  16. <p>     Climate and clothing: Bring warm weather clothing. A light
  17. wrap is useful in July and August.
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     Customs: U.S. citizens do not need a visa to enter the
  20. country for stays of under 3 months. If remaining in Togo for
  21. more than 10 days, an exit visa is required. Innoculation
  22. against yellow fever is required unless the traveler is
  23. arriving from a noninfected area and is staying in Togo less
  24. than 2 weeks. Malaria is a risk. As health requirements change,
  25. please check latest information.

  27. <p>     Currency: The CFA (Communaute Financiere Africaine--African
  28. Financial Community) franc is legal tender, and no ceiling is
  29. imposed on the number of CFA francs which may be brought into
  30. the country. The CFA franc is freely convertible into French
  31. francs. However, for conversion into U.S. dollars, obtain
  32. permission from the government agency handling foreign exchange.
  33. Dollars and travelers checks can be exchanged in Lome.
  34. </p>
  35. <p>     Health: Avoid tap water and unwashed fruits and vegetables.
  36. Local medical services are limited.
  37. </p>
  38. <p>     Telecommunications: Telecommunications improved dramatically
  39. when a new satellite ground station came into service in 1981.
  40. It is possible to directly dial many countries (including the
  41. United States) from Togo, and telecommunications services
  42. continue to be upgraded.
  43. </p>
  44. <p>     Transportation: Air travel is the best way to get to Lome,
  45. which has daily international flights to and from Europe and
  46. major West African cities. Uncertain road conditions or frontier
  47. difficulties can complicate automobile travel to Benin other
  48. than via the direct road from Lome to Cotonou. Accra is an easy
  49. 3-hour drive from Lome, but the border has been closed
  50. occasionally. Lagos is about 5 hours by road, depending on
  51. border crossing formalities. Taxis are available in Lome and
  52. other urban areas.
