  27. Don't forget to back up your hard drives before using PartitionMagic.
  28. While PartitionMagic has been thoroughly tested, power failures, 
  29. operating system bugs, and hardware design bugs can put your data 
  30. at risk. BEFORE USING ANY UTILITY THAT MAKES SUCH EXTENSIVE CHANGES 
  31. TO YOUR HARD DISK, YOU SHOULD BACK UP YOUR DATA!

  33. To back up your system, we recommend using PowerQuest's Drive 
  34. Image(R) or Drive Image(R) Pro. Drive Image is a state-of-the-art 
  35. disk imaging tool that allows you to create an image of your entire 
  36. system (an exact sector-for-sector copy) that can easily be restored.
  37. Having a backup allows you to run PartitionMagic with the security 
  38. of knowing that you can get your system back up and running 
  39. quickly if you run into problems.

  42. 2. PARTITIONMAGIC 5.0 ENHANCEMENTS

  45.     A. Ability to merge FAT and FAT32 partitions
  46.     --------------------------------------------
  47.     You can use PartitionMagic to merge FAT and FAT32 partitions
  48.     that are adjacent to each other on a hard disk. You should be
  49.     careful not to merge two primary partitions that include
  50.     operating systems.

  52.     B. Improved interface

  54.     Partitions on the partition map are color-coded, so
  55.     you can identify the file system type at a glance.  
  56.     The partition map in the main window includes
  57.     indicators for the 2 GB boot code boundary and the
  58.     1024 cylinder limit.  Each partition on the partition
  59.     map includes color coding to indicate used and unused
  60.     space.

  101.     The automatic error fixing feature in PartitionMagic 5.0
  102.     detects most common partition table errors and can correct 
  103.     them automatically.  A number of computer systems are 
  104.     shipped from the manufacturer with partition table errors, 
  105.     including partitions that overlap, extend past the end of 
  106.     the disk, or have CHS/LBA conflicts.  The automatic fixing
  107.     feature will detect and correct these types of errors.

  109.     I. Support for NTFS 5
  110.     ---------------------
  111.     You can perform all PartitionMagic 5.0 operations on
  112.     NTFS 5 partitions.

  114.     J. Improved interface for scripting (Pro version only)

  117.     makes it easy to create scripts. The Script Builder

  122. 3. KNOWN ISSUES
  123. ---------------
  124.     A. Running other applications with PartitionMagic
  125.     -------------------------------------------------
  126.     Under Windows 95/98 and Windows NT, you should not run
  127.     PartitionMagic while any other applications are running. 
  128.     Close any running applications before starting PartitionMagic.
  129.  
  130.  
  131.     B. OS Environments supported by PartitionMagic
  132.     ----------------------------------------------
  133.     PartitionMagic runs on DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95/98, and 
  134.     Windows NT Workstation 4.0. Versions for each of these 
  135.     environments are included on the installation CD.  
  136.     PartitionMagic does not run on Windows NT Server. PowerQuest 
  137.     markets another partitioning product, ServerMagic (R), that 
  138.     is specifically designed to support the Windows NT Server 
  139.     and Novell NetWare server environments. 
  140.  
  141.     Windows NT 3.51 and OS/2 are not supported by native versions 
  142.     of PartitionMagic but are supported by the DOS rescue disk 
  143.     version of PartitionMagic.
  144.

  146.     C. Bad Sector Checking is ON by default
  147.     ---------------------------------------
  148.     Be aware that PartitionMagic ships with Bad Sector Checking 
  149.     turned ON by default in Preferences.  This ensures that data 
  150.     is not moved or copied to bad disk sectors.  However, this 
  151.     causes the Create, Move, and Resize operations to slow down 
  152.     considerably.
  153.  
  154.     The quality of modern disks is such that bad sectors are rare.
  155.     Furthermore, most modern computers can determine when a sector 
  156.     is bad; if this happens, the computer automatically marks the 
  157.     sector as bad (so it will never be used) and then uses an 
  158.     alternate sector.
  159.  
  160.     If you feel confident that there are no bad sectors on your 
  161.     system, and you want to improve the performance of 
  162.     PartitionMagic, then turn off Bad Sector Checking (by checking 
  163.     the appropriate boxes in the "Skip bad sector checks" listbox 
  164.     in Preferences).  Another way to verify that there are no bad 
  165.     sectors on your disk is to run the Windows 95/98 ScanDisk 
  166.     utility and do a surface scan before launching PartitionMagic.

