  6. Welcome to the All Product Sampler CD. This free CD includes demos of 
  7. other exciting programs you'll want to see.
  8.  
  9.  
  10. INSTALLING THE DEMOS
  11.  
  12. To install these demos:
  13.  
  14. 1. Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  15. 2. Select the File menu and choose Run from the Program Manager. 
  16.    (Or, in Windows 95, select Run from the Start menu.) 
  17. 3. Type D:\SETUP.EXE (if necessary, replace D: with the letter that 
  18.    represents your CD-ROM drive) in the command line and press ENTER. 
  19.    The Installation program opens, giving you three options: 
  20.    Education (includes The Great Word Adventure, TuneLand, and Virgil 
  21.    Reality; Games (includes Ace Ventura, Arcade America, Battle Beast, 
  22.    Cold Blooded, Dominion, Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy 
  23.    Grail, Monty Python's Complete Waste of Time, and Tracer); and 
  24.    Custom (which lets you choose which demos you want to install. 
  25. 4. Choose the option you want and click Next to start the installation.
  26. 5. Follow the instructions.
  27.  
  28. The installation program creates program icons for the demos of the 
  29. exciting products available from 7th Level. 
  30.  
  31. JOYSTICK SUPPORT
  32.  
  33. If you have a joystick that already works with other Windows 
  34. applications, then you do not need to do anything to use the 
  35. joystick with these demos.
  36.  
  37. If you have not used your joystick with other Windows applications 
  38. before, you may need to install a joystick driver. You can use the 
  39. generic Windows joystick driver that is included on the CD-ROM. It is 
  40. recommended, however, that you first try to use the Windows driver that 
  41. came with your joystick. 
  42.  
  43. To install the joystick driver that is included with the demo CD:
  44.  
  45. 1.  Double click the Control Panel icon from the Program Manager 
  46.     to start the Control Panel application.
  47. 2.  Double click the Drivers icon in the Control Panel.
  48. 3.  Click the Add button to add a driver.
  49. 4.  Select the Unlisted or Updated Driver option and click the OK button.
  50. 5.  Open the JOYSTICK directory (on the Sampler CD).
  51. 6.  Click the OK button to accept the joystick driver.
  52. 7.  Select the configuration for your joystick from the Game Adapter 
  53.     Setup dialog box and click the OK button.
  54. 8.  Click the Close button to return to the Control Panel.
  55. 9.  Restart Windows.
  56.  
  57. Next, copy the file JOYSTICK.CPL from the Joystick directory (either 
  58. on your hard disk where you installed the demos or on the CD) to the 
  59. WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory.
  60.  
  61. Calibrate and test your joystick by double clicking the Joystick icon 
  62. in the Control Panel.
  63.  
  64. Note: You may need to calibrate your joystick again if you have 
  65. disconnected it from your computer or if you notice the joystick 
  66. interfering with the operation of the mouse.

  69. RUNNING THE DEMOS

  71. Double click the program icon to see a self-running demo of 
  72. Ace Ventura.

  75. TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND COMMON PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

  77. If you have difficulty installing or running the demos, please read the 
  78. section below before calling our Technical Support phone line. By checking 
  79. the few items listed below, you may be able to solve any difficulty you are 
  80. having on your own.

  82. If you are still having difficulty, call Technical Support at 
  83. 214-498-8068. Support is available Monday - Friday from 
  84. 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, and on Saturday from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm Central Time.

  96. Problem:
  97.    The program seems to run slowly.
  98.  
  99. Solution:
  100.    As with any program running under Windows, the speed and the
  101.    smoothness of the program is dependent on the speed of the
  102.    hardware that it is running on. Hardware configurations that affect
  103.    performance are: the amount of memory and the speed of the video
  104.    card, the processor type, the amount of real memory and the transfer
  105.    rate of the CD-ROM drive. While the minimum system configuration
  106.    required to run a demo is a 486 66 MHz computer with 8 MB
  107.    of RAM, a video card capable of running 256 colors and a double-speed
  108.    CD-ROM drive, the recommended system configuration is a 486 66 MHz 
  109.    computer with 16 MB of RAM. You may be able to improve the
  110.    performance of this demo running on your computer by upgrading one 
  111.    or all of these elements of your computer system, depending on what 
  112.    you already have.

