  18. <p>     Singing in public can make many people nervous--including
  19. the otherwise mettlesome Meryl Streep. She belts out a country
  20. tune in the fall film Postcards from the Edge, based on Carrie
  21. Fisher's novel about a drug-plagued actress who, among other
  22. things, sings in a Western. "I was beside myself with fear,"
  23. says Streep. "My knees were going a mile a minute and my upper
  24. lip was uncontrollable." The Oscar winner repeated the song for
  25. three full days until she and director Mike Nichols were
  26. satisfied. Afterward she treated the L.A. crew and cast to an
  27. off-the-cuff concert.