  169.     D. Backing up your BOOT.INI file in Windows NT
  170.     ----------------------------------------------
  171.     PartitionMagic for Windows NT needs to temporarily replace your
  172.     BOOT.INI file after performing the disk manipulation operations.
  173.     It restores the file once it has finished performing the 
  174.     operations and rebooting.  If a failure occurs during the NT 
  175.     reboot phase, your BOOT.INI file may not be restored properly.
  176.     It is a good idea to back up your BOOT.INI file before running 
  177.     PartitionMagic for Windows NT.

  180.     E. Volume sets and stripe sets on Windows NT
  181.     --------------------------------------------
  182.     Currently PartitionMagic does not support moving or copying of
  183.     Windows NT volume or stripe sets.
  184.  
  185.  
  186.     F. MOUSE.COM issue running PartitionMagic under Windows 3.x
  187.     -----------------------------------------------------------
  188.     By default, Windows 3.x disables MOUSE.COM in the AUTOEXEC.BAT 
  189.     file and MOUSE.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS file.  This makes Windows 
  190.     3.x use its own proprietary mouse driver.  When PartitionMagic
  191.     is run from Windows 3.x with this situation, MOUSE.COM is 
  192.     never called, and PartitionMagic runs without a mouse.  You 
  193.     can have a mouse with PartitionMagic under Windows 3.x if 
  194.     the MOUSE.COM mouse driver is loaded before Windows 3.x is 
  195.     loaded; this may require you to edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT or 
  196.     CONFIG.SYS file.

  199.     G. Uninstalling PartitionMagic under Win3.x
  200.     -------------------------------------------
  201.     The "PowerQuest" program group is not removed when you 
  202.     uninstall PartitionMagic under Win3.x.  You can delete 
  203.     the program group manually.

  206.     H. Mixed IDE/SCSI drive configurations under Windows NT
  207.     -------------------------------------------------------
  208.     In a configuration with mixed IDE and SCSI hard drives, Windows NT
  209.     does not always see the boot drive as the first physical hard 
  210.     drive.  PartitionMagic displays drives in the order Windows NT 
  211.     reports them.  As a result, you may see your boot device as 
  212.     Drive 1, 2, etc.  This does not cause problems for 
  213.     PartitionMagic except when setting a new active partition.  
  214.     Also, PartitionMagic may incorrectly report that there is no 
  215.     active partition on your system.  To change your active 
  216.     partition, be sure that you identify which drive is the boot 
  217.     drive. 
  218.     
  219.     With this configuration, there is the possibility your BOOT.INI
  220.     file can be corrupted; therefore, we recommend you back up your 
  221.     BOOT.INI file before running PartitionMagic.
  222.

  224.     I. Windows NT may improperly detect the size of large hard drives
  225.     -----------------------------------------------------------------
  226.     Windows NT 4.0 may incorrectly report the size of hard drives 
  227.     larger than 10GB.  Most often it reports them as 8GB drives.  
  228.     This problem may be solved by installing Service Pack 3, or 
  229.     (if you have Service Pack 1 or 2) installing the patch 
  230.     ata-fixi.exe from the following URL:

  235.     J. Color palette issues installing Windows NT version
  236.     -----------------------------------------------------
  237.     If you run the Windows NT version of PartitionMagic immediately
  238.     after installation, occasionally you may see color palette 
  239.     problems.  We recommend rebooting Windows NT before running 
  240.     PartitionMagic for the first time.
  241.

