.DLL and
  265.     PMVIOP.DLL, answer "NO". These files should NOT be 
  266.     overwritten.
  267.  
  268.     6.  Exit the "OS/2 Full-Screen" or "OS/2 Window" session.
  269.  
  270.     7.  Remove the diskette from the diskette drive, perform a 
  271.     shutdown, and then restart the system.
  272.  
  273.     8.  Open the "OS/2 System" folder.
  274.  
  275.     9.  Open the "System Setup" folder.
  276.  
  277.     10. Open the "Display Driver Install" (DSPINSTL) object.
  278.  
  279.     DSPINSTL determines the hardware configuration by creating
  280.     the SVGADATA.PMI file on the drive where the OS2 directory
  281.     is located.
  282.  
  283.     NOTE:   If the Display Driver Install object is 
  284.         missing, refer to the "Important Note For 
  285.         BBS Users" at the top of this section.
  286.     
  287.     11. When the Display Driver Install window appears, "Super 
  288.     Video Graphics Array (S3)" should be the default choice 
  289.     for Primary Display. 
  290.     Select the Primary Display check box.
  291.     Select "OK".
  292.  
  293.     12. A list of supported adapters in the Primary Display Driver 
  294.     List window.
  295.     Select "32 Bit S3 Display Drivers".
  296.     Select "OK".
  297.  
  298.     13. When the Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility window 
  299.     appears: 
  300.     Select "Install Using Display Adapter Utility Program". 
  301.     Select "OK".
  302.       
  303.     14. Put in diskette #1. In the Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility 
  304.     Location window, type the following command:
  305.  
  306.          [INSTALLDRIVE:]\REFRESH.EXE
  307.  
  308.          where: [INSTALLDRIVE:] is the diskette drive       
  309.  
  310.          Example: A:\REFRESH.EXE
  311.  
  312.     Select "OK".
  313.         
  314.     15. When the 9FX Vision330 Refresh Rate Utility window appears you will be able to select refresh rates by monitor resolution. 
  315.  
  316.       NOTE: Setting refresh rates higher than your monitor's 
  317.         design specifications may cause damage. Consult 
  318.         your monitor's documentation for maximum resolution 
  319.         and refresh rate information.
  320.  
  321.     After selecting appropriate refresh rates for your monitor, 
  322.     select "EXIT".
  323.  
  324.     16. When prompted to save changes in AUTOEXEC.BAT, select "NO".     
  325.  
  326.     The screen will turn black momentarily while your display 
  327.     is checked. If you have an energy-saving monitor, you may 
  328.     need to turn it off and then on again. 
  329.  
  330.     17. When the source directory pop-up window appears 
  331.     -select Install. 
  332.  
  333.     When prompted
  334.     - insert diskette 2, select OK and wait until the installation 
  335.       program finishes transferring files to your hard disk.
  336.  
  337.     18. Remove the diskette from the diskette drive, perform a 
  338.     shutdown, and then restart the system.
  339.  
  340.     19. When the installation is complete, do the following:
  341.      a.  Open "OS/2 System".
  342.      b.  Open "System Setup".
  343.      c.  Open the "System" object.  The Screen page of the 
  344.          Settings notebook lists all the supported resolutions
  345.          for your configuration.
  346.      d.  Select a resolution; then, close the notebook.
  347.  
  348.     20.  Perform a shutdown; then, restart the system.

  354. NOTE:    After installing this driver release, if you must 
  355.      re-install OS/2, be sure to delete the following 
  356.      files from your \OS2\INSTALL directory FIRST!!!
  357.

  359.             GXE64.DSC 
  360.             GXE64P.DSC
  361.  
  362.      The OS/2 installation will not complete if these 
  363.      files are present.
  364.  
  365. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  366. CHANGING VERTICAL REFRESH RATES
  367. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  368.  
  369. This section is intended for those users who have already installed 
  370. the Number Nine OS/2 Display Driver for the 9FX Vision330 and have set 
  371. refresh rates using the 9FX Vision330 Refresh Rate Utility.
  372.  
  373. To select new refresh rates:
  374.  
  375.     1.  Open the "OS/2 System - Icon View" folder.
  376.  
  377.     2.  Open the "Command Prompts" folder.
  378.  
  379.     3.  Open a "DOS Full-Screen" session.
  380.         
  381.     4.  Insert diskette 1 into your diskette drive.
  382.     Diskette must be labeled S3 DRV1 and must contain the 
  383.     file REFRESH.EXE.
  384.  
  385.     5.  Type [DRIVE:]\REFRESH.EXE and hit <Enter>.
  386.     
  387.          where: [DRIVE:] is your diskette drive
  388.  
  389.          Example:   A:\REFRESH.EXE  
  390.         
  391.     6.  When the 9FX Vision330 Refresh Rate Utility window appears you 
  392.     will be able to select refresh rates by monitor resolution. 
  393.  
  394.       NOTE: Setting refresh rates higher than your monitor's 
  395.         design specifications may cause damage. Consult 
  396.         your monitor's documentation for maximum resolution 
  397.         and refresh rate information.
  398.  
  399.     After selecting appropriate refresh rates for your monitor, 
  400.     select "EXIT".

  402.     7.  When prompted to save changes in AUTOEXEC.BAT, select "NO".

