The crucial link in Viking's communication system was its 147-cm parabolic high-gain antenna. This could not always point towards Earth, and at these times the low-gain antenna, being less directionally sensitive, allowed more limited communications over greater-than-hemispherical coverage. There was also a third antenna. This linked solely to the lander.
