  16. Getting Started
  17. - After you install Dogz, you'll see a "Dogz" icon in a Windows
  18.   Program Group (or under the "Programs" item of the START menu
  19.   in Windows '95) named "Yourname's Dogz" (where "yourname" is your
  20.   first name).
  21. - Start Dogz by double-clicking on the icon named "Dogz" (or simply 
  22.   selecting the "Dogz" icon under Windows '95).
  23. - This will open the Dogz Adoption Kit
  24. - You can pet and play with any of the five Dogz breeds and decide
  25.   which one is best for you!
  26. - When you decide which one you want to adopt, click the "Adopt 
  27.   Me Now" button.
  28.  
  29. Important Note
  30. - Dogz love to run around on your computer screen.
  31. - Whenever you let a Dogz loose on the screen, you will not
  32.   be able to click on any other application until you...
  33.  
  34.   1) put the Dogz back into the Doghouse, or
  35.   2) Quit Dogz, or
  36.   3) Press ALT-TAB to switch to another application, or
  37.   4) Press ESCAPE (this will instantly pop the Dogz back into
  38.      their Doghouses)
  39.  
  40. In the Adoption Kit you can pet and play with five different breeds 
  41. of Dogz.  Once you have adopted your own Dogz, you will have many 
  42. other things to do.  You will be able to feed, play with and train 
  43. your Dogz.  You will be able to groom them to change their color. 
  44. Your Dogz will be able to act as Guard Dogz, protecting your computer 
  45. from monitor burn-in and file snoops.  Over time, your adopted
  46. puppyDogz will grow up to be a full size Dogz.

  48. IN THE ADOPTION KIT TRY THIS...
  49.  
  50. Picking up your Dogz
  51. - To pick up Dogz and move them to a new location, click the 
  52.   right mouse button while the cursor is anywhere over the Dogz.
  53. - Don't worry - this won't hurt it.  Releasing the mouse button 
  54.   will drop your Dogz safely to the desktop.
  55. - If you drop the Dogz back on top of its doghouse, it will pop
  56.   back into its doghouse.
  57.  
  58. Dogz love to be petted!
  59. - You can pet your Dog at any time.  To do this, simply click and
  60.   hold the left mouse button while the cursor is over the Dogz.
  61.   The cursor will change to a "petting hand."
  62. - Stroke the Dog with the cursor while holding down the left 
  63.   mouse button.
  64. - If you pet your Dogz just right and long enough, it might 
  65.   roll over to let you scratch its stomach, or even go to sleep.

  67. Sleeping
  68. - If you leave Dogz alone for several minutes, they usually
  69.   nod off to sleep.  You may even catch them dreaming!
  70. - A nice way to wake up Dogz is to pet them while they're
  71.   sleeping.

  74. KNOWN MISBEHAVIORS ("TROUBLESHOOTING")
  75.  
  76. "I'm having trouble putting Dogz back into their Dogzhouses."
  77. - Make sure your cursor hand is positioned over the Dogzhouse when
  78.   you drop the Dogz off.
  79.  
  80. "My Dog disappears from the screen."
  81. - Like a real dog, your Dogz will sometimes run off on its own errands.
  82. - Try double-clicking the mouse to call your Dogz back.
  83.  
  84. "My Dog sometimes freezes on the screen."
  85. - Digital Dogz need to behave well and make sure they don't slow down
  86.   your system.  If an important application needs to control your
  87.   computer for a few seconds, your Dogz will hold still until that
  88.   application lets go.  It's nothing to worry about!
  89.  
  90. "The Dogz Playpen window has changed colors."
  91. - If you change your Display resolution or color palette while Dogz is 
  92.   running, your Dogz colors may shift undesirably.  To fix this, simply
  93.   quit and relaunch Dogz.
  94. - Also, when running on a system with only 256 colors, opening or selecting
  95.   another application can sometimes cause Dogz colors to change (the programs
  96.   are competing for the same colors).  If your Dogz turns black, changes
  97.   colors in an unexpected way, or the Playpen background colors become
  98.   distorted, try minimizing the Playpen window and re-opening it.
  99. - If this does not work, close and re-open Dogz and the problem should
  100.   go away.
  101.  
  102. "Guard Dogz requires a password, but I did not set one!"
  103. - If you had already set a password for another screen saver, you may find
  104.   that this password is still required for Guard Dogz.
  105.  
  106. "I'm not hearing any sounds."
  107. - To hear your Dogz, you need a SoundBlaster(tm) compatible card 
  108.   installed.
  109. - Remember that if Dogz is ever minimized or another application is
  110.   opened on top of Dogz (even when "Always on Top" is set), your Dogz
  111.   will keep quiet.  Only when Dogz is the foremost application will
  112.   sounds be heard.

  114. "The Playpen window sometimes appears on screen over my screen saver."
  115. - If you set the Playpen window to be "Always on Top" and Dogz is
  116.   left running in Fullscreen mode, on some computers, the Playpen
  117.   window will be visible above other screen savers when they appear
  118.   on screen.  To eliminate this problem, either turn off the "Always
  119.   on Top" setting or be sure to put your Dogz back into the Playpen
  120.   when you are finished playing with your Dogz.

  122. "Does Installing Dogz affect my system files?"
  123. - The files that come with PF. Magic Dogz are as system-friendly 
  124.   as possible.  Dogz won't crawl into your AUTOEXEC.BAT or 
  125.   CONFIG.SYS files and mess them up.
  126.  
  127. "Dogz booted me back to the Adoption Kit, and is asking me for an Unlock Code!"
  128. - If you installed the Retail CD (or floppies) over any previously 
  129.   installed demo versions of Dogz, the Retail version may "revert" and think it's
  130.   the demo.  Even if you are not sure that you installed over another version, the
  131.   following solution is highly recommended for this problem: 
  132.   
  133.   a)Search your computer for all Dogz-related files (see outline below)
  134.   b)Uninstall (delete them) 
  135.   c)Re-boot your machine
  136.   d)Re-install from your retail CD (or floppies).
  137.  
  138.   I.  In the WINDOWS DIRECTORY (C:\WINDOWS, C:\WIN, or C:\Win95) find and delete 
  139.       the following files:
  140.       1)  Dogzdll.dll
  141.       2)  Guarddog.dll
  142.       3)  Guarddog.ini
  143.       4)  Guarddog.scr   (If you don't have all of the Guarddog.* files, skip 'em)
  144.  
  145.   II. In the root of your C: drive delete the following directory:
  146.       Dogz.xxx  <-- (where xxx = the 1st three letters of the registered owner 
  147.                     or the letters "fir")
  148.  
  149.   * The location of the WINDOWS and DOGZ.xxx directories may vary depending on whether 
  150.   you chose to use their default locations upon install.