  243.     K. PartitionMagic 5.0 produces old-style uppercase table
  244.     --------------------------------------------------------
  245.     The Windows 95/98 and MS-DOS versions of PartitionMagic format 
  246.     NTFS file systems with the uppercase table used by NT 4.0 
  247.     before Service Pack 4. When Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4 
  248.     or Windows 2000 Professional are started after an NTFS file 
  249.     system is created by PartitionMagic, they detect the old-style
  250.     uppercase table and change it to the new version.

  253.     L. UNC Paths Do Not Work for Installation
  254.     -----------------------------------------
  255.     If you install PartitionMagic from a network directory, you must
  256.     have a drive letter mapped to the directory. UNC (universal
  257.     naming convention) paths will not work for installation. If you
  258.     do not have a drive letter mapped to the directory, you will
  259.     receive error #0 or error #1 and installation will fail.

  301. 5. GENERAL USAGE NOTES
  302. ----------------------
  303. - If you run PartitionMagic from DOS:  Turn off third-party disk 
  304. caches.  Deactivate or unload any TSR programs that access or 
  305. modify the partitions being changed.  Do not run PartitionMagic 
  306. from a compressed drive.
  307.  
  308. - If you run PartitionMagic from Windows 3.x:  After using 
  309. PartitionMagic, it is normal to get an error message when starting 
  310. Windows 3.1 stating that the swap file is corrupt.  Windows 3.1 
  311. recognizes that disk utilities may move the clusters of the swap 
  312. file.  When a move is detected, Windows displays an error message.  
  313. To fix the swap file, click the 386 Enhanced icon in the Control 
  314. Panel, then the Virtual Memory button.  Delete the swap file and 
  315. recreate it.
  316.  
  317. - Be aware that there is no undo if you merge two FAT or FAT32 
  318. partitions. You must be particularly careful not to merge two
  319. primary partitions that include operating systems, as your 
  320. computer will not be bootable if you do.

  324. 6. SECURITY PROBLEMS USING SHARED DRIVE LETTERS UNDER WINDOWS 95/98
  325. -------------------------------------------------------------------
  326. Be aware that under Windows 95/98, if you are using shared privileges 
  327. to share drives and you add or remove a partition (causing the drive 
  328. letters to change), you may experience some security problems.
  329.  
  330. The following is a possible example of a security problem sharing 
  331. drive letters under Windows 95/98 after partitioning your hard drive.
  332. Assume that before you partitioned your hard drive, your CD-ROM drive
  333. had shared privileges for drive D:.  After you added a partition, 
  334. your CD-ROM became drive E:.  However, your shared privileges would 
  335. still be assigned to drive D. Therefore, you could potentially be 
  336. sharing information from your D: partition that you do not wish to 
  337. share.
  338.  
  339. To resolve this problem, you may want to check (and if necessary, 
  340. reset) your shared privileges in Windows 95/98 after you have added 
  341. or removed a partition. You will not be affected by this situation if
  342. you share a directory and its parent directory and its parent drive 
  343. letter changes because the shared privilege would be lost.

  347. 7. CORRECTION TO USER GUIDE
  348. ---------------------------
  349. There is an error in Chapter 6 under "Generating Diagnostic Reports
  350. with PartitionInfo." The third paragraph, which begins "The first
  351. time you run..." should be replaced with the following:
  352.  
  353. Every time you run PartitionMagic on your machine, it creates a 
  354. snapshot file PQ_DEBUG.TXT that includes information about all the 
  355. partitions on your machine. The file is saved in the Windows\System
  356. folder (for Windows 95/98) or the %system root%\system32 directory 
  357. (for Windows NT). The PQ_DEBUG.TXT file may be beneficial for 
  358. PowerQuest technical support if you call PowerQuest for help 
  359. resolving problems with PartitionMagic.
