  17. <p>     On the 19th of February, somebody gunned down a North
  18. Carolina bail bondsman named Eddie Dow--but that's not why
  19. you're reading about him now. No, what makes the late Mr. Dow
  20. so intriguing is something the cops found in his stainless-steel
  21. briefcase: copies of checks adding up to $108,000 from one
  22. Michael ("Air") Jordan, gravity-defying basketballer. Dow's
  23. lawyer and brother say the checks paid off debts Jordan ran up
  24. in dice, poker and golf games. The N.B.A. superstar also gave
  25. a $57,000 check to golf-shop owner James ("Slim") Bouler, which
  26. a federal affidavit alleges was yet another gambling payoff.
  27. Jordan has broken no laws--but his all-American image may be
  28. shattered for good.
