  1. Welcome to Adobe Acrobat Reader 2.1 for Windows 
  2.  
  3. Adobe(tm) Acrobat(tm) software gives you instant access to documents in 
  4. their original form, independent of computer platform. With the Acrobat 
  5. Reader, you can view, navigate, print and present any Portable Document 
  6. Format (PDF) file.
  7.  
  8. This Read Me file contains installation instructions and product 
  9. information for the Acrobat Reader program. The On-line Guide 
  10. (help_r.pdf) also provides essential information to help you begin 
  11. using Acrobat Reader 2.1.

  23. NEW FEATURES IN ACROBAT READER 2.1
  24. ==================================
  25. Acrobat Reader 2.1 now runs under Windows NT 3.5 (or later), Windows 3.1, 
  26. and Windows 95, as well as OS/2 2.11 or later in Windows compatibility 
  27. mode. AdobeÆs ATM technology for rendering Type 1 fonts has been built 
  28. into Acrobat Reader 2.1 for Windows so it is no longer necessary to install 
  29. ATM on Windows systems. For Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, installing ATM is 
  30. an option (not included with the Reader) that may improve performance of 
  31. printing documents with Type 1 fonts to non-PostScript printers.
  32.  
  33. Acrobat Reader 2.1 now accepts some specially enabled plug-ins, such as 
  34. Weblink and Movie. This allows Acrobat Reader users to take advantage of 
  35. new capabilities in PDF files created with Acrobat Exchange, for example 
  36. following World Wide Web (URL) links or viewing QuickTime and AVI 
  37. (Windows only) movies within a PDF document.
  38.  
  39. Printing quality has been improved to non-PostScript printers.
  40.  
  41. Limitations in printing to some non-Postscript printers with non-square 
  42. pixels (some fax modems and dot-matrix printers) have been removed.
  43.  
  44. Acrobat Reader 2.1 generates DSC-compliant PostScript when used with the 
  45. AdobePS 3.0 (or later) driver.
  46.  
  47. INSTALLING ACROBAT READER
  48. =========================
  49. - To install Acrobat Reader 2.1 on your hard drive, from the Windows 
  50. Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu; type 
  51.   [drive]:\setup.exe 
  52. - Follow the instructions on your screen.
  53. - Installation requires approximately 3 MB of free hard disk space. 
  54.  
  55. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  56. ===================
  57. - 386- or 486-based personal computer (486 recommended)
  58. - Microsoft Windows 3.1 or greater
  59. - 4 MB application RAM
  60. - 4 MB hard disk space
  61. - 1.44 MB 3.5" floppy disk drive
  62.  
  63. USING THE WEBLINK TOOL WITH ACROBAT READER
  64. ==========================================
  65. To use the Weblink plug-in to follow links, you must set up your browser to
  66. recognize Acrobat Reader. See the Adobe Home Page (http://www.adobe.com)
  67. for information on configuring your browser to recognize PDF documents.
  68.  
  69. To install the Weblink plug-in:
  70.         1. Copy the Weblink plug-in to the Adobe Acrobat Plug-ins directory.
  71.         If you just installed Acrobat Reader, the Weblink plug-in may
  72.         already exist in the Plug-ins directory.
  73.         2. Restart Acrobat Reader.
  74.  
  75. To select your Web browser:
  76.         1. Choose Edit>Preferences>Weblink.
  77.         2. Click Browse, then select your Web browse from the dialog box.
  78.         3. Choose a Connection Type. Standard is the connection type for
  79.         the supported browsers Netscape 1.1 and Spyglass Mosaic 2.0.
  80.  
  81. To open your web browser from Acrobat Reader click the Web browser button
  82. in the toolbar. This feature fails intermittantly in Windows 95.
  83.  