  404.     8.  In your hard drive's \OS2 directory, at the prompt, type the 
  405.     following command:   
  406.     
  407.     SVGA[space]ON[space]DOS 
  408.     
  409.     Press <Enter>.
  410.     This will create file SVGADATA.DOS.
  411.      
  412.     9.  In the \OS2 directory:
  413.  
  414.     - Copy SVGADATA.PMI to SVGADAT.SAV.
  415.     - Then, copy SVGADATA.DOS to SVGADATA.PMI.
  416.  
  417.     Exit the DOS Session. 
  418.  
  419.     10. Remove the diskette from your diskette drive.
  420.  
  421.     11. Perform a shutdown; then, restart your system.
  422.  
  423.  
  424. NOTE:   The REFRESH.EXE file may be copied to a directory and then
  425.     run from your hard drive. 
  426.  
  427.  
  428. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  429. FUNCTIONAL RESTRICTIONS
  430. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  431.  
  432.  
  433. o  With the program VPIC6 under FS DOS, GIFs cannot be viewed in 
  434.    the 1280x1024 resolution. 
  435.  
  436. o  Users of the software motion video feature of MMPM/2 
  437.    should expect satisfactory results in 256-color modes. 
  438.    However, in 65,536 color modes, users of the feature will 
  439.    experience unusual results.  An OS/2 pervasive fix package 
  440.    will be available electronically from IBM.
  441.  
  442.    In addition, the software motion video feature will take 
  443.    advantage of a 1MB aperture on video adapters and systems
  444.    where it is available to improve the performance of video
  445.    playback in 65,536 color modes.  
  446.  
  447.    For those systems with non-standard locations, the actual 
  448.    physical address of the aperture must be provided in the 
  449.    following CONFIG.SYS statement:
  450.  
  451.            SET VIDEO_APERTURE=xxxh
  452.  
  453.    where "xxx" is a hexadecimal value in units of 1MB, 
  454.    representing the actual physical address to map to the 
  455.    aperture. For PCI cards xxxh=880h. Therefore, the 
  456.    CONFIG.SYS statement should read: 
  457.  
  458.            SET VIDEO_APERTURE=880h
  459.  
  460. o  Context switching from Win-OS/2 full screen to OS/2 full screen may
  461.    produce a distorted text in OS/2 full screen.
  462.  
  463. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  464. BEFORE CONTACTING NUMBER NINE TECHNICAL SUPPORT
  465. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  466.  
  467. ò Installation Problems
  468.  
  469.     During the installation of this driver a DISPLAY.LOG file 
  470.     is created in the OS2\INSTALL directory.  This file 
  471.     identifies the OS/2 system files that were updated and
  472.     indicates whether the installation was successful. The 
  473.     contents of this file might be useful if you need to report
  474.     an installation problem to Number Nine Technical Support.
  475.  
  476.  
  477. ò OS/2 2.11 (or later) Installation 
  478.  
  479.     Note that this release includes patches to the OS/2 2.1 
  480.     kernel and virtual Windows driver, which are required to 
  481.     support the new 32-bit S3 driver architecture.  
  482.  
  483.     If you are running OS/2 2.11 the patches in this package 
  484.     are not necessary.  Thus, under OS/2 2.11, or with the 
  485.     Pentium patches under OS/2 2.1, the installation program's
  486.     attempt to patch the kernel will fail.  This failure will 
  487.     be recorded in DISPLAY.LOG, and is normal!  It does not 
  488.     indicate a failure to correctly install the drivers.
  489.  
  490. ò Resolution Availability and DRAM
  491.  
  492.     If you change the amount of DRAM on your 9FX Vision330, you will 
  493.     need to:
  494.  
  495.     1. Set your 9FX Vision330 to run in VGA mode by running the 
  496.        appropriate SETVGA procedure for your OS/2 version.
  497.        (see NEW SETVGA PROCEDURE section in this README.TXT)  
  498.  
  499.     2. Then, re-install the Number Nine OS/2 Display Driver for 
  500.        the 9FX Vision330 (per the INSTALLATION FROM DISKETTE section 
  501.        in this README.TXT). 
  502.

  517. To bring up a menu that allows VGA mode to be selected, depress 
  518. the Alt-F1 keys when restarting your system. 
  519.

  522. OS/2 2.1 and 2.11 Users:
  523. --------------
  524.  
  525. Users of OS/2 2.1 or 2.11 can use one of the following procedures, 
  526. instead of the SETVGA command, to return to VGA mode.
  527.  
  528. NOTE:   If your display is out of sync, start OS/2 using the OS/2
  529.     Installation Diskette. Insert Diskette 1 when prompted, 
  530.     then press Esc to access a command prompt.  Follow the 
  531.     instructions below to reset your display mode.
  532.  
  533. o  If you installed OS/2 from diskettes:
  534.  
  535.     1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL directory.  If
  536.     it is, go to step 2.  If it is not, insert OS/2 
  537.     Installation Diskette 8 and unpack RSPDSPI.EXE with the 
  538.     following command:
  539.  
  540.     C:\OS2\UNPACK A:\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  541.  
  542.     where:  A: is the drive containing OS/2 Installation 
  543.            Diskette 8
  544.         C: is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed
  545.  
  546.     2.  Type C: then press Enter.
  547.     3.  Type CD C:\OS2\INSTALL then press Enter.
  548.     4.  Type RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:A:\ /T:C: then press 
  549.     Enter.

  551.     /T:C: where C: is the drive where OS/2 is installed
  552.     /S:A: where A: is the diskette drive you use to install 
  553.           OS/2
  554.  
  555. o  If you installed OS/2 from CD-ROM or a LAN:
  556.  
  557.      1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL directory.  If
  558.      it is, go to step 2.  If it is not, unpack RSPDSPI.EXE 
  559.      with the following command:
  560.  
  561.      C:\OS2\UNPACK E:\DISK_8\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  562.  
  563.      where:  C: is the drive where OS/2 is installed
  564.          E: is the CD-ROM or LAN drive
