  27.   **The Playa**
  28.  
  29.   The Playa is the media player of choice for DivX content. New features
  30.   include higher performance and visual quality, progressive download so
  31.   you can playback before the download is complete, and the ability to
  32.   play broken AVI files. From the people that brought you DivX(tm) video
  33.   technology.

  35.   **The DivX Codec**
  36.  
  37.   The DivX(tm) codec v4.12 is the latest and greatest release of DivX,
  38.   the best compression technology for high-resolution movies.  The DivX
  39.   codec (short for COmpression-DECompression) is becoming the standard
  40.   for high quality video over IP networks because it hits the sweet spot
  41.   between superior visual quality and small file size. With a broadband
  42.   connection, you can download a full-length feature film in the time it
  43.   takes to have a pizza delivered!

  45.   **The Validator**
  46.  
  47.   The Validator will check the directory of your choice for "Authentic"
  48.   DivX files. If it truly is a DivX file it will rename the file
  49.   extension to *.divx.  Why?  Well there is a ton of content encoded in
  50.   DivX and we know that this content is hard to find through search
  51.   engines because right now it uses the *.avi file extension which could
  52.   really be any codec.  We also know that there are individuals who
  53.   actually place "DivX" in the name of their files when they are truly
  54.   not DivX so that you will be more inclined to download it, since
  55.   "DivX" is known now as content that is encoded with High Quality. 
  56.   Well we want to make sure that content that is truly is DivX is easy
  57.   to find and that the DivX name lives on.

  60. Installation instructions
  61. -------------------------

  63.   To install the Playa, Codec and Validator, you should follow the
  64.   following simple steps:
  65.  
  66.   1. Copy the installer program (DivX4Bundle.exe) to a location on your
  67.      hard drive (e.g., C:\temp).
  68.   2. Run the installer program by double-clicking on the
  69.      deainstaller.exe icon.  
  70.   3. Follow the instructions of the installer program to install the
  71.      The Playa.  
  72.   4. Done! The Playa, CODEC, and Validator should be installed in your 
  73.      Systems directory.  
  74.   
  75.   **What files are installed?**: The Playa installer will install the
  76.   following files on your system:
  77.

  79. * divx.dll             (DivX Codec) 
  80. * divxdec.ax        (DivX Decoder Filter)

  86.   **Uninstalling the DivX Codec**: To remove the DivX Codec from your
  87.   system, you should use the "Add/Remove Programs" control panel in
  88.   Windows. To this by selecting "Start -> Settings -> Control Panel ->
  89.   Add/Remove Programs" from the Windows Start menu. In the listbox that
  90.   is presented to you, choose "DivX 4.0 Codec" and click "remove."

  275.   the word 'DivX'. On machines with installed Russian it is a 'TM' sign,
  276.   but there are lots of machines out there which do not have Russian
  277.   fonts :-)