  84. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  85. ================
  86. Errors During Acrobat Reader Installation
  87. When launched, the Acrobat Reader installer (SETUP.EXE) makes a copy 
  88. of the SETUP.EXE file in the temp directory specified in the 
  89. AUTOEXEC.BAT file. When the drive and directory listed in the "Set temp=" 
  90. line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file are invalid or you don't have write access 
  91. to that drive and directory,or enough space on the drive, the Acrobat Reader 
  92. installation fails, and returns the errors "Cannot load the language 
  93. library", "Cannot load the license agreement", or "Not enough free disk 
  94. space to continue installation".
  95.  
  96. Do one or more of the following: 
  97. A. Ensure there is at least 4-8MB free disk space available on the hard 
  98. drive onto which Acrobat Reader is being installed.
  99. B. Ensure the "Set temp=" line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT is valid: 
  100.  1. Open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in a text editor that saves as text-only 
  101.  (e.g., Windows Write, Notepad). 
  102.  2. Locate the line that reads "Set temp=" and verify the drive and 
  103.  directory following the equal sign are valid. When the "Set temp=" 
  104.  line points to an invalid drive or directory, edit the line to point 
  105.  to a valid drive and directory, then save the file as text-only. 
  106.  3. Reboot the computer.
  107. C. Ensure you have write access to the drive where the TEMP directory 
  108. is located.
  109.  
  110. Windows95
  111. Installation From the Network -- If you set up a network server with 
  112. the Acrobat Reader installation disk images (this problem does not occur 
  113. with the single-file Reader Installer) so users can install Acrobat Reader 
  114. over the network, the user installing the software must run the 
  115. installation from a network drive that is mapped, not directly from the 
  116. Network Neighborhood. The easist way to assign (map) a drive letter to a 
  117. network computer or folder is as follows:
  118.  
  119. 1. On the Windows 95 desktop, right mouse click My Computer, and then 
  120. click Map Network Drive. The Map Network Drive dialog appears.
  121. 2. Select a Drive letter.
  122. 3. Select a Path to the network server you want. 
  123. For example:
  124. \\computername\foldername
  125. If a password is required, Windows prompts you. 
  126.  
  127. After the drive has been mapped, double click on My Computer to open the 
  128. My Computer window. The drive name and letter you just mapped will be 
  129. listed and can be used to navigate to the Acrobat Reader install disks.
  130.  
  131. Weblink Plug-in
  132. - Spyglass Mosaic under Win32s crashes intermittantly when a download is
  133. cancelled from Weblink.
  134. - An invalid gopher URL (e.g. gopher://example.com/pub/test.pdf) will
  135. download an error message as a text file with the PDF file name. Acrobat 
  136. Reader will return the message "There was an error opening this document. 
  137. File does not begin with %PDF-".
  138. - If the web browser is busy contacting the host for over one minute,
  139. Weblink will return the message "The web browser has not responded to
  140. your request for over 1 minute: terminating request". The browser may
  141. not respond to Weblink's attempt to cancel; use the web browser button
  142. in the toolbar to activate the browser and manually cancel the request. 
  143.  
  144. PCL Printing 
  145. The printer drivers shipped with Microsoft Windows 3.1 for the HP LaserJet 
  146. III, IIID, IIIP, and IIISi printers may not work well with Acrobat Reader 
  147. (and other applications for that matter). Adobe recommends you use a PCL 
  148. printer driver based on the Universal Printer Driver V.3.1.2. Here are four 
  149. ways to get this driver:
  150.  
  151. COMPUSERVE. Type "GO MSL" to get to the Microsoft Software Library forum. 
  152. Download the file named HPPCL5.EXE. Place this file on an empty, formatted 
  153. DOS diskette then from DOS run the file to extract the driver and 
  154. installation instructions which are in the file named printer.txt.
  155.  
  156. MICROSOFT'S BULLETIN BOARD. Microsoft's bulletin-board download service 
  157. can be reached at 206-936-6735. It supports up to 9600 baud and you should 
  158. set up your modem to use 8-bit, 1 stop bit, and no parity. Once connected, 
  159. there is a menu-driven bulletin board. Download the file named "HPPCL5.EXE" 
  160. and follow the same directions as above.
