  17. <p>    The lean and mean of haute couture were poised to think --
  18. and say -- the worst about Gianfranco Ferre. After all, the
  19. Italian had replaced the redoubtable Marc Bohan at the House of
  20. Dior when the latter got the boot in May. Last week, as Ferre
  21. showed his first collection, fashion's arbiters met to pass
  22. judgment on his bows and furbelows. Sweltering inside a Parisian
  23. garden tent, U.S. buyers were warm in their admiration for his
  24. ball gowns. Though he picked up the Golden Thimble for his
  25. sumptuous duds, most locals gave the interloper's designs a cool
  26. shoulder. Their verdict: not French enough. Quelle surprise!
