  17. <p>    Norman Mailer reportedly considers being photographed the
  18. equivalent of undergoing root-canal work. That hasn't stopped
  19. the author from starring in his own bizarre improvisational
  20. films. Last week Mailer lectured on his celluloid life at a New
  21. York City retrospective of his movies. Among them: Maidstone,
  22. the film he made in 1968 that ends with Mailer's family
  23. shrieking "Daddy! Daddy!" off-camera as the author-director
  24. tries to bite an ear off actor Rip Torn, who had attacked him
  25. with a hammer. The battle ceases with an exchange of insults,
  26. with Mailer muttering "He's hurt worse than me." How things
  27. have changed. "In Rip's view, everything made perfect sense,"
  28. says a now grateful Mailer. "He may have saved the film."
  29. Sometimes it takes a hammer to drive home a point.