  161.  
  162. MICROSOFT. If you don't have a modem, you may call Microsoft directly at 
  163. 206-637-7098 to obtain the LaserJet III printer drivers on a diskette.
  164.  
  165. HEWLETT PACKARD. Again, if you don't have a modem, you may call Hewlett 
  166. Packard directly at 303-353-7650 and obtain the LaserJet III printer 
  167. drivers on a diskette. You may also use this number to obtain the latest 
  168. printer drivers for the HP LaserJet 4, DeskJet, and PaintJet families of 
  169. printers.
  170.  
  171. If you experience problems printing to HP LaserJet printers in the 600-dpi 
  172. mode try switching back to 300-dpi mode or if it is equipped with a 
  173. PostScript option, use the PostScript mode for 600-dpi printing. This 
  174. 600-dpi PCL5 printing problem does not seem specific to Acrobat.
  175.  
  176. If outline-style text is printing incorrectly to a PCL printer (outlines 
  177. printing on top of black characters) make the following change in the ATM 
  178. Conrol Panel: check the option to "Print ATM Fonts as Graphics." 
  179.  
  180. To properly print certain special text effects (such as shadow, zoomed 
  181. text, or outlined text) to non-PostScript printers it may be required to 
  182. select the Print ATM Fonts as Graphics option in the ATM Control Panel. 
  183. Certain printer drivers including the LaserJet PCL4 (Series II and higher), 
  184. PCL5 (LaserJet III and LaserJet 4 families) and the Lexmark PPDS (4029 & 
  185. 4029) always print black soft fonts on top of images and non-black text 
  186. strings. 
  187.  
  188. Documents with various graphic images may not print correctly to the 
  189. LaserJet 4 in PCL mode at 600 dpi unless the Graphics option in the Windows 
  190. printer driver setup is set to Raster mode. 
  191.  
  192. To increase printer performance of documents formatted entirely in 
  193. landscape orientation to non- PostScript printers the printer driver 
  194. must be set in landscape orientation in the Windows printer setup. 
  195.  
  196. Postscript Printing
  197. AdobePS 3.01 Driver  For best results when printing to PostScript printers, 
  198. Adobe recommends you use the AdobePS 3.01 (or later) driver. The driver  
  199. and installation instructions are included on the Acrobat Sampler CD.
  200.  
  201. AdobePS 2.1.1 Driver  You may experience problems when printing from 
  202. Acrobat Reader 2.1 when using the AdobePS 2.1.1 printer driver. The 
  203. problems occur in printing certain documents that use TrueType fonts 
  204. or extended characters, such as typographic quote marks. A PSPrinter 
  205. 2.1.2 update that fixes both of these problems is available. The AdobePS 
  206. 2.1.2 update upgrades an installed version of AdobePS 2.1.1 to 2.1.2 
  207. is available from the following sources:
  208.  
  209. COMPUSERVE.   Type GO ADOBE to get to the Adobe forum.
  210.  
  211. FTP.  AdobeÆs ftp Server is at ftp.adobe.com. The path to the updater is 
  212. ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/Applications/Drivers/Windows/adobeps.exe
  213.  
  214. WORLD WIDE WEB. AdobeÆs World Wide Web server is at http://www.adobe.com.
  215.  
  216. PHONE.  Call one of the following telephone numbers to have the 
  217. AdobePS 2.1.2 update disk sent to you directly. Shipping and handling 
  218. charges may apply.

  223. Note: The update is not the complete, standalone AdobePS 2.1.2 driver. 
  224. It will only update a previously installed version of AdobePS 2.1.1.
  225.  
  226. Memory Issues. If you encounter problems, such as as VMerror, printing 
  227. to PostScript Level 1 or 2 printers it may be because the printer has 
  228. little available memory (for example, a non-upgraded LaserWriter, LaserWriter 
  229. Plus, LaserWriter II NT or NTX). There are two potential solutions to this 
  230. problem: 
  231. 1/In the General Preferences dialog (select from the Edit/Preferences 
  232. menu) you may choose to use Serif only or Sans only for font substituion. 
