  2. This file contains very important information that you should know
  3. before installing Plug'n'Scan. 
  4.  
  5. 1. PCMCIA Software Information
  6. If you have installed the PCMCIA software, such as SystemSoft's 
  7. CardSoft, then Mustek PCMCIA client driver will enable the PCMCIA 
  8. scanner interface card through the PCMCIA software. If you don't have 
  9. the PCMCIA software, the Mustek PCMCIA client driver will directly 
  10. access hardware to enable the PCMCIA scanner interface card. In this 
  11. case, Intel 82365 Personal Interface Controller(PCIC) or its compatible 
  12. controller is necessary for your computer.

  15. 2. Mustek PCMCIA Client Driver
  16. During the installation of Mustek TWAIN Data Source, a Mustek 
  17. PCMCIA client driver will be installed in to your computer and a device
  18. line that specifies the Mustek PCMCIA client driver will be 
  19. automatically added to the CONFIG.SYS  file. The Mustek PCMCIA 
  20. client driver provides the IRQ level and I/O address for the scanner driver.
  21. However,  you may need to change the IRQ or I/O address setting to 
  22. avoid a hardware conflict.

  24. 3. Change Configuration Settings
  25. In the CONFIG.SYS file, the correct syntax for the Mustek PCMCIA
  26. client driver device line is as follows:
  27.  
  28. DEVICE=[drive:\][path-directory\]mustek.exe In Pn 
  29.  
  30. where:
  31. [drive:\][path-directory\]: the drive and subdirectory where the scanner 
  32.                                           river is located.
  33.  
  34. [In]:  the IRQ level. The available n is 5, 7, 9, 10, 11(default), 12, 15.
  35.  
  36. [Pn]: the I/O address. The available n for I/O address is 228,
  37.          2A8(default) and 3A8.
  38.  
  39. 4. Multiple Configuration
  40. If your CONFIG.SYS is multiple-configured, it is necessary to move the 
  41. device line of the Mustek PCMCIA client driver to a proper section after 
  42. the PCMCIA software. Otherwise, the PCMCIA scanner interface card 
  43. will not be initialized properly.

  45. 5. Calibrate the Scanner
  46. For best scanning result, we recommend that you calibrate the scanner 
  47. the very first time you use it. The calibration procedure involves 
  48. scanning a white sheet of paper and adjusting the Brightness Control 
  49. until you get a "Calibration OK" message. After this you don't need to 
  50. calibrate again until you notice a significant decrease in scan quality.

  52. To calibrate the scanner, the steps are:
  53.  
  54. 1. Set the Brightness Control of your scanner to the middle position.
  55.  
  56. 2. In the Hand Scanner dialog box, click the "Preference" button. The
  57.     Preference dialog box appears.
  58.  
  59. 3. Click the "Calibration" button and follow all onscreen instructions.
