  139. 6. Problems installing this software:
  140. ****************************************************************
  141. If you encounter any errors during installation, please try the 
  142. following:
  143.  
  144.    i) From 'System Tools' group, Click the 'Scandisk' icon to
  145.       start.
  146.   ii) Follow instructions to examine your hard drive.
  147.  
  148. - If there is a problem in your hard drive, please consult your
  149.   hard disk management manual before attempting to fix the
  150.   problem. You may need to back up your data and other system files.
  151.  
  152. - Temporarily disabling other applications.
  153.   If you have any DOS TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) 
  154.   applications (e.g. virus shield) or Windows screen saver
  155.   running in the background, please temporarily disable it. You
  156.   can enable it again after the installation. 
  157.  
  158.   If you have other Windows applications running in the 
  159.   background, please close the ones you are not using. 
  160.  
  161. - Checking your system hardware.
  162.   Please check your system hardware and make sure your machine 
  163.   is functioning properly. Any IRQ or DMA device conflict may
  164.   create system instability, which will prevent software from
  165.   functioning normally.
  166.  
  167. ****************************************************************
  168. 7. Problems running this software:
  169. ****************************************************************
  170. - General Protection Faults.
  171.   General Protection Faults may occur when the system is
  172.   experiencing a conflict with particular software or hardware.
  173.  
  174.   A frequent cause of General Protection Faults is the use of
  175.   incompatible outdated video or audio drivers. Check to make
  176.   sure you are using the latest video drivers and audio drivers
  177.   available from your computer, video card or audio card 
  178.   manufacturer.
  179.  
  180. - Out-Of-Memory Errors.
  181.   If you encounter out-of-memory errors, there is probably not
  182.   enough memory available to the program. Consider doing the 
  183.   following to improve the memory usage.
  184.  
  185.   i) If your computer has only 8MB RAM, It is highly recommended
  186.      that the system be upgraded to 16MB RAM. The basic
  187.      memory requirement for this program is 8MB RAM; however, if
  188.      you have more physical memory inside your system, Windows
  189.      will be better able to manage memory usage. 
  190.  
  191.   ii) Run a virus scanner program to determine if your system is 
  192.       infected by computer viruses. Most of the computer viruses
  193.       consume memory space leaving insufficient memory for other
  194.       applications.
  195.  
  196.   iii) Close all unnecessary applications.  
  197.  
  198.   iv) Check the virtual memory setting. Try to use the Windows
  199.       recommended virtual memory size; it may help to solve the 
  200.       out-of-memory problem. Please consult the Windows User's
  201.       Guide for more information.
  202.  
  203.   v) You can also adjust any disk caching size to a minimum.
  204.      Please read "Adjusting disk caching size for better
  205.      performance" in Section 6 - Performance Issues below.
  206.  
  207. - Special software that is not supported.
  208.   This program does not support special software that assigns
  209.   custom functions to simulate the left, right or center mouse
  210.   button. These functions should not be used while running the
  211.   program.
  212.  
  213. - Windows 95 taskbar overlapping the program screen.
  214.   If you find that the Windows 95 taskbar is overlapping the
  215.   program screen, you can hide the taskbar by doing the following:
  216.  
  217.   i) Click the Start button.
  218.   ii) Choose Settings.
  219.   iii) Click Taskbar icon.
  220.   iv) Check the Auto Hide box.
  221.   v) Click the OK button.
  222.  
  223.   To see the taskbar again, move the mouse cursor to the edge
  224.   of your screen where your taskbar is located.
  225.  
  226. - Conflicts with Screen Savers.
  227.   It is recommended that you temporarily disable screen savers 
  228.   of any kind while running this program. Some screen savers may
  229.   have conflicts with the program and cause General Protection
  230.   Faults.
  231.  
  232. - Minimizing Microsoft Office Manager.
  233.   If you have Microsoft Office installed (either the standard or 
  234.   the professional version), you should minimize the Microsoft 
  235.   Office Manager (MOM) toolbar while running this program. The
  236.   presence of the toolbar can cause colors to be distorted.
  237.  
  238. - Problems with graphic displays.
  239.   If you see any unusual graphic displays from the program, please
  240.   use the standard font size or small font size in Windows 95. 
  241.   To change the font size:
  242.  
  243.   i) Double-click the 'Display' icon in 'Control Panel'.
  244.   ii) Click the 'Settings' tab.
  245.   iii) Click the 'Font size' pull down button to select 'Small
  246.        Fonts' or 'Standard Fonts'.
  247.   iv) Click 'OK' to confirm new settings.
  248.  
  249. ****************************************************************
  250. 8. Performance issues:
  251. ****************************************************************
  252. - The program runs slowly.
  253.   If you find this program runs slowly, your system may not be
  254.   optimized for the best performance. Consider doing the
  255.   following to improve the system performance:
  256.  
