  7. Maximus 3.01 is a flexible bulletin board package for the DOS and OS/2
  8. operating systems.  Version 3 is a major upgrade from previous
  9. versions of Maximus.  Among other features, it includes:
  10.  
  11.  * MEX, an advanced extension language including many advanced
  12.    language features, such as dynamic strings, structures,
  13.    functions, pass-by-reference arguments, and more.
  14.  
  15.  * Support for multi-level, hierarchical message and file areas.
  16.    Maximus supports an unlimited number of message and file areas.
  17.  
  18.  * A message tracking system that allows organizations to effectively
  19.    track problem reports and ensure that problems get answered on a
  20.    timely basis.
  21.  
  22.  * Internal support for RIP graphics, including a ready-made set of
  23.    RIP graphics icons and screens.
  24.  
  25.  * Native support for DOS and OS/2.
  26.

  39. Obtaining the DOS and OS/2 versions of Maximus
  40. ----------------------------------------------

  42. The DOS and OS/2 versions of Maximus can be found in the following

  46. max301r.zip - DOS executables
  47. max301c.zip - common executables (required for both DOS and OS/2)

  59. Documentation offer for noncommercial users

  62. Lanius sells an official printed and bound copy of the Maximus
  63. manual.  This is normally only sold with a licensed copy of the
  64. program, but we are now allowing noncommercial users to order a copy
  65. of the manual separately.

  67. The printed manual is 466 pages long, perfect-bound (glued back
  68. binding), dimensions 7" by 9", with a glossy black and red cover.

  74. Maximus in commercial environments
  75. ----------------------------------

  77. Maximus may be used free of charge by noncommercial users (with no
  78. strings attached).

  80. However, you must purchase a license before using Maximus in a
  81. commercial environment.

  101. Beta Win32 version of Maximus
  102. -----------------------------

  104. We have now made available a public beta of the Win32 version of
  105. Maximus for Windows NT and Windows 95.
  106.  
  107. This beta is contained in the max301n.zip archive.  You can obtain
  108. this archive from the support BBS on +1-613-389-8315.  We will also
  109. try to make this file available on the SimTel Windows NT archive
  110. site on the Internet.

  112. However, since the Win32 version is in beta, we make no guarantees
  113. regarding its reliability or performance.  We also do not
  114. necessarily guarantee that it will become an officially-supported
  115. product.

  118. Documentation errata
  119. --------------------
  120.  
  121. - Section 6.5 - External Program Translation Characters
  122.  
  123.   When using the "%L" parameter, the resulting "-pX" text is
  124.   actually one less than the port number.  For example,
  125.   0=COM1, 1=COM2, and so on.
  126.  
  127. - Section 8.13 - Session Monitor
  128.  
  129.   The SM program accepts an optional parameter giving the name of
  130.   the pipe on the server machine.  To run SM from a workstation, you
  131.   must specify the full MCP pipe name, such as:
  132.  
  133.         SM \\server\pipe\maximus\mcp
  134.  
  135. - Section 15.3 - input_ch() function
  136.  
  137.   When using the CINPUT_SCAN flag, the extended keystrokes will
  138.   actually be returned in a single call to input_ch().  When an
  139.   extended key is entered by the user, the lower 8 bits of the
  140.   return coded will be 0, and the upper 8 bits will be the scan code
  141.   of the key.

  143. - Section 15.3 - readln() function
  144.  
  145.   In fact, readln() returns -1 (not 0) when end-of-file is
  146.   encountered.  A return code of -1 means that either an error
  147.   occurred or end-of-file was reached.
  148.  
  149. - Appendix G: SCANBLD commands in batch file
  150.  
  151.   The commands given in the sample batch file to run SCANBLD are
  152.   incorrect.  To correct the examples, simply remove the "user.bbs
  153.   area.dat" portion of command.  For example, the "scan" portion
  154.   of the WFC batch file should look like this:
  155.  
  156.     :scan
  157.     rem * This command should invoke your scanner. For example:
  158.     squish out squash -fEchoToss.Log
  159.     scanbld user.bbs area.dat local matrix @echotoss.log
  160.     goto loop
  161.

  163. Upgrading from Maximus version 3.00
  164. -----------------------------------
  165.  
  166. Simply run the installation program and select the "upgrade" option.
  167. The installation program will scan your Maximus directory, and if it
  168. detects a MAX.EXE or MAXP.EXE that matches the release version of
  169. Maximus 3.00, it will assume that you are upgrading from 3.00 and
  170. perform the upgrade accordingly.
  171.  
  172. The 3.00 to 3.01 upgrade should be painless.  The installation program
  173. will not modify anything except the executables in your \MAX
  174. directory.
  175.  
  176. Maximus 3.01 is only a maintenance upgrade, so no new features were
  177. added between 3.00 and 3.01.  However, the 3.01 upgrade fixes most of
  178. the common problems encountered in the 3.00 release.
  179.

