  15. <p>     DIED. GARRY MOORE, 78, television personality; on Hilton Head
  16. Island, South Carolina. Before the late 1940s, there was perhaps
  17. no time in history in which a man could become famous largely
  18. on the basis of a slightly bashful, avuncular charm and a bow
  19. tie. But then television came along and with it a man named
  20. Thomas Garrison Morfit, better known as Garry Moore, whose understated
  21. comedy and soothing manner made him an early star of the new
  22. medium as the host of a variety show that ran in various forms
  23. and time slots between 1950 and 1967. On that program
  24. Moore introduced comics Carol Burnett, Alan King and Jonathan
  25. Winters. In addition to pioneering the TV talk show, Moore
  26. helped create the game-show form, hosting I've Got a Secret
  27. and To Tell the Truth with genial authority.