  257.   i) If your computer has only 8MB RAM, It is highly recommended
  258.      that the system be upgraded to 16MB RAM. The basic
  259.      memory requirement for this program is 8MB RAM, however, if
  260.      you have more physical memory inside your system, Windows
  261.      will have to rely less on virtual memory. Virtual memory
  262.      uses part of your hard drive as physical memory for Windows
  263.      applications, and creates rapid reading and writing to the
  264.      hard drive, which is the cause of delay.
  265.  
  266.   ii) Defragment ("clean up") your hard disk by running a 
  267.       defragmentation program.
  268.  
  269. - Adjusting disk caching size for better performance.
  270.   You can adjust caching size for your hard drive and CD-ROM drive
  271.   in 'File System Properties'.
  272.  
  273.   In 'Control Panel':
  274.   i) Double-click 'System' icon.
  275.   ii) Click 'Performance' tab.
  276.   iii) Click 'File System' button.
  277.   
  278.   click the 'CD-ROM' tab and you can adjust the supplemental cache
  279.   size. However, if your machine has only 8MB RAM, it is better to
  280.   have a smaller cache size for your CD-ROM drive, since the system
  281.   physical memory will be used for caching data from the CD-ROM drive.
  282.  
  283. - Tips for all computers.
  284.   Some computers may still be using a display driver, audio driver
  285.   and CD-ROM driver that came with the system. Those drivers are
  286.   probably the earliest releases, and may not be optimized for the
  287.   best data transfer and hardware utilization. Please check with the
  288.   manufacturer for up-to-date device drivers.
  289.  
  290.   Using the native Windows 95 32-bit device drivers for your sound
  291.   card and CD-ROM drive may increase performance on your machine and
  292.   make programs run smoother. 
  293.  
  294. ****************************************************************
  295. 9. CD-ROM issues:
  296. ****************************************************************
  297. - Increasing the CD-ROM drive reading performance.
  298.   Make sure the 'CD-ROM Optimized Access Pattern' in 'File System
  299.   Properties' is set up properly for the type of CD-ROM drive you
  300.   have. 
  301.  
  302.   e.g. if you have a Quad-speed CD-ROM drive, you should have the 
  303.        CD-ROM Optimized Access Pattern set up for Quad-speed or 
  304.        higher.
  305.  
  306.   Try to use the native Windows 95 CD-ROM driver for your CD-ROM
  307.   drive. Using the CD-ROM DOS driver in Windows 95 may result in
  308.   slower performance. The CD-ROM DOS driver may also impede full
  309.   32-bit file system access. The file system performance may vary
  310.   if it is not in full 32-bit pattern.
  311.  
  312.   Make sure that your CD-ROM drive is at least an MPC2-compatible.
  313.   An MPC2-compatible drive has an average seek time of less than
  314.   one second and can transfer data from the compact disc at 300k
  315.   per second while using less than 40% of the CPU bandwidth. Check 
  316.   the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive to make sure
  317.   it meets these requirements. Any CD-ROM drive below the
  318.   requirement will slow down the performance of the program.
  319.  
  320. - Errors reading from the CD-ROM drive.
  321.   If your system has errors reading from the CD-ROM drive, please
  322.   do the following checks:
  323.  
  324.   i) make sure the disc surface is clean.
  325.   ii) Look to find out if there are any visible scratches on the 
  326.       surface of the disc.
  327.   iii) check the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive 
  328.        or contact the company that supplied the drive in order
  329.        to find out if your CD-ROM drive is functioning properly.
  330.  
  331.   Do not remove the CD-ROM while the program is running.
  332.   If the program cannot find the data files that it needs from 
  333.   the CD disc, you will see a message that tells you that your 
  334.   computer cannot read from the drive letter of your CD-ROM.
  335.  
  336.   If you have an external CD-ROM drive, make sure the drive is 
  337.   connected to your computer, plugged in, and turned on. If you 
  338.   still see the error message after checking the points above, 
  339.   check the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive or 
  340.   contact the company that supplied the drive.
  341.  
  342. ****************************************************************
  343. 10. Video display issues:
  344. ****************************************************************
  345. - Problem with DirectX and incompatible video card driver.
  346.  
  347.   This program does not use DirectX. However, if you have Direct
  348.   Video and Direct X installed on your system, please make sure
  349.   that you are using a DirectX compatible video card driver. If
  350.   your system is using a video card driver which is incompatible
  351.   with DirectX, you may see unusual video playback and graphics
  352.   distortion in the program. You may also encounter system freezes
  353.   or errors loading program during program startup. In such cases,
  354.   please refer to your video card and DirectX documentation for
  355.   information on how to correct this problem.
  356.  
  357. - Basic display requirement.
  358.   The program requires a video card that supports at least
  359.   640 x 480 resolution with 256 colors.
  360.  
  361. - Problems when running in 16 bit, 24 bit or 32 bit color mode.
  362.   If there is a problem with graphics--such
  363.   as skipping frames and palette flashes, consider the following 
  364.   solutions:
  365.  