  233. This frees up additional memory in the printer and chances are your 
  234. document will print successfully. 
  235. 2/The other option is to purchase more memory for your printer.
  236.  
  237. Apple Personal LaserWriter NT   If you are using an Apple Personal 
  238. LaserWriter NT printer that has not been upgraded to a Personal 
  239. LaserWriter NTR, Acrobat Reader won't be able to print substitute fonts. 
  240. Contact your Apple dealer for information on upgrading your printer.
  241.  
  242. Miscellaneous Issues
  243. CANON BJC 800 PRINTER In order to properly print text, graphics, and images 
  244. to this printer be sure to check the Use Print Manager option in the Printers 
  245. control panel. 
  246. CANON LBP-8IV  Use the printers "bitmap mode" for best results.
  247. COMPAQ MGA8.DRV VIDEO DRIVER  Using this video driver (installed on Compaq 
  248. DeskproXL 586 (1024x768, 640x480, 256 colors) with Compaq Qvision 2000 board 
  249. may cause Acrobat Reader to crash. Solution: Turn off Page Caching in the 
  250. Edit > Preferences > General dialog.
  251. HP DESKJET 500C  This printer has an unprintable area near the top of the 
  252. page. Be sure to use the Shrink to Fit option in Acrobat ReaderÆs Print 
  253. dialog.
  254. FONT NOT FOUND  A font not found error may indicate that ATM did not have 
  255. enough memory to create a substitute font. See the Improving Performance 
  256. section of this file for information on how to increase the memory available 
  257. to ATM (if installed).
  258. INSTALL  Due to problems with some Desktop Managers, during installation 
  259. the Adobe Acrobat  program group and the Acrobat Reader program item may 
  260. not be created. By default, the program is installed in the directory 
  261. c:\acroread and the executable is c:\acroread\acroread.exe.
  262. LOTUS NOTES  When you open an embedded PDF file from a Notes database, 
  263. the Acrobat Reader window seems to flicker slightly. This is because Lotus 
  264. Notes is giving Acrobat Reader OLE instructions to Show, Hide, then Show 
  265. the PDF document.
  266. MACH 32 VIDEO CARD FROM ATI  If you are using the MACH 32 ATI card, be 
  267. sure to use the 256-color mode with the Color Pallette ON. In other words, 
  268. do not use the 256-color mode with the color pallette off. For Acrobat, 
  269. make sure the Pallette is ON. 
  270. NEC ULTRALITE VERSA LINEAR DRIVER  Rotated images may display with artifacts 
  271. when using the UltraLite Versa Linear 640x480 256 color video driver. 
  272. Solution: Use the UltraLite Versa 640x480 256 color driver.
  273. NUMBER 9 VIDEO DRIVER  When Acrobat ReaderÆs page caching is enabled, if 
  274. you experience horizontal lines running across the page try turning off the 
  275. turbo mode in the #9GXE video driver. This can be done via the Turbo menu 
  276. in the program #9GXE Status available in the #9 Hawkeye Control 
  277. Panel.
  278. OLE  When viewing a PDF file which is an embedded OLE object, you can 
  279. only perform an incremental save, not a full save. Operations which 
  280. require a full size are things like inserting another PDF file. As a 
  281. result, you cannot perform this operation on an embedded OLE object.
  282. OS/2  Acrobat Reader should run in the Windows 3.1 compatibility mode 
  283. of OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 2.1.1.
  284. PAGE CACHING  Page caching is disabled for 16-bit and 24-bit displays 
  285. and the option is grayed out in the General Preferences dialog.
  286. PATTERNS  Files produced by the Acrobat Distiller containing patterns 
  287. may display slowly and cause memory shortages. This can often be the case 
  288. when applications represent patterns as thousands of small Type 3 font 
  289. characters. If you experience this problem, it is recommended to use 
  290. color rather than pattern fills.
