- <p> DIED. GARRY MOORE, 78, television personality; on Hilton Head
- Island, South Carolina. Before the late 1940s, there was perhaps
- no time in history in which a man could become famous largely
- on the basis of a slightly bashful, avuncular charm and a bow
- tie. But then television came along and with it a man named
- Thomas Garrison Morfit, better known as Garry Moore, whose understated
- comedy and soothing manner made him an early star of the new
- medium as the host of a variety show that ran in various forms
- and time slots between 1950 and 1967. On that program
- Moore introduced comics Carol Burnett, Alan King and Jonathan
- Winters. In addition to pioneering the TV talk show, Moore
- helped create the game-show form, hosting I've Got a Secret
- and To Tell the Truth with genial authority.
