-
By Michael Quinn
-

-
On the 19th of February, somebody gunned down a North
- Carolina bail bondsman named Eddie Dow--but that's not why
- you're reading about him now. No, what makes the late Mr. Dow
- so intriguing is something the cops found in his stainless-steel
- briefcase: copies of checks adding up to $108,000 from one
- Michael ("Air") Jordan, gravity-defying basketballer. Dow's
- lawyer and brother say the checks paid off debts Jordan ran up
- in dice, poker and golf games. The N.B.A. superstar also gave
- a $57,000 check to golf-shop owner James ("Slim") Bouler, which
- a federal affidavit alleges was yet another gambling payoff.
- Jordan has broken no laws--but his all-American image may be
- shattered for good.
