It is possible to install StarOffice 5.1 in addition to an existing earlier version of StarOffice. But if you later deinstall one of these StarOffice versions, you must run the respective StarOffice setup program after the deinstallation and choose the Repair option.
Make sure to dispose enough free disk space for your temp directory.
Due to technical reasons, certain services may not be able to be displayed, or may cause problems in the systray integration (display of running tasks in the TaskBar). In this case, you can deactivate this integration by calling the following from the StarOffice installation directory:
sointgr.exe -u
After restarting Windows, the service will not be reactivated. Enter the following to make it available again:
sointgr.exe -i
NOTE:
You should never just terminate the running sointgr service!
StarOffice communicates with language recognition software by means of the Microsoft Speech API. It should work well with all the language recognition systems that provide this interface. There may be differences in speed resulting from the software which cannot be traced back to StarOffice.
1. Dragon NaturallySpeaking 3.0
The tests carried out with this version have been very successful. The Microsoft Speech API needs to be installed to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking 3.0 under StarOffice. Initiate the dnsrdk.exe contained in the /misc/dragon directory of this CD (only contained in the CD version of StarOffice). You should then restart your system. Further information is to be found in the online help. StarOffice calls up the dialogs of the speech recognition software. The dialogs "Training", "Adjust Microphone" and "Lexicon" have not been implemented in Dragon NaturallySpeaking 3.0. The "Configuration" dialog causes Dragon NaturallySpeaking 3.0 to stall and, therefore, work in StarOffice cannot be continued.
2.Dragon NaturallySpeaking 3.5
This version needs the version 4 of Microsoft Speech API. This is not installed with the Dragon product. If this version has not already been installed on your computer it can be downloaded directly from the download section of the Microsoft website, www.microsoft.com and then installed on your computer. The exact product identification is "Microsoft SAPI Speech SDK 4.0a (x86). If you should encounter problems with the command mode of NaturallySpeaking 3.5 then we would recommend using the setting for simulating the command mode.
3. ViaVoice Gold und ViaVoice 98
ViaVoice Gold automatically supports the Microsoft Speech API. No further installation is necessary. Our test have shown that delays in speech recognition may occur in the Command Mode.
In Windows95 the dialer functions without any problems. If you can successfully use the original Windows dialer, then it will also function with StarOffice.
At the time of our testing, there were no Windows98 drivers available for various ISDN cards. With the respective Windows95 drivers, however, there may be difficulties when using Windows98. For example, we noticed that sometimes you cannot dial at all. Function errors may even arise after the deactivation.
To use the mail and news functions in StarOffice, enter your name and e-mail address in the dialog under Tools/Options/General. To get the most out of the provided templates for letters, faxes, etc., complete the user data. This information is only for your personal use, and you can specify if the program should use it or not. The dialog for entering your personal data is displayed during the installation.
IMPORTANT : Your name and e-mail address are automatically included in the header information of an e-mail. Remember that if no e-mail address is specified, you will not be able to send any mail.
To transfer an address book from StarOffice 4.0, simply copy the address.dbf file from the StarOffice 4.0 DATABASE folder into the StarOffice 5.1 DATABASE folder. Then, select the menu command Edit - Address Book. The address book will be automatically converted. If an error message appears when activating the address book, the address.dbf file might still be open. Before the conversion, make sure that no dialogs relating to database functionality are open. In the case of an error message, restart StarOffice 5.1 and select Edit - Address Book again.
