  17. <p>    Few fans of the embattled New York Yankees are inclined to
  18. be merciful toward the team's loudmouthed and intrusive owner,
  19. George Steinbrenner. But last week Steinbrenner was officially
  20. forgiven and rehabilitated by an old sportscaster -- Ronald
  21. Reagan. In one of his last official acts as President, Reagan
  22. pardoned Steinbrenner for illegally funneling $100,000 to
  23. Richard Nixon's 1972 presidential re-election campaign, for
  24. which the boss had been fined $15,000 and banned from the
  25. Yankees' management for 15 months. Said Steinbrenner, who is
  26. better known for berating players and managers than offering
  27. thanks: "I am very grateful."
