  6.     That thud heard last week was the sound of Europe's last
  7. Marxist dictatorship landing on the trash heap of history.
  8. Following three days of student riots in Tirana, Albanian
  9. President Ramiz Alia summoned leaders of the demonstrations to
  10. his palace. Alia then abruptly canceled the Communists' 44-year
  11. monopoly on politics. He announced that henceforth rival
  12. parties will be permitted in the interest of "further
  13. democratization."

  15.     One day later, at a mass rally, a brand-new Democratic Party
  16. was formed. Its program, organizers said, would call for basic
  17. human rights, a mixed-market economy and parliamentary
  18. democracy. The fledgling party will now try to sell that
  19. program to voters unaccustomed to choice, in time for national
  20. elections scheduled for next February.