  366.   i) Set the screen resolution back to 640 x 480 with 8 bit color
  367.      mode (256 colors). Please consult your video card user's
  368.      manual on how to change your display resolutions.
  369.  
  370.   ii) Update the video card driver. Make sure you are using the 
  371.       most recent video driver available for Windows from your 
  372.       video card manufacturer; earlier releases of video drivers
  373.       may not be optimized for best display performance. Please
  374.       consult your video card user's manual on how to obtain the
  375.       latest driver. Most of the video card manufacturers provide
  376.       BBS, WWW and FTP sites for downloading updated drivers. 
  377.  
  378. ****************************************************************
  379. 11. Audio issues:
  380. ****************************************************************
  381. - Conflicts with other applications.
  382.   Audio problems can have many causes. Other applications that 
  383.   play sounds may interrupt sounds in this program.
  384.  
  385.   Most sound cards cannot play sounds from two different
  386.   applications simultaneously. In some cases, playing sounds from
  387.   two different applications simultaneously can result in a
  388.   system crash or freeze. However, a few applications that play 
  389.   sounds, such as some screen savers and desktop toys may remove
  390.   audio capability from all other Windows applications; if this
  391.   is the case, you may see this program start up without any
  392.   sound. If you suspect you have such a situation, quit the program
  393.   and turn off these applications before launching this program.
  394.  
  395. - Audio driver problems.
  396.   If you experience problems with audio, you may need to update
  397.   your sound card driver. It is always a good idea to use the 
  398.   most recent driver. Contact the manufacturer of your sound 
  399.   card to find out how to obtain a new driver.
  400.  
  401. - IBM Aptiva Mwave sound card.
  402.   If you own an IBM Aptiva Mwave sound card and are experiencing
  403.   'looping' or 'repeating' audio playback, please contact IBM to
  404.   update the sound card driver.
  405.  
  406. - Sounds play, but not very well.
  407.   Sounds that are distorted or "fuzzy" have several possible 
  408.   causes. The most likely one is simply that your speakers are 
  409.   not of high quality.
  410.  
  411.   It is also possible that the software settings on your sound 
  412.   card are causing distortion. For example, if the sound card 
  413.   volume or "WAVE file output" is set to near its maximum, it will
  414.   produce amplification distortion, just as it would on a stereo 
  415.   system. To find out how to change your sound card settings, 
  416.   check the documentation that came with your sound card.
  417.  
  418. - Sound does not play at all.
  419.   If you do not hear any sounds, make sure that the volume for 
  420.   your speakers is set to an audible level. 
  421.  
  422.   If the volume is set to an audible level, you can perform a 
  423.   simple test by using the Windows Media Player to play a .WAV 
  424.   file. If you still hear no sounds at all, something may be wrong
  425.   with your sound card setup. Check your sound card IRQ and DMA 
  426.   settings, make sure those settings are not in conflict with 
  427.   other hardware devices. Also, check to see that the driver is 
  428.   installed correctly and, if necessary, reinstall it. Refer to 
  429.   the documentation that came with your sound card for more 
  430.   information on installing audio drivers.
  431.  
  432.   Please note that this program requires a 16-bit sound card to
  433.   be installed and is not intended to run with any drivers that 
  434.   simulate the sound card functions, such as the unsupported
  435.   "PC Speaker" driver. Such drivers will in most cases not play
  436.   any sounds. If you have both a sound card and the PC Speaker
  437.   driver installed, it is preferable to un-install the PC Speaker
  438.   driver.
  439.  
  440. - Problem with Media Vision ProAudio Spectrum Basic/16/Studio (PAS16).
  441. If you have a Media Vision ProAudio Spectrum Basic/16/Studio (PAS16) 
  442. sound card and there is no sound or music in the game, please follow 
  443. instructions below to change the sound card configuration.
  444.  
  445.  1) Click Start.
  446.  2) Click Settings
  447.  3) Click Control Panel.
  448.  4) Double-click System icon.
  449.  5) Select Device Manager tab.
  450.  6) When you double-click "Sound, video and game controllers",
  451.     there should be a parent device labeled "Media Vision Pro
  452.     Audio spectrum 16/Basic" appearing.
  453.  7) Double-click "Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum 16/Basic"
  454.  8) Select Resources tab.
  455.  9) Select "Basic configuration 0" for your sound card Setting.
  456.     Make sure there is no device conflict between your PAS16
  457.     and other hardware devices. Please consult the sound card
  458.     manual for details.
  459.  
  460.   The PAS16 "parent" device driver supports two configurations:
  461.  
  462.   Basic Configuration 0: Supporting native PAS16 output only.
  463.                        
  464.   Basic Configuration 1: Supporting both native PAS16 output and
  465.                          Sound Blaster compatibility.
  466.  
  467.   Since there are two valid sound devices available to the system in
  468.   "Basic Configuration 1", it could create confusion to the sound init
  469.   step, making the program not able to pick up any sound devices.