  181. Upgrading from Maximus version 2.x
  182. ----------------------------------
  183.  
  184. To upgrade an existing Maximus 2.x installation, you must follow the
  185. steps given below.  (To install a new version of Maximus, please see
  186. section 3 of the program documentation.)
  187.  
  188. 1. Back up your existing system.
  189.  
  190. 2. For DOS only, ensure that you have at least 560k of free
  191.    conventional memory.  Maximus itself requires much less than this
  192.    amount to operate normally, but the install program needs at
  193.    least 560k to compile some of the system files.
  194.  
  195. 3. Run the install program and select "upgrade".  Specify the path
  196.    to your existing Maximus installation.  The install program will
  197.    install the new executables, upgrade your control files, and
  198.    modify your configuration to make it compatible with Maximus
  199.    3.0.
  200.  
  201. 4. After the installation program has converted your system, look
  202.    through the control files (particularly msgarea.ctl and
  203.    filearea.ctl) to see if the conversion program has flagged any
  204.    problems.
  205.  
  206. 5. Change to your \max\olr\dats directory and run "del *.*". This
  207.    will cause a one-time loss of the users' off-line reader area
  208.    mappings.  Users who upload packets which are replies to
  209.    messages created by Max 2.x will be prompted to enter a new area
  210.    when uploading those packets.
  211.  
  212. 6. Change to your \max directory and run "cvtusr -p".
  213.  
  214. 7. Change to your \max directory and run "fb -a".
  215.  
  216. 8. If you are running Maximus on a network, ensure that the
  217.    "SET MAXIMUS=C:\MAX\MAX.PRM" statement exists in the
  218.    AUTOEXEC.BAT (or CONFIG.SYS for OS/2) on all machines that
  219.    run Maximus nodes.
  220.  
  221.    The install program will automatically add this statement when
  222.    you run the upgrade, but if you want to run Maximus on other
  223.    machines on a network that have separate CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT
  224.    files, you must insert this keyword manually.
  225.  
  226. This completes the automatic upgrade procedure.  For information on
  227. manually upgrading an existing copy of Maximus, please see
  228. UPGRADE.TXT.
  229.  
  230.  
  231. Maximus 2.x to 3.x upgrade notes
  232. --------------------------------
  233.  
  234. 1. Maximus 3.0 is not compatible with language files from
  235. Maximus 2.0.  The install program will automatically comment out all
  236. of your 2.0 language files and install the new English language from
  237. the 3.0 distribution.
  238.  
  239. 2. Maximus 3.0 enables password encryption by default.  To turn off
  240. password encryption, please add the "No Password Encryption" keyword
  241. to the System section of MAX.CTL before any users log on to the new
  242. 3.0 system.
  243.  
  244. 3. Maximus no longer supports the "-z" command-line parameter. The
  245. OS/2 PMSnoop utility has been replaced by SM.  OS/2 users must
  246. modify their .cmd files to remove all references to the "-z"
  247. parameter and PMSnoop before completing the upgrade.
  248.  
  249. 4. The command-line parameters for SCANBLD, MR and FBP have changed.
  250. Please read the documentation and update your BAT/CMD files to use
  251. the new format.
  252.  
  253.  
  254. Maximus 2.x compatibility notes
  255. -------------------------------
  256.  
  257. 1. MaxiBank version 2 is not compatible with Maximus 3.0.  Tests
  258. have shown that MaxiBank does not correctly handle the new user
  259. file.  In particular, it randomly grants SysOp access to users who
  260. access the time bank.  We strongly suggest that you disable MaxiBank
  261. before upgrading to Maximus 3.0.  (The MexBank MEX program, included
  262. in the Maximus distribution, can be used to add a "time bank"
  263. feature to Maximus 3.0.)
  264.  
  265. 2. The new version of MAXPIPE cannot spawn .cmd files directly or
  266. execute internal OS/2 shell commands.  If you need to do this,
  267. simply add a "cmd /c" before the name of the program to execute.
  268. For example, given the following line in MENUS.CTL:

  270.    Xtern_Dos       maxpipe.exe_%P_test.cmd         Normal "Run Test"
  271.  
  272. You must change it to this to make it work correctly with the new
  273. MaxPipe:

  278. Using Maximus with LANtastic for OS/2
  279. -------------------------------------
  280.  
  281. The OS/2 version of LANtastic has known problems with named pipes.
  282. If you run Maximus-OS/2 on a LANtastic network and see "SYSxxxx:
  283. DosTransactNPipe" messages in the log, please contact Artisoft to
  284. obtain the named pipe patches.
  285.

  287. File format information

  290. The STRUCTS.ZIP file (as created by the install program in \MAX)
  291. contains the C-based structure definitions for a number of
  292. Maximus-specific files.
