  7.     Canned Pineapple. One year after his capture was hailed as
  8. a major victory in the drug war, Manuel Noriega sat in a Miami
  9. jail while his lawyers haggled with the government over the size
  10. of their legal fees and the issue of whether the former
  11. Panamanian dictator can get a fair trial.

  13.     Overdue Bill. Tough-talking William Bennett spent nearly two
  14. years fighting narcotics from a Cabinet-level bully pulpit. But
  15. Bennett left his drug-war post so meekly and with such meager
  16. results that some wondered if the general had gone AWOL. Bennett
  17. then backed off from his acceptance of a job as head of the
  18. Republican National Committee, throwing the party into even
  19. greater disarray.

  21.     Hold the Phone. The trustees of Washington's American
  22. University offered the school's former President, Richard
  23. Berendzen, a $1 million settlement after he pleaded guilty to
  24. making obscene calls to a female day-care worker and resigned
  25. his post. The deal caused such an uproar that a month later it
  26. was rescinded. But Berendzen still gets some $380,000 in
  27. severance pay and works as a full professor in the physics
  28. department (he's an astronomer) at about $70,000 a year.

  30.     All's Fair in Love and Show Biz. Andrew Lloyd Webber brought
  31. Aspects of Love to Broadway in more ways than one. Critics found
  32. the hit musical's score overwrought and the plot unlikely. In
  33. real life, the composer highlighted one of love's least
  34. admirable aspects when he announced a separation from wife Sarah
  35. Brightman and helpfully included the name of his mistress in the
  36. press release.