  114.    If you are running on a computer with the minimum system requirements,
  115.    here are some things you can do to try to increase your system's 
  116.    performance:
  117.  
  118.    1. Disable the background ambient sounds in the Options screen.
  119.    2. Make sure you have a permanent swap file of at least 5 MB set up 
  120.       in Windows.
  121.  
  122. Problem:
  123.    When I try to run a demo, I get a "Not enough memory" message.
  124.  
  125. Solution:
  126.    On an 8 MB system, the program requires 5 to 10 MB of virtual memory. 
  127.    For instructions on setting virtual memory, please consult your
  128.    Windows documentation.
  129.  
  130. Problem:
  131.   The program does not display properly.
  132.  
  133. Solution:
  134.    Make sure you have a video card running in 640x480 or 800x600 mode
  135.    with 256 colors. Also, make sure that you have the proper display
  136.    driver installed. A display with more colors or running at a higher
  137.    resolution also will work with this demo.
  138.  
  139. Problem:
  140.    The program is working, but I don't hear any sounds.
  141.  
  142. Solution:
  143.    Make sure your sound card is installed and working properly. You can
  144.    check the sound from your sound board by using the Sound utility in
  145.    the Control Panel. Choose one of the WAV files in the Windows
  146.    directory and click Test. 
  147.  
  148. Problem:
  149.    The sound or video skips during the program.
  150.  
  151. Solution:
  152.    Make sure you have at least 8 MB of RAM. Also, make sure that an
  153.    expanded memory manager (such as EMM386, QEMM or 386MAX) is not
  154.    reserving memory that Windows and this demo will need to run 
  155.    correctly.
  156.  
  157. Problem:
  158.    I can't get the MIDI files to play. (I'm not getting any music.)
  159.  
  160. Solution:
  161.    Most sound cards are not set up to play MIDI files unless you 
  162.    have a MIDI peripheral device attached to your computer. To set 
  163.    your sound card so that MIDI files will play without a MIDI 
  164.    peripheral device attached, follow the steps below.
  165.  
  166.    To change your MIDI settings under Windows 3.1:
  167.  
  168.    1. Double click the MIDI Mapper icon in the Control Panel.
  169.    2. Make sure the Setups radial button is selected. 
  170.    3. Click the down arrow in the Name list box.
  171.    4. Select a MIDI setup file. You should select either  General MIDI 
  172.       or All FM. (Check your sound card documentation for the correct 
  173.       setup file. If you have the SoundBlaster 16 card, select All FM.)
  174.    5. With the correct setup file selected, click the Edit button.    
  175.    6. Confirm that the correct driver is displayed for at least channels 
  176.       1 through 10. (Check your sound card documentation for the correct 
  177.       driver name. If you have a SoundBlaster 16 sound card, each channel 
  178.       should be set to the Voyetra Super Sapi FM driver.)
  179.    7. Click the OK button to exit the MIDI Setup dialog box. As you exit, 
  180.       click the Yes button to save any changes youÆve made or the No button 
  181.       to cancel any changes.
  182.    8. Click the Close button to exit the MIDI Mapper.

  184.    To change your MIDI settings under Windows 95:
  185.  
  186.    1. Select the Start Menu.
  187.    2. Choose Settings and open the Control Panel.
  188.    3. Double click the Multimedia icon and select the MIDI tab.
  189.    4. Select the MIDI setup file. (Check your sound card documentation for 
  190.       the correct setup file.)
  191.    5. Click the OK button and exit the Control Panel.

  194. Problem:
  195.    The sound and video are not synchronized properly.
  196.  
  197. Solution:
  198.    Make sure that you are running the program on a 486 66 MHz or 
  199.    better IBM-compatible computer with at least 8 MB of RAM.
  200.  
  201. Problem:
  202.   The sound breaks up or has a lot of static.
  203.  
  204. Solution:
  205.    You may need to change the DMA setting on your sound card. Please
  206.    check the documentation for your sound card for the proper settings
  207.    and how to change the settings.
  208.  
  209. Problem:
  210.    The volume is too low or too high.
  211.  
  212. Solution:
  213.    You can adjust the volume using the + and - keys within 
  214.    the demo.
  215.  
  216. Problem:
  217.    The program seems to run extremely slow.
  218.  
  219. Solution:
  220.    Make sure that you have a permanent swap file of at least 5 MB 
  221.    set up in Windows. Please consult your Windows documentation for 
  222.    instructions regarding your swap file settings.

  225. KEYBOARD FUNCTIONS
  226.  
  227. The following keyboard combinations can be used to replace mouse
  228. movements for certain activities and functions.
  229.  
  230. ALT F4      Exit the program
  231. SHIFT ESC   Exit the program
  232. ESC         Exits back to the main menu one level at a time
  233. +           Raises the master volume
  234. -           Lowers the master volume
  235. SHIFT +     Raises the WAV volume (speech and sound effects)
  236. SHIFT -     Lowers the WAV volume (speech and sound effects)
  237. CONTROL +   Raises the Midi volume (music)
  238. CONTROL -   Lowers the Midi volume (music)
  239. * (keypad)  Toggles the sound on/off
  240. PAUSE       Pause/restarts the animation
  241. SPACEBAR    Stops the current ambient animation
