  8. ---- About AbiWord

  10. AbiWord is an "Open Source" word processor.  (If you would like more
  11. information about the concept of Open Source, you might start looking
  12. at www.opensource.org.)

  14. Because AbiWord is Open Source, it is freely distributable and
  15. available for use by anyone, without restrictions.  With AbiWord,
  16. there is no need to worry about piracy.  We encourage you to make as
  17. many copies as you like and to give them to your friends and
  18. colleagues.

  20. Note that AbiWord is not "shareware".  You are under no moral or legal
  21. obligation to pay anyone for this right to use this program.

  23. If you are not familiar with this kind of software, please rest
  24. assured that there is no catch.  AbiWord is free, and it will always
  25. be free.  It is developed in a public fashion, by members of the
  26. software community from all over the world, communicating and
  27. collaborating together via the Internet.

  32. However, due to the lack of time and people to contribute to the
  33. documentation effort, it is far from complete, and does not cover all
  34. features, including many of the new features available in the 2.0
  35. release series.

  37. Another, sometimes more useful place to get help is the AbiWord user
  38. mailing list <http://www.abisource.com/support/help/maillist.phtml>.
  39. Users are strongly encouraged to join the mailing list in order to
  40. ask and answer questions freely.  Please keep discussion limited to
  41. AbiWord related subjects.

  43. Also, IRC provides a more realtime medium of communication, and can
  44. elicit more immediate response, depending on who's online and

  50. If you would like to join the community of people who are developing
  51. AbiWord, there are lots of ways you can help, even if you are not a
  52. computer programmer.
  53.  
  54. If you are in fact a programmer, and would like to work on the
  55. project, see the developer information on our website, join the
  56. abiword-dev mailing list, and ask what needs to be done.  There are
  57. always features or ports which need attention.
  58. Be aware that because the site does not receive too much attention,
  59. http://www.abisource.com/developers/ is obsolete in some areas and
  60. you will probably find the developers on list and irc more helpful.

  62. If you are not a programmer, you can still join the abiword-dev
  63. mailing list and contribute in other ways.  The easiest way to help is
  64. to simply use the program and report any bugs you find.  A tool called
  65. Bugzilla is available on our website for exactly this purpose.
  66. Contributions can be easily made in the areas of documentation,
  67. site maintenance, quality assurance (bug-checking, a little harder),
  68. and product promotion.  Whatever you're good at, the friendly folks
  69. on abiword-dev are perfectly willing to find a use for it, and there's
  70. always plenty of work to be done.  We appreciate any help we can get.

  72. ---- Supported Platforms

  74. AbiWord is a multi-platform application, meaning that it was designed
  75. to work well on multiple types of computers and operating systems.
  76.  
  77. At the present time, AbiWord is supported on Windows (including
  78. Windows 95 through Windows XP), MacOS (see note below), Linux, a
  79. variety of other UNIX-like systems (including everything from Solaris
  80. to *BSD to RTEMS), and QNX (though beware that there is currently only
  81. one active QNX-port developer).  The BeOS port is no longer actively
  82. maintained in AbiWord 2.0, but there are external parties that submit
  83. patches from time to time, so it may still be usable on BeOS.  If you
  84. can help us with any of these ports or provide and maintain a new one,
  85. you are more than welcome to.

  87. Other operating systems will likely be supported in the future.

  89. AbiWord's port to MacOS prior to OSX (Carbon) has been removed due to the
  90. extensive and unmet developer resource requirements.  However, the
  91. OSX (Cocoa) port is still under development and according to its
  92. maintainer, has reached a quite usable state, though it is not quite
  93. on par with the Unix port yet.