  291. PC TOOLS FOR WINDOWS 1.0  No Adobe Acrobat group is created and no 
  292. program items/icons are created. See INSTALL problem above for description 
  293. of workaround. 
  294. PHONENET  PhoneNet does not properly map Macintosh file names containing 
  295. upper-ASCII characters. As a result, you will not be able to open any such 
  296. files in Acrobat Reader. Solution: DonÆt use special characters in file 
  297. names to be accessed by both Macintosh and Windows users over a 
  298. PhoneNet network.
  299. PRINTING FROM FILE MANAGER  Only one PDF file at a time can be selected 
  300. and printed from the File Manager.
  301. ROTATING PAGES  Rotating pages results in the loss of thumbnail images 
  302. for those pages. You can regenerate the thumbnails by choosing 
  303. Edit/Thumbnails/Create All. 
  304. ROTATED/TRANSFORMED TRUETYPE FONTS  You may encounter some problems with 
  305. displaying or printing rotated or otherwise transformed TrueType fonts. 
  306. This is a limitation of TrueType and Windows. For best results, we recommend 
  307. you use Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts in your documents. 
  308. STANDARD MODE  Acrobat Reader 2.1 does not work in standard mode; you 
  309. must be running Windows 3.1 in enhanced mode.
  310. SYSHOOK  Syshook is an application that patches the system menus of 
  311. applications; it does not work well with Acrobat Reader. 
  312. TRUE TYPE  TrueType fonts cannot be reencoded. Because of this limitation, 
  313. documents that were created using some special characters in a Type 1 font 
  314. may not display correctly if a TrueType version of the font with the same 
  315. name is installed on your system. When this happens, the error message 
  316. "Some text in the font and character 'FONTNAME ###' could not be displayed 
  317. or printed correctly. The font could not be reencoded." is displayed. Since 
  318. the Acrobat installers do not replace TrueType versions of Times, Helvetica, 
  319. and Courier you may get this message with these fonts. Solution: Use the 
  320. Custom Install option to install a Type 1 version of these fonts.
  321. WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS  The Windows for Workgroups Netware extensions 
  322. (\windows\netx.com) have been known to cause problems with Acrobat Reader's 
  323. Open dialog, as well as other applicationÆs Open dialog. 
  324. Solution: Contact Microsoft.
  325. WRONG COLORS  If the colors on your monitor seem completely wrong, 
  326. try the following. In the Acrobat Reader's ini file (c:\windows\acroread.ini) 
  327. try changing the line 'IS8514=4' to 'IS8514=105'.
  328.

  330. TO CREATE YOUR OWN PDF DOCUMENTS
  331. ================================
  332. To take full advantage of the benefits of electronic documents, you can 
  333. purchase Acrobat Exchange, Acrobat Pro, or Acrobat for Workgroups with the 
  334. coupon contained in the Acrobat Reader On-line Guide (available on the 
  335. Acrobat CD Sampler). With the full Acrobat products, you can:

  337. - Create your own electronic documents as easily as printing from your 
  338.   existing applications with PDF Writer.
  339. - Protect your files with passwords; control access, printing, changing 
  340.   the document, adding and changing notes, copying text and graphics.
  341. - Find exactly what you need across multiple PDF files by searching on 
  342.   keywords, author, title, subject synonyms, etc.
  343. - Reuse information easily by extracting, copying, reordering and replacing 
  344.   pages among PDF files -- with bookmarks, links and notespreserved.
  345. - Create your own custom views into information.
  346. - Add value, set priorities and maintain a dynamic information network 
  347.   with links, bookmarks, notes and connections to external applications 
  348.   and documents.
  349. - Take advantage of third-party plug-ins to add new features to  Acrobat.
  350. - Integrate Acrobat with your desktop applications with Acrobat's support 
  351.   for OLE automation, Notes F/X, AppleEvents, and more.
